Question Unknown Word Files on My PPC??

I have a T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition with a few software programs downloaded like PI, Sbp Imageer, Magic Button, etc.

My question is this: Under my Word Documents, I have a few strange folders that don't look familiar to me (with words like "log" or "settings" in them). Definitely not Word docs that I created. My guess is that these were created when I was downloading some software. Do they need to be there or can they be deleted from my Word docs? Do they have some real function?

Hope this isn't a stupid question but I am somewhat new to the Pocket PC world (learning more every day!).

Look forward to your responses!
Cass

Lots of apps do install folders or readme files to My Documents. Try opening one and see what the file contains. If you determine that you don't think you need them just move them to your PC. If nothing acts up you can delete them, but if you have a problem (app no longer works correctly)just move it back.

When I open these, they seem full of codes/gobblygook. Either way, I will take your advice and just click and drag them onto my desktop on my home PC

(is that the best way to do it?)

Thanks for your help!

Clicking and dragging will copy the files, without deleting them from the PPC, since you're working between two devices.

I think schmenge's point was to move the files to your PC (deleting them from the PPC) so that if something broke you'd still have the files to restore back to the PPC. So you can click and drag to copy, but then don't forget to delete them from the PPC.

That's what I meant.....sorry. Should have been more specific

For the most part, are these files usually needed?

Personally any files I have found installed in My Docs have been readme files or other files/folders that made sense. Since you got "gunk" I would guess they were files that could be killed.

Well, good thing I didn't get rid of the files permanently...I removed them from my PPC but saved them on my home PC desktop. Turns out that the first time I synced my device, I lost all the Color Schemes I had saved in Pocket Informant! Since I had no idea which file had those settings saved in it, I just dragged them all back into my PPC and it corrected itself.

Now I am hesitant to remove any documents I am unsure about, which is pretty much all of them!

They are probably pretty small files, so maybe it is best to leave well enough alone. You could also try a Google search on those file names and see what you could learn.

I would never even think that Google would recognize those file names much less be able to tell me what they might be!

I'll give that a shot, thanks!

Probably depends upon how obscure the names are. With my Palm I would find odd names and almost always found on Google what app they were for.

At least 2 of my file names did appear in Google but to be honest, even what came up under Google seemed like gobbledeegook to me (can you tell I am fairly new to the PPC world?)

So, maybe this forum is as good a place as any to figure out what these mean?? Here's what some of them are named:

ABCBar Char (when you open it, it seems to assign numbers to letters)

mdmlog5 (when opened, it says "Modem Command: CLIENT Modem Response: CLIENTSERVER")

Settings (there are a few of these, lot of garbage when opened)

Spb Imageer_tr (this is the name of my picture viewing program) (when opened, says "##English - nothing to localize")

Any ideas???? Hope this wasn't too much info

I don't have any of those, but then I don't have the programs you have and I have an AT&T not T-Mobile. If they are not taking up a lot of storage space, and I would guess they are not, you may as well just leave them alone.

Works for me! Thanks for all the help!

BTW, how do you like your AT&T? Do you have reliable internet access on it?

By and large I am pretty happy with AT&T. I've had themfor years (although with the SX56 it has only been about six months) so I can't compare them to anybody. I've found the GPRS connection to be pretty good, at least as long as I am in a major city or an interstate!

Sounds similar to me. I've been really happy with the T-Mobile for the most part. I have found forums to be extremely helpful since I am fairly new to this world.

Are there any additional ones you would recommend?

AT&T has a forum that is pretty active, but of course it is more geared towards AT&T service. Beyond that this board is the only one that has a lot of focus on the PPC/phone combo. Others like PocketPCThoughts are real active, but not as much on the phone.

If you have not read the FAQ here, make sure you do. Lots of great tips.
