I am a Newbe to convergence and I am considering buying a Siemens SX66 from Cingular with a one year service contract for use in North America. I am beginning to travel a great deal in China and in Hong Kong. When abroad, I would like to be able to unlock my SX 66 and insert a SIM card from a local telco. The cost of the Cingular International Service is very expensive for me as I use the phone a great deal to make both local and foreign calls.
I have called several Cingular telephone reps and querried them if the purchase contract for the SX 66 prohibits unlocking the device while in Asia, since the contract is for use in North America. I get answers either that "I don't know," or that "there is nothing in the purchase contract that precludes unlocking the instrument while outside of the USA and in Asia."
In persuit of an unlocked SX 66, I have also seen on EBay that there has been an allegededly new SX 66 sold unlocked. Via a Google search I have also visited several websites (like www.unlocks.co.uk) which sell inexpensive unlocking software for Siemens mobile phones, including the old pocket pc SX56 but I have not found any websites that state that their software can unlock the new SX66.
Is there any way that I can safely unlock a SX66 while in Asia?
maybeyesmaybeno,
I'm using a T-Mobile SIM in a SX66 purchased from a Cingular store. Mine came unlocked from the get go. If you know anyone with a T-Mobile or AT&T SIM, pop it in your SX66 and see if it works.
Your phone is most likely unlocked.
My source tells me that all of the Siemens SX66's that are currently on the market are unlocked. You shouldn't have any problems putting another providers sim in your phone and it working. I've got 12 of those phones here in the last week and everyone of them works fine with another providers sim.
I tried putting my wife's AT&T SIM in my SX66 and when I turned it back on the device hard reset itself. Anyone know what happened? I'm going to Italy in a week and want to buy a prepaid SIM to use while I'm there. Help!

This only happens if the backup battery goes low and you remove the main battery to change SIMS. How long did the main battery stay out? On a 100% charge the backup battery will last only 20 minutes, if you're lucky. Sometimes it would hard reset even in less than 20 minutes.
The main battery was only out for a few mins, definitely less than 5.... Not sure if I had main batt at 100%, but I'm pretty sure backup batt was at 100%....

I checked my backup battery and it was 100%. I removed the battery for about 15 seconds and all was well. When I removed battery and SIM, the device reset itselft. I swap SIMs a lot - does anyone have any insight? Is this normal for this device?
carmelle, this is not good. Generally I'm frustrated by the fact that a backup battery is only good for 20 minutes. But 15 seconds while swapping SIMs is totally uncceptable.
I still have 2 SX66 phones, and I can swap SIMs all day. It only happened to me once, and I could not remember what level the backup battery was at.
For CDMA phones I supposed this short life backup is okay because you don't need to remove the main battery too often....unless you wanna use the spare battery. But for GSM phones, it is more critical to have NVFS so you don't lose your contents each time the damn thing hard rests.
The SX66 is now being sold Sim Locked, I have tired it myself on the units that ship with the newest ROM version are indeed locked, you are required to enter a Network SIM Code to unlock it.

Not true, the phone is LOCKED to Cingular, my SIM chip (T-mobile) does not have a password or SIM code enabled.
When I put in my SIM card and restart the unit, a BOX will come up and you have 4 attempts to enter the unlock code, but if you put in a Cingular SIM it will work fine.
I purchased mine two days ago (3/20). When I inserted my SIM from T-mobile, it asked PIN for SIM..The PIN is 1234 on T-mobile phones unless the user has changed it.
The message I get when I insert T-Mobile SIM is Invaid Network. Enter Code to Unlock'. Does anybody knows anything about it?
As stated above Cingular is now shipping the SX66 Locked, with the latest Firmware installed, they seem to be doing this with most of the phones that were released during the transition period (the merger with AT&T)
I have an older AT&T Sim that will not work as well, you must use the newer Cingular 64K SIM or 32K SIM.
You can find a place on the Net that will unlock the phone for $38US(they require you to run some software on your machine and you have to than send them the ouput file) or if you are a current Cingular Customer for 90 days, you can request an unlock code.

Cingular does not provide unlock codes, period. I was a custmer for over a year and requested an unlock code because I needed to take my phone overseas; the answer was no. So I told Crapular to shove it, paid ETF and got T-Mobile.
If you call them they will say no, you have to send an email to simunlock@cingular.com with the following info:
Your Name, Account #, Cell Phone #, SS#, Phone Name and Model, and IMEI #
They will only unlock a phone that was purchased from Cingular (Cingular Branded Phone) and you must have an account in good standing and 90+ days active.
