Check Out Our New SumoSac Review
Not your average beanbag chair
by Convergent on 11-18-2008

We reviewed a beanbag chair for SumoLounge.com - Sumo Urban Lounge Gear, about a year ago. It seemed unusual for a PDAPhone site, but then we are about converging parts of our life and this chair is a great way to relax and browse the net on your PDAPhone. About six months ago they sent me a new and improved "SumoSac" to check out and my family has really put it to the test. Check out our review and be sure to check them out if you are looking for an unusual holiday gift. This is one comfy chair.

VITO's Weather 1.2 Released for Windows Mobile PDAPhones
Now includes 100% of USA cities!
by Convergent on 11-16-2008

VITO Technology has released a new version of their free Weather application. Weather 1.2 boasts an updated cities database that includes 100% of USA cities and all major world cities. Its finger-friendly stylish interface makes Weather a good choice among Windows Mobile weather applications. And best of all is that VITO Weather is free.

Weather provides weather forecast for the city you select. Weather stands out among other similar applications with its user-friendly thought out touch-oriented interface. It takes literally three taps to add a city. I've had experience with other weather applications where you had to get out the stylus to add a city because the selection list was tiny in size and huge in length.

Weather displays only... [Read More]
PPCTechs Announces New Cradles for PDAPhones
And some other announcements and promotions
by Convergent on 11-03-2008

PPCTechs has been a partner of PDAPhoneHome almost from the first day we started the site. They continue to develop great products and fully support the PDAPhone market. They are announcing a great new product that will fill a niche left by all the PDAPhone manufacturers and carriers that have stopped including a cradle in the box as they did in the early days. PPCTechs has developed a new cradle that supports dozens of PDAPhone models, with more to follow. If you'd like a more permanent home for your PDAPhone when in the office, this might be just the ticket. Their cradle also includes a slot to charge second battery which avoids having to constantly swap the batteries during the charging process.

Through November 30th, 2008, PPCTechs is offering the PPC Techs Cradle... [Read More]
BlackBerry Storm Coming to Verizon Wireless
First Blackberry with a touchscreen
by NewsGuy on 10-08-2008

Blackberries used to be ugly and boring and only used by corporate executives to get access to the best push email system on the planet. Well times are changing. The Blackberry Storm is one of the sexiest PDAPhones out there and is packed with a lot of bells and whistles that are sure to change the minds of those that still think Blackberries are boring. The question is whether RIM has maintained their leadership in text entry while shifting to the door wedged open by the iPhone.

First off, the big bright touch screen changes the method of navigation. The storm has a 528Mhz processor that should provide plenty of power for the new features. Multi-tasking is also easy as the Storm will let you continue to browse the internet while taking phone calls, or maintain GPS... [Read More]
Skyfire Opens Beta for Their New Mobile Browser
Bring the Desktop Browsing Experience to Your Palm
by NewsGuy on 09-25-2008

Browsing on a Windows Mobile PDAPhone has never been a really fun experience, especially if you are browsing full sized websites. There have been a number of attempts to fix this... unfortunately Microsoft hasn't really made any substantive improvements to their Pocket Internet Explorer in about five years since it first came out, so another new player enters the race by opening a free public beta of their Skyfire Browser for Windows Mobile and Symbian. What does Skyfire offer?

Skyfire aims to deliver a good browsing experience to full-featured PC versions of your favorite websites. Skyfire claims speedy page loads, full audio, images and video. From Myspace, Facebook, YouTube to Hulu - the full web experienced on your phone. That is a big goal and would be great if it... [Read More]
G1 - TMobile and HTC first to Get Google Android Platform Released
How good will the first one be?
by NewsGuy on 09-23-2008

This is probably one of the most anticipated releases in the PDAPhone world in quite a while... maybe even more so than the iPhone. The importance of this product to the market is significant. For those that have been in the PDAPhone world from the beginning... going back to the era of the Samsung i300... the Handspring Treo 270... the T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition... wasn't that long ago but it seems like an eternity. Those devices would pretty much do everything that you can do today, albiet a bit rough around the edges and much slower. Then along comes Steve Jobs and the iPhone and the mainstream media woke up and thought it was a new day in technology. The reality was that it didn't do anything we couldn't do five years ago with these other devices, but it had the Apple polish... [Read More]
Jobs Announces iPhone 3G
Availability Set for July
by NewsGuy on 06-10-2008

Apple's CEO Steve Jobs has personally announced the much anticipated iPhone 3G, the next generation of Apples's wildly successful PDAPhone. As you would expect, the new device now supports the much faster 3G wireless technology. The other big change with the iPhone 3G is the addition of an integrated GPS, something that puts this device on my list of possible devices now. The 8GB version will be black only, while the 16GB model will be available in black or white.

If you recall, the original iPhone met with much consumer angst about Apple's policy for third-party applications. The iPhone 3G will be able to run native third-party applications that have been approved by Apple. Current... [Read More]

Verizon Wireless Joins the Android Party
Will AT&T Follow, or Continue to Hold Out?
by NewsGuy on 12-04-2007

Verizon Wireless has changed course and now decided to embrace the Android platform that gained so much media attention a few weeks back. This comes on the heals of their announcement to "open up" their network to devices that they didn't sell the customer. According to a BusinessWeek report, these moves are motivated by the need to win more and more customers. The wireless industry is going through a major shift right now, as there business model has always been based on everything feeding new subscribers. This model is eventually going to falter when the market becomes fully saturated.

Verizon's store employees used to spend most of their time servicing new customers each day. Now they are spending only 10% of their time on new customers, and that's a lot of... [Read More]
Windows Mobile 6.1 Screenshots and Features Shown
Will the Carriers Push the Features to Current Owners?
by NewsGuy on 12-03-2007

The guys over at BoyGeniusReport received an AT&T Motorola Q9 and found that it was loaded with not only WiFi, but also Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard. They've posted up a bunch of screen shots of it and identified some new features that this version has. Hopefully this will be something that can be pushed down to current device owners, but that kind of thing seems to move at a snails pace (a dead snail, that is).
  • Ability to Cut/Copy and Paste
  • Ability to connect to company resources by enrolling in a domain
  • Redesigned Home screen allows you to pan left and right to see missed calls and more
  • Recent Programs listed on Start menu

Microsoft Office Mobile 6.1 Upgrade Released for Windows Mobile
Current Windows Mobile Users Can Download
by NewsGuy on 11-29-2007

Microsoft Office 2007 introduced new Open XML-based file formats for Office applications. These new file formats reduce file size, improve security and reliability, and enhance integration with external sources. To allow Windows Mobile users to work with Office documents created in the Open XML formats, Microsoft has developed an upgrade for Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile applications. This upgrade to the Office Mobile applications allows viewing and editing of Word documents and Excel workbooks and viewing of PowerPoint slideshows created by using Microsoft Office 2007.

Other improvements include:
• Enhanced viewing experience for charts in Excel Mobile.
• Ability to view SmartArt in PowerPoint Mobile.
• Ability to view... [Read More]
Google Maps 2.0 with My Location Released
Now Find Your Location Without a GPS
by NewsGuy on 11-28-2007

If Google ever adds navigation support to Google Maps, it will likely be the beginning of the end for commercial mapping and navigation software vendors. Its hard to imaging where Google will stop with developing free software, but they just keep going and going. Their model is to generate income from advertising primarily, so its got to be making those in its path a bit nervous. Now Google Maps has taken a leap over those vendors in a new and welcome way.... allowing you to find your location on the map WITHOUT a GPS.

At the reference page you can view a YouTube video that will explain how the new My Location feature of Google Maps 2.0 works. If your device has a GPS, it works like normal and gives you a blue dot on the map where you are. If you don't have a GPS, it... [Read More]
How About a Blockbuster Video Store in Your Pocket?
CEO Aims to Offer Videos for Mobile Devices
by NewsGuy on 11-28-2007

Leading movie rental chain, Blockbuster, confirmed yesterday that it was in talks with mobile phone makers about partnerships aimed to make it easy for consumers to watch movies on the go. Chief Executive James Keyes said, "The challenge is how do I make this convenient for everybody...". Keyes told the Reuters Media Summit he started watching movies on his BlackBerry after some help from a technical expert at Blockbuster and from Jim Balsillie, the co-chief executive of Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd.
"We're talking with virtually all of the major manufacturers about the opportunity to provide greater mobility and convenience," Keyes said. He indicated that they were also in talks with software vendors.

If they could do this for a... [Read More]
Verizon Wireless to Open Its Network for Other Devices
Is This Innovation?
by NewsGuy on 11-28-2007

Verizon Wireless has announced that it will provide customers the option to use wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the Verizon, on their network. While this is good news I suppose, it isn't quite what I expected them to do. Verizon and Sprint have stuck to their "only our stuff" way of doing business for years, and Sprint recently announced that they would let other devices be used on their network, and that they'd unlock their devices if leaving customers wanted to use them elsewhere (i.e., Verizon Wireless). With the increasing penetration of GSM carriers in the US, and the wide array of GSM devices available, you'd think that Verizon would step out a little more.

So why my luke warm reception to this announcement? The first thing... [Read More]
XV6800 Finally Available at Verizon Wireless
Is there anyone still waiting?
by NewsGuy on 11-28-2007

Verizon Wireless announced the XV6800 is available now online and through Verizon Wireless business sales. The XV6800 will be available in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores on Dec. 5. This has been a very long time coming. To put things in perspective, I migrated to the Sprint version of this about 6 months ago, and have since moved onto to another device already. I don't know what the hold up was, but I'm sure from comments in our forums here that Verizon did lose customers over this delay. Well now its finally here, so hopefully there are still a lot of Verizon's loyal customers that are still waiting.

Features of the XV6800 include:
  • 4.3” l x 2.3” w x 0.7” d
  • 5.8 oz.
  • 2.8” 240 x 320... [Read More]
