Siemens SX66 Updates

Ok, so I've been cooking, and posting links for a bit, which has been getting messy. So yestarday I took stock of all the ROMs and CABs I have gotten and recooked off of XDA-Developers.com, and threw together a couple of HTML pages, and posted it all out on:

http://home.comcast.net/~wyldwiccan

I'll keeping posting new updates here, but it creates a central location for these files. If I've forgotten anything, please let me know, and I'll add it.

-Chris

Chris:

Thank you so much! With your files, I was finally able to update my SX66 properly.

Thanks also for providing those handy add ons. I really like that Bass and Treble control.

Rock on!

Any reason you didn't post the 1.33.51 with WMP 10?

Actually, I believe it is 1.33.51. When I downloaded it orginally, I was labelled 1.33.50. I downloaded the one labeled 1.33.51 a few days ago, and it is exactly the same(Size, Date Stamp, etc..).

Chris,
Thanks for your site, your narrative helps those of us who don't look at these forums every day understand some of the language.

I know that many times it is not clear what a new cab or rom includes or fixes, however, it would be helpful if you could include a bit more info about each update, if available. You mentioned that we should ask ourselves if we really "need" these updates. Right now I don't know if I need any of them cause I don't know what issues they address. Do I need to speak German to install the latest radio update? etc.

I suppose I could do some searching of the forums but if it were all right there, you would gain a spot on my hero list.

Thanks again for your hard work.

Does that include a cape and tights?? Cuz, how cool would that be???

Humanzee, my website was really just a way to organize the ROMs and CABs I've collected. In most cases, I don't know what changes (Other then version numbers) are made, and the would seem that the different people are having different experiences with different files. I really wish there was a central location for information about the changes, especialy in the Radio ROMs, but I'm in the same boat with everyone else of judging this updates by trial and error. The updates I post, unless otherwise noted are for the SX66 version sold in the US by Cingular, so you don't need to know german... But again, how cool would that be?? A German Radio ROM that automatically translated???

As updates are generated by HTC, and collected by Blue Angel users, I will continue to post my evaluations of them here with everyone else. And it is my hope that people updating will do the same. I think the best resource we as Blue Angel owners have is really each other.

Ok, I can't ask for information that nobody has.
On the other hand can you tell me if windows media 10 is worth the update? I use mortplayer for my music, which I really like. WM10 would have to be pretty special to make it worth the effort. I know that many people report different results with different patches. Any comments, on which patches were worth your time?

Ok, but can I still get the tights and cape?

So from the MS website:
"he MP 10 Mobile brings many of the capabilities of the new Portable Media Center (PMC) device to your Pocket PC and Smartphone. For example, you can use it to view TV shows recorded with a Windows Media Center Edition PC and it's easier to transfer video content to your mobile device. In addition, MP 10 Mobile incorporates the latest Digital Rights Management (DRM) security features, which allow you to listen to rented music and view rented videos on your device.

MP 10 Mobile adds support for album cover art (Fig. 1), DirectShow, VGA playback, custom playlists, and a new user interface (UI), all of which bring a more complete multimedia experience to the Windows Mobile user. "

It also always you to sync files and play lists from the Media Player 10 on the desktop. I'd say if you don't have a need for the DRM stuff, then jumping to 1.33.50 is probably a waste of time.

Now for the updates:
Caller ID 1.20 - Pulled from a T-mobile EXT ROM, this version of the Caller ID app not only allows you to associate a picture with the caller ID info, but also a seperate ring tone. You can assign ringtones to groups, or individuals. It also seems to run a little faster then the version included in the SX66 "native" EXT ROM.
Java 1004 - Not sure where this came from, or what the difference is. But I do know the native EXT ROM in the SX66 includes an earlier version, so I just updated for the pure joy of it.
PPC Audio Tools - This one I liked, as with my older iPAQs this was a standard app in the configuration panel. It allows you to adjust the bass and tremble of the audio. This is very useful when listening to music via headphones.

Blue Tooth:

Ok, there are two stacks currently available for the Blue Angel, and decieding on which one is difficult, and most a matter of subjectivity.

Build 3500 - The base of 3500 comes with the 1.33.10 ROM. However some developers at xda-developers felt that certian peices where missing. The 3500-mini update is a sound qaulity update, designed to make headset use better. The Stereo update is speifically for people who use BT Stereo head phones, like those sold by HP. The Stereo update only adds the Stereo HeadPhones to the BT profile list.

Build 3900 - It is my understanding that the 3900 build was downloaded directly from Broadcomm, and adapted for use on the Blue Angel. Is it better? Again, it is subjective. I tend to lead towards the BT 3500 build myself, but each BT build interacts a little differently with the different Radio ROMs. So I always re-evaluate my build when I update the Radio ROM. AudioGW.dll update is a hack. Someone, I believe it was mamiach, but I could be wrong, figured out the orginal audiogw.dll from the BT3500 build works much better with 3900. I recomend this cab if you are using bt 3900.

Wavedev_wlan - This is a combined set of updates. The first is a update that is supposed to improve the audio volume level. I was experiencing a reduction in the volume level if I was using the media player, and recieved a phone call. After the call ended, and I restarted the music, the volume would be very low. Only a soft reset would fix it. This update seems to have solved that problem. The second update is the WLan update that is included in 1.33.110 EXT ROM. For some reason, the person who made this cab combined them. I'm assuming that that person was not running an SX66, so combining the update made sense for them.

Sure (I've posted this before) :

My Ext ROM contains the following:
CAB: \Extended_ROM\CallerID.CAB (V1.20)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\BA_Album_WWE.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Album_Reg.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Enable_GPRS.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\MEdiaNet.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cingulcustomize_041228.CAB
EXEC:\Extended_ROM\AddContacts.exe
CAB: \Extended_ROM\JAVA_WWE.CAB (V1004)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\MMS_WWE.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\SetDefaultSMS.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\MIDI561.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Button.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\WLANPatch.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cingular_ECall.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\version.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust1.CAB (Bass/Treble adjustment app)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust2.CAB (Ext ROM Tools)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust3.CAB (Flash for PIE)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust4.CAB (MS Voice Command)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\BT1.0.0.3900.CAB (BT 3900 Base)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\BA_OEM_AudioGW.CAB (Orginal AudioGW.dll from BT3500)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\wavedev_wlan.CAB (Volume Level Fix)

Note: I’ve removed the getmail.cab, and cin_inbox_ap.cab

I also load the following apps, but because the install usually requires user intervention, I don't include them in my EXT ROM:

Adobe Reader
Black Jack (Bburg Software, Viva Las Vegas Baby!!)
PocketMVP (I like this for movies, plus it is open source!)
PocketPlus (Best Today Screen plug in I've ever used)
PHM Regedit (I know, real men download the registry and use VI, but this is prettyy good.)
vxUtil (Very nice, and free, networking tools)
WiFiGraph 0.22.RC1 (WIFI finder, Version 0.3 doesn't work on the SX66)

I also use a skin for WMP10 called UPod. Makes the WMP10 look like an iPod

These app cabs I store on the \store directory so that it will survive a hardreset, making a reload rather quick.

apps locations

Hello,

I have spb plus, audible player,ms reader and ereader, print pocketce, aim, and I' like to know how to install these next time I do a hard reset in the /store directory so they survive hard reset.

Is it simply installing not on default location or storage card?

How many MB are available there?

Thanks

The \Storage directory on the Blue Angel holds 43.26 MBs. This is inadditon to the memory the BA uses normally. Like have a permenent storage card attached. The idea is to back up data here, because during a hard reset this location stays intact. I however also use it to storage the CAB files for the applications I install, so that I can just reinstall them with I need to Hard Reset.

So, to answer your question, I need to describe how software you double click on on your computer gets installed onto the SX66. You connect to your Blue Angel via Microsoft ActiveSync. When you install software for your BA, it copies the .CAB file into a directory in the c:\programs\microsoft activesync folder. Each application will have have it's owm .CAB file. When you sync up with your computer, the .CAB file is copied down to a temporary directory, and executed. This starts the install on the your phone. So basically, the .CAB file is the installation file for your application. What I do is copy those .CAB files manually from the Activesync directory, to the \storage directory on my phone. This allows me you just click on them in file manager on the phone to start the installation. Make sense?

-Chris

P.S. One last thing. Sometimes there are various .CAB files for some applications. This is because they have written the application for serveral different CPU types. The Blue Angel has an Intel StrongARM processor, and the CAB file will usually contain the word ARM in the name.

storage memory

Makes sense--thank you

What else have you put in this area besides CAB files?

It would make all these upgrades simpler,,just redoing settings and email then would be needed.

I also use the space to make a backup of my contacts, and calendar (Very useful if I need to restore away from my computer). And I keep things like various Themes I like, and pictures and sounds/ring tones that I use. Ive gotten my "restore" from a hard reset done to about 45 minutes to be back at 100% again.

Chris,
Thanks for reposting...it really helped
Couple of questions is the ext rom tools under cust2 just the lock/unlock cab?
What is the flash for PIE....how do I get it?
I thought MS VoiceCommand was exe file (I have it) and not a cab file?
Hope these are not too nube questions

EXT Rom Tools IS the lock/unlock cab
Flash for PIE is Macromedia's Flash plugin for Pocket Internet Explorer
MS VoiceCommand leaves an CAB behind for installation on the SX66.

Thanks!

I just did a hard reset...wanted to start fresh....I went to BT settings and noted that it says build 3500? I installed 3900 in the ext rom with the proper change in the config. Any idea why this might happen?

Chris,

CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust1.CAB (Bass/Treble adjustment app)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust2.CAB (Ext ROM Tools)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust3.CAB (Flash for PIE)
CAB: \Extended_ROM\Cust4.CAB (MS Voice Command)

CAB: \Extended_ROM\dsp_en.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\xda-developers_Unlocker.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\activex.CAB
CAB: \Extended_ROM\1.50.PPC420_StrongARM.CAB

I have tried entering these in config both ways and I can't get any of these four cabs to load. Any help would be appreciated!

Dan

PS I have left off the information parenthesis when imputing to config....is that correct or incorrect?
