Computerworld claims Treo 755P is the LAST device with Palm OS

I'm not sure if this is writer speculation or fact.. but this Computerworld writer is claiming that the Treo 755P will be the last device released from Palm with the Palm OS, being abandoned in favor of Linux. That would seem kind of bizarre to me since there are so many Palm devices out there and so many Palm apps available, but I suppose it is possible.

The new Linux-based PalmOS that Palm is developing is suppose to be compatible with all current PalmOS apps. I think the 755p is the last of the Palm/GarnetOS 5.4.X Treos but it certainly will not be the last device that Palm releases capable of running current PalmOS programs. Palm has a license to the GarnetOS source code and now that they have made their intentions known about the development of their own Linux-based OS, it seems obvious the reason was so that they could ensure compatibility with current PalmOS programs in this new OS. Palm/GarnetOS 5.4.X is obviously a very outdated OS that limits a smartphone's capabilities. Seems the best move is for Palm to move away from that OS as quickly as possible to an OS that supports multitasking while still maintaining compatibility with the the thousands of PalmOS apps out there, which is what their new Linux-based OS is suppose to do.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Marty... I was thinking they had slipped a cog. I agree with the fact that the Palm OS is a little weak at converged functions, but its simplicity makes it great for many users. I can't help but think that a Linux base would add complexity to things, but I guess that comes with the territory. I know that since flipping over to Palm a couple days ago... I love the form factor... but miss the multitasking.

CLearly that was speculation. As of July 2008, the Palm centro has been released in both GSM and CDMA versions and both still run the Palm OS 5.X. Even the one just released for Verizon. Therefore the 755p was not the last Palm OS device. If there will be a last one it may be the centro.

However, it is pretty clear that the 755 is the last Treo-branded device that will have the traditional Palm OS. It appears there may a 3 tier strategy with the Centro line being Palm OS, Treo having WinMobile and something in between having the Linux.
