SX66 Running WM5

I have my Cingular SX66 running Windows Mobile 5 now...with sounds...performance is pretty solid...it took a lot of tweaking. Overall, I like it. You do lose the Cingular apps like the GPRS connect which I thought was pretty slick...also I'm unable to send Multi-Media messages now...but I've been able to get most of my WM2003 apps that I "must have" working. I'm pretty happy.

If anyone is interested, I'd be more than happy to post a step by step guide for how I got here.

chadscc,

Can you please post your steps. When I upgraded my unit to WM5 last, only problem I had was the sound and also, the phone applications was extremely slow. Thank you.

Smile As promised

Here's the steps I followed to upgrade to WM5...I have everything working now...please bear in mind this can destroy your device if not done properly. These instructions are mostly the same as XDADeveloper.com...however, I made some CRUCIAL edits and changes to make it easier and less trial and error. Good luck....

How I Upgraded.

You need Windows XP with SP2 or Windows 2000.

Upgrade Instructions:

Backup ALL your USER data, including the files in \Storage, because you will lose EVERYTHING.

1. Install Activesync 4.0 beta, but uninstall any previous versions first.

Download it from Microsoft Activesync 4.0 beta.

Install it and REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER.

Make sure you can connect to your device

You don't Have to or need to set up a partnership

Just pair your device as Guest then click on "Explore" then on "My Windows Mobile Device".

If you can see files and folders there, everything works
2. Download Version 5.1.1700 Build 14343 from http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index..._14343_Upgrade

This is a patched version, it will not cry about digital signatures and work slightly faster.

All patches are be based on this version.

3. Extract all files. You will need WinRAR for this.

4. You will see the following folders.

Downgrade to WM2003SE

PH20B

PH20B1

Preparation

WM5_mamaich_patched

5. If you have not unhid and unlocked your Extended ROM yet

copy xda-developers_Unlocker.cab from the "Preparation\ExtROM unlocker - WM2003SE" folder to your device.

install it by tapping on it in filemanger

then go to start -> Programs -> ExtROM tools -> then first run "unhide", then "Unlock". Do a soft reset.

6. Setup the Storage size to get a full 60MB and not 43 MB

Copy Repart_DOC.exe from the "Preparation\DOC repartitioning tool" folder to your device and launch it.

Set size of Extended ROM to 128 kb (or a bit more, if you want a NOT working extended ROM)

Press "Format now!" and wait until it is done (A few seconds). You will see a message that it is done.

Soft reset.

You MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT get an error message about your storage, just press yes and wait a few seconds.

7. Stop activesync.

Right click on taskbar -> Task Manager.

End the following processes: rapimgr.exe, outlook.exe, winword.exe, wcescomm.exe, wcesmgr.exe

8. Put your device into bootloader mode.

Press Power + record (above the volume slider) + softreset at the same time.

You should see a white screen with "Serial" text on it and the Bootloader version.

Put your device into the cradle

Make sure that the charger of your PDA is connected to the cradle.

The text should change to "USB" now.

9. Copy the files into the correct location.

If you have a PH20B device such as MDAIII, QTEK 9090, XDAIIs, PDA2K etc.

copy nk.nbf from the folder "WM5_mamaich_patched" to PH20B folder.

Run BaUpgradeUt.exe, see next step.

If you have a PH20B1 device such as SX66

copy nk.nbf from the folder "WM5_mamaich_patched" to PH20B1 folder.

Run MaUpgradeUt_noid.exe, see next step.

10. Now you have launched the requred upgrade program,

Press next (it should recognize your device in 10-15 seconds).

You'll see that the new ROM version is 1.40, just ignore that, press next,

The upgrade process should begin in a few moments. It'll take about 10 minutes…it took way less for me…about 4.

11. Hardreset based on Screen Information

When you are done, remove your device from the cradle.

o Press Power + Softreset, and when the colored stripes (well, this is the bootscreen )shows on the screen.

If you have a PH20B device such as MDAIII, QTEK 9090, XDAIIs, PDA2K etc.

Quickly press Record+Camera before the versions appears at bottom right

OR, press Power+Softreset+Camera+Record at the same time.

If you have a PH20B1 device such as SX66

Quickly press Record+Windows Media before the versions appears at bottom right…this has to be done almost INSTANTLY…it’s kind of a pain.

OR, press Power+Softreset+Windows Media Player button+Record at the same time.

Either way mentioned above should work.

o You'll see three options; change the second and the third to "yes".

If you have a PH20B device such as MDAIII, QTEK 9090, XDAIIs, PDA2K etc.

You can do that with the camera and the record buttons.

If you have a PH20B1 device such as SX66

You can do that with the Windows Media Player and the record buttons.

If you are done, press the mail button, it'll show a white screen for a while, just wait.

If the bootscreen, aka. the colored stripes is displayed, Wait more, you are booting.

The welcome screen to set up your device should appear soon.

12. Setup your device

Follow the instructions on the screen

13. Setup Activesync Partnership on your PC.

Put your device into the cradle

Pair and sync your device.

IF AND ONLY IF you have problems with the first sync, Try.

Disconnect your device

go to Start -> settings -> Connections -> Network cards.

Tap on "Remote_NDIS Host", and change to "Use server-assigned IP address" at the IP address tab.

Windows and your PDA may whine about duplicate names and "Cant determine IP address", just press okay.

Also check that you have turned off PC-Cllin Internet security 2005 Firewall (Windows XP firewall seems to work)

Now you should have a working WM5 BA device. However, you will notice that several things are missing from control panel and you can't adjust the brightness yet…oh well...you will fix that in a minute.

15. Test the device

Check the phone

Check your Regional settings

Check the time

Now it is crap slow…here’s how to fix it…

1.) Disable ALL sounds…including the ringer on the phone (set it to vibrate) and keypad tones to none.

2.) Disable error reporting on Control Panel Start -> Settings -> Tab:System -> Error Reporting -> Disable error reporting -> ok

3.) Download the following files from http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...ches_ChangeLog

Backlight and registry fixes

Button Fix

Camera Fix (If your device has a camera)

Sound Fix (If your device has no camera)

Bluetooth fix

Install the patches in the above order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To install:

1) Extra cab file out of your download

2) Copy the patches to your device.

3) Disconnect your device from your PC

4) Execute by tapping on Cab File with File Manager.

5) Install patches to your DEVICE (not storage card).

6) After it installs (do not reset if it asks you to)…turn off your device.

7) Wait AT LEAST 30 seconds!!!!!

Turn your device back on and do a soft reset.

9) Install the next patch.

Follow this methodology to get all patches installed and working properly.

Renable sounds as you like. Bluetooth may or may not work properly.

Enjoy!

So, the sound works right? Does it slow down the OS anymore with the sound on?

I just upgraded and everything seems to be working okay so far. I haven't tried BT or Wifi yet, but will soon. I want to load a couple of softwares first. Thanks Chad for sharing your experience!

I noticed that I can't change the backlight intensity. I can't seem to find any information on it. Is there a way to adjust the backlight?

Thanks Paul. I did run that backlight fix, but I guess I didn't wait long enough before resetting for changes to take place. I ran it again and waited longer and it worked.

I was up and running installing third party software within an hour. There are little quirks here and there installing and uninstalling software. For instance sometimes I noticed that a soft reset doesn't load all the way and it took me like 4 or 5 soft resets for it load correctly.

Overall I like it better than WM2003 because I can turn WiFi on and off at will without a soft reset and same goes for BT. That was so annoying before!

So far I'm running the following software:

Pocket Breeze
Marsware Weather Panel
Pocket Informant
Wisbar Advance
Resco File Explorer
Resco Registry
Skype
SPB Finance
Cingular Xpress Mail
Bejeweld 2

I've been following a thread over at xda forums where someone found a couple of registry settings that fixes the suspend issue. I would post a link, but it seems their forums are down.

I haven't yet tried it myself though.
