Why does this website try to shove an "Avenue A" tracking cookie (spyware) on me at every single page load? I can understand your desire for revenue to subsidize the site, but this is inappropriate.

A cookie is not spyware. Cookies are used by all banner advertisers and are rather innocuous. I'm pretty paranoid about security, but this really it not something to worry about.

The site has a policy specifically to NOT allow any advertising that does pop-ups or associates with any kind of spyware (or is even visually annoying for that matter). The vBulletin discussion group system allows a user to store a cookie to keep track of where you are in the discussion threads. Because the entire system, and it's user management, uses vBulletin, the only cookie that should be loaded is that one. You can opt out of using that cookie if you like by going into the User CP and unselecting "Browse using a cookie" and "Automatically log in" in the User Options. If you do this, you will have to keep logging into the system each time you come back. If you read our Privacy Policy, you will see that your personal information is not sold and is only used for tracking your session here. We also will occaisionally do a mailing to tell you about site changes, which you can also opt out of.

If you are seeing any other "spyware" activity, please report it in the Site Problems and Suggestions forum so that we can determine where it is coming from and remove it. Because some of our ad space is managed by an outside organization, occaisionally something will slip through that viloates our policy. If it is reported, we will have it removed as quickly as possible.
