imate jasjar for US usage

I am new to the fully convergent use of my device. I purchased a I600 a couple years ago when it first released with the intention of using it for my corporate mail. Well policies etc got in the way and the good client at the time not having a smartphone version did not give me a workable solution.

I am currently using a corporate I730 with goodlink and am fairly pleased with it. I find the text messenging to be tedious and also have recently done SD's wireless fix and it seems to be doing ok.

After that what I am really asking is that I would really like to try a jasjar device. Can this device be used on Verizons network and will it be capable of doing EVDO etc? Also if it does work because it is not an approved device will it be flaky and can I expect any support whatsoever from verizon for connectivity issues?

it appears to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $750.00, is that pretty standard?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I've got my JasJar talking to my Verizon i730 as a modem so I am getting EVDO speeds on the net but the JasJar itself does not support CDMA I don't think you can get the total Verizon package. I'll do a speed test later this week and see if I'm really getting the EVDO speeds or not. Sure feels like it but I haven't really tested it.

Using this Device in the USA

The HTC Universal (MDA Pro, i-mate JasJar, Qtek 9000, etc.) is a GSM/GPRS/UMTS device and will not operate on the CDMA/EV-DO networks of Verizon or Sprint. Moreover, its use on the GSM/GPRS/UMTS networks in the USA is restricted.

If you want to use the Universal in the USA, you will only be able to access the 1900-MHz GSM/GPRS-networks of T-Mobile and Cingular here, since the Universal doesn't support the 850-MHz bandwidth, which Cingular also uses in various parts of the country. In addition, you won't be able to access the 3G (300-400 Kbps) UMTS-networks Cingular is operating and expanding here, since the 2100-MHz bandwidth, required by the Universal for UMTS, is used for satellite transmissions in the USA.

With a SIM-card from T-Mobile USA or Cingular in the Universal, it will function as a GSM/GPRS device in Europe or Asia, but you can't access the 2100-MHz UMTS-networks that exist there, since neither T-Mobile USA nor Cingular has international UMTS-roaming agreements at this time. You would need to somehow get hold of a European or Asian SIM-card authorized for UMTS service to enjoy 3G-speeds in Europe or Asia.

Finally, you won't be able to access the EDGE-networks ("2.5G", 70-140 Kbps) anywhere in the world, since the Universal is not EDGE-capable, which means you will be restricted to GPRS-speeds (20-40 Kbps) everwhere with regard to wireless data-transfer, unless you can find a HotSpot somewhere that you are authorized to use.

The Universal is - no doubt - a significant technological achievement, but it was designed for use in Europe and Asia, not in the USA!

P.S. IF I lived in Germany, I would have bought the German version (the MDA Pro) from T-Mobile of Germany the day it was released (September 1, 2005). They're selling it for about $600 on a two-year contract. Only $600 for this device, AND you get 3G-performance? That's a deal that makes sense!

Jasjar v. Wizard

I'm going to be in the UAE half time starting next year. The Jasjar will work in the UAE at 3g speeds, but will crawl in the US. The Wizard will work ok in the US, but will crawl in the UAE. Ugh.

Thanks for your information on 3G in the UAE. If you have (or can get) a SIM-card authorized for UMTS-service from a wireless provider in the UAE, at least you could fully utilize the JasJar for half the year.

I guess what we need to cover all the bases is a 4-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE device (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) (like the Wizard) combined with 3-band UMTS-capability (850/1900/2100 MHz) (like no PDA/phone out there yet), along with international roaming agreements for all these modes. Well, maybe someday . . .

I would use a UAE subscription for this service. Data roaming is a pricey option. I'd rather SIM swap.

I have a corporate sponsor so I do not need to worry about passing a credit check. I also own a USIM from Orange in the UK, but as I said 3g roaming is a lousy deal.

Well it turns out I was not getting EVDO Speeds with the bluetooth modem program tehering the SCH i730 to the JasJar. I tried surfing to the same sites with the SCH i730 alone then the JasJar tethered to the SCH i730 and the Verizon PPC Phone was always faster.

I'm assuming that you mean an MDA Pro, since "JasJars" from i-mate are normally unlocked.

T-Mobile of Germany sells unlock codes for their MDA Pro's for about 100 €, or you can wait for your 2-year contract with them to expire, then get the unlock code for free.

But are you talking here about a device from Vodafone of Italy? If so, I would start with them first.

Good Luck!

Dave does the MDA Pro support Blackberry emulation like the MDA III?

This is the best information I could find:

I beg to differ, but I used my T-Mobile USA SIM card in a JasJar in Germany and the UK in October and I got UMTS coverage in both places. Furthermore, I have just the $30.00 unlimited internet plan but I got the .99/min voice rate as well as unlimited (and fast!) data just fine over there. Not a bad deal for international roaming. I did have to call T-Mobile USA from Germany to fix a problem with the international roaming at first (I had called earlier from the US to activate international roaming), but once that was fixed, it was a beauty.

Congratulations on getting into T-Mobile's UMTS network in both the UK and Germany with a SIM-card from T-Mobile of the USA. Both T-Mobile of the USA and Cingular state flatly that they have no international UMTS roaming agreements, so that you would need a UMTS-enabled "foreign" SIM-card to log into UMTS-networks abroad. I'd be interested to hear if T-Mobile USA charges you the standard GPRS-rates for the data you downloaded or uploaded while abroad ($0.015 per KB), or if you were somehow "invisible," so that they never charge you anything at all.

Strangely enough, in Germany (Berlin), I was roaming on E-plus (not T-Mobile!?), and my JasJar displayed the 'U' icon on the top. It would occasionally switch to GPRS depending on where I was in town. I was actually more surprised to see it in London. I also don't appear to have been charged for data. My bill details VPN access on the dates I was there, but there's no data charge. Weird. I payed through the nose for text messages tho (.37 a piece).

It only supports the 1900MHz US frequency, which is fine if you're with T-Mobile USA, but not always with Cingular depending on where you are. As far as I know there are no plans for any US carrier to take on the Universal. I personally have an unlocked iMate JasJar.

mentalbob,
Where in the US do you use it?
Is the T-mobile coverage good?
How about GPS and any other functions?
How well does it compare to the i730?
Sorry for all the questions, but from what I've seen, I realy want to use this if it is possible.
Tahnks
Joe

Don't Panic, you mentioned that you are using the sch i730 as a modem for the mda pro. I have been trying the same with no luck. Any help you could provide would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
