Newbie of Samsung i730 (and PDA's in general)

Hello,

I was going to skip this introduction part (not sure why everyone wants to hear another newbie is on board), but I read somewhere it is part of what is expected as part of the community.

I've been using computers since 1978 - back when you needed to program in Cobol. I remember the days when turning on a PC got you this:

then this:

Learned a little Basic, could edit and create .bat files. In the early '80's switched to Macintosh at home and continued in the PC world because of work (not in IT). Did a lot of mentoring of older folks at work. Watched one turn into more of a PC expert than I was. Went through the switch to Windows at work & helped lots of people through this. (So I know what it's like to do a lot of hand holding, over and over again.) Stayed with Mac thru OS 8.x. Did Windows '95, '98, 2000, now on XP.

New to the world of PDAs (other than basic ones that you can buy at the drug store). Covetted Palms, but never owned one.

Bought a Samsung i730 over a month ago (with pocket pc 2003 se) and have been lurking on this site since before I bought the phone - while I considered which VZW phone to buy.

Just read some other newbie's post that he just bought his for $200 less because they are being closed out! If only my cell phone had conked out 2 months later!

I've been reading the official stuff. VZW pretty worthless. Samsung manual fairly helpful, but missing a lot of crucial information.

Been lurking and reading the FAQ's and various posts. Felt compelled to join today when in the process of trying to deal with the daylight savings time changes I ended up having to hard reset. (Please read my post there if you can help) Please.

I understand the issue about newbies wanting their questions answered directly and the techies (is that ok?) getting tired of seeing the same questions over and over again.

But reading the posts on the forums for a newbie is a convoluted process. As one of you techies (long standing members of the community) mentioned, you need a glossary of terminology and of acronyms. That's ok with me, when I'm reading these on the PC. I don't mind opening up another window and getting the info I need, going back & trying to figure out what it's all about. Most of the time, I find out that the forum discussion is not relevant (like I just did with one on tethering, by finding a great def elsewhere).

This is harder to do on the i730 because there is only one PIE window allowed. (Is this something that can be overcome?).

But it's frustrating because finding answers requires a long, long learning curve for every single thing, even things that I discover are not and probably never will be useful for me, or might be useful sometime--so I'll try to store it away for recall in the future (or save it to a Word file or save a link in favorites).

I do appreciate greatly all of the work that members of this community have put into this forum and continue to put in to share their knowledge with others. I have already benefited from some of it. Many thanks!
