I'm not totally happy with my GPRS speed. I'm wondering if my GPRS service is performing on par with what it should.... maybe I'm expecting too much for heavier pages. Can you guys time how long it takes to fully paint each of the following pages? Make sure it's not cached by clearing your cache ahead of time. Show times with PIE as your browser. Stop timing when the globe stops.
Then measure your average time of 4 refreshes on www.texan.net/speed/htm<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
One of the unique things of the AT&T SX56 compared to the T-Mobile is its Wireless Tools app. Which is basically a proxy that optimizes throughput by varing the size of images vs quality. I've set mine to maximize speed vs quality (since I don't enable images anyway) and have noticed a speed improvement vs not using the proxy.
I tested my O2 version (64MB) with all lastest software, etc, against my Compaq iPaq3870 + EricssonT39m, and the Compaq was downloading e-mail and webpages 3x faster!
You may note that the limiting factor in the O2 is that it always reverts back to 19.2 kbps when you set up the GPRS connection, which doesn't happen in other PocketPC's!
I don't think the fact that it says it connects at 19.2Kbps means anything. I believe that it negotiates the fastest speed, in spite of what it says. In fact, this is proven out because I am always running well faster than 19.2Kbps when I check my speed.
Can you use the method described to report your speed in both modes? Thanks.
There is a **definite** speed difference - it's like night and day - I have e-mailed O2's Singapore support center, and I also upgraded my O2 to the latest radio version (4.16), and even after that, there is really no comparision.
You might as well just be waiting around for the coffee to brew, rather than reading e-mails and surfing - it's that much of a difference!
In any case, I cannot see any way to change this on the o2, unless there are some options that I haven't tried...I would like some feedback with some others using the same combinations as well...
That's odd... If possible, I'd love to have you do the speed test too. It only takes a few minutes, and it would give us some real data to use for comparison. I've heard others report similar results.
The thing I've notices it that GPRS in my area is patchy, and not necessarily tied to strong/weak GSM signal. Sometimes I've had full bars for strength and crystal clear voice calls. If I try to go on GPRS, very slow. Then I can be in an area with an apparantly weaker signal by the bars, but have really fast and reliable GPRS connection... speedy browsing.
First, the baud rate shown is irrelivant. It will indeed, as stated above, negotiate the fastest speed it can. The fact that it always goes back to 19.2 is a MSFT bug that I have already reported.
You can have great signal and if there are no timeslots available your throughput will be slow. Your speed will vary based on the network load at the time. Voice calls take up timeslots to so if the network is busy you may only get 10Kb/s because you only get 1 timeslot.
Thanks for yet another key piece of info. I'll try to put that into an FAQ.
One update I can report is that after the T-Mobile upgrade, my average speed is now about 47Kbps, which is more comparable with the AT&T times. As you said, you guys came out the door initially with the upgraded firmware thanks to your handy work!
Hey Mike I will post my results when I get my new minutes and Mbs on the 27th, I used mine all up at the hospital when I forgot to bring an image editor to scale the pics...Oh well.
