i500 Replacement

For those that are more familiar with the Treo product line, would this version be the one that would be the best to replace the Samsung i500?

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

well, sure, in the sense that it is the latest PalmOS CDMA Treo, not that it is *all* that different than the 700p, but all things being equal, sure, the 755p is the "best" PalmOS CDMA phone right now ... (lets hope that Palm finally figures out how to build something other than a "Treo", before its time runs out...).

Just to expand a bit... there is as of yet no true i500 successor. If PalmOS is what is important to you, then there is only the Treos. If a compact flipphone is what is important to you and you can deal with WM/Smartphone software, (and switching from Sprint), then there are the Cingular 3125 (GSM, when unlocked, can be used on Tmobile), and the Verizon/Pantech PN-820. Then there are the several Q-like slim Smartphones (Q, Dash, Blackjack). And then... there is waiting, waiting for a real i500 successor...

If you're going to give up the i5, the 755p wouldn't be a bad way to go. Us 700p beta testers paved the way for you so you'd have a relatively bug free 755p with a few improvements and better radio to boot. If you don't mind the form factor you'll be a happy camper. And you probably won't miss graffiti after a couple weeks.

On the other hand, the promise of the linux treo due out at year's end might make it worth the wait. You've held out this long. If you get the 755p now, you're stuck for two years with it, and you might end up with a severe case of linux envy.

Now if Palm would be smart and let people license that new linux OS so other companies would come up with some competition and new designs.

Good points... I don't know that Palm got all the bugs out as you were suggesting... bit the 755P isn't a bad little PDAPhone. I'm still on the fence of whether I want to stick with Palm or not... I do wish there were a real i500 follow-on.

I would love an i500 replacement as well.

I was on the fence for ever about switching from my i500.
I love clamshell form factor vs the Candy Bar

However, I finally made the transition and I can say I am ok with it. I was VERY concerned about the size as I 'pocket' my phone. not a fan of the 'Batman' Utility belt look.
I have gotten quite used to it without any problem.
I got my 700p just a bit to early as 2 month later they released the 755p(without the external anntennae) My wife has one of those and I covet it.

I get a kick out of the iPhone hype as my fone could do all of that....(ok so the GUI is nowhere near the same...but it aint $600 and on AT&T either)

I love the Palm platform as there is a wealth of 3rd party apps that could do just about whatever you'd need.

The ONLY complaint I have is that the i500 had native voice dialing/recognition built into the phone (no screwy plan from Sprint)
The Treo's do not. Not natively anyway, again the 3rd party app community has a solution or two but I haven't yet tried them.

I hate technology that moves forward and yet loses ground.
Long live those who cherish their i500. That piece of technology ranks up there with my Replay TV boxes as technology that held its own way longer then the competition. i500 held their resale for value long after other fones were headed for the schools 'recycle your cel-phone' fundraing programs.

A shame that Samsung wasn't able to get the i550 out to market

Hey, I just got my 755 to replace i500 of many years.

I miss the voice dialing - am currently battling sprint for it - its says voice dial on the box, therefore you shouldnt have to pay more for it.

That aside, its a HUGE step up. Its bigger & heavier no doubt, but its also faster, has a way bigger screen, a keyboard & so much better data speed. Not having the external antenna makes a good difference on the size thing & if you were like me with the i500 always packing the big battery the width is slightly better!

Activesync along is worth it if you want blackberry like service with palm's convenience. Oh, and finally getting your own ring-tones! Ahh, welcome to the 21st century.

Too funny. I also am in the same boat. I'm tired of waiting for a true successor to the i500, and finally after a chat with a product manager at Palm who told me I better not hold my breath waiting for another clamshell Palm-OS smartphone, I'm going to replace my i500 with the 755p. I just placed the order tonight, so I guess I've got 30 days to chunk it back at Sprint if it doesn't fit the bill.

I'm not giving up Graffiti, though. I'll use the Graffiti Anywhere application like I've been doing on the i500 for years now and use that for input mainly. I don't think I'm going to like the tiny little keyboard. Who knows, though? I'll certainly try it and if it works, I may switch.

The new announcement from Palm about the Centro certainly looks interesting. Yes the keyboard is small but the screen may be around the size of the I500's with higher resolution. Probably won't be a full-featured as a Treo but will probably have all of what the I500 has except maybe the voice dialing. And at an expected $99 for a a Palm phone you can probably put in your pocket comfortably...I will wait for its roll out before deciding on which phone will replace my I500 (which is only held together through "hill billy" engineering).

The Centro/Treo 690 does indeed look promising, but knowing Palm I'm sure they'll find a way to screw it up in an attempt to keep it under $300...

I just retired my i500 for the 755p last week. All I can say is good riddance. Not to sound insincere or anything... I loved the i500, that thing has come a long way. But eventually a time came when I got sick of the thing. The case was falling apart, my slim battery went through the dryer, the fat battery kept popping out, and it was constantly crashing or requiring hard resets. Considering how much I've abused the thing, 3 years was a long run. But I have no regrets getting the 755p. I was worried about the form factor, because I've always preferred flip phones... but as soon as I got the thing in my hand, the i500 was nonexistent to me. Among countless other features, these are the main ones that really make the treo a step up from the i500..

bluetooth
keyboard
bigger, better def screen
media player
CAMERA
RINGTONES
SMS TEXTING!!!!!! (without third party app)

Thanks for the comments. I'm a hesitant i500 user too, but my phone is just old. Battery clip broke and now the stylus is sliding out. I used to carry a PalmPilot Pro in my pocket, and then an i300--an argument both for and against making the switch: I've carried around bulky devices before with no problem, but it'll feel like going backward.

A couple questions for you defectors:

1. I have insurance. Did anyone manage to upgrade to 750 by paying extra on the insurance or something?

2. When you folks moved from the i500 to the 750, how did you sync over your data? Did you use the tips in the 650 forum?
