Well, I will ask you this question as I ask ANYONE that I build a computer for. "How will you be using your device?"
If you can answer that question some of your chopices will become more clear.
As for me, I came from a 6700 to the 700wx. I switched because of the issues that I was having wiht the 6700 that I could no longer deal with. (But that is a different story.) With that said, I bought a BT GPS receiver from Seidio which came with iGuidance GPS software. Which at the time was the software of choice for the 6700.
With my experience, I am glad that I went with the BT GPS reciever for a couple of reasons;
1) I could use the receiver on my laptop.
2) I could install the iGuidance software on the SD card without losing access to the other files on the card.
I have been pretty happy with the set up. As for the charging "drawback" you mention (ref. laptop), well no matter what you do you will have to charge your 700wx anyway so I don't see the difference. And if you have an external BT receiver, well you are going to have to charge that too. So I don't really see the issue here. But maybe that is just me.
As for software, like I mentioned above I am using iGuidance which was the software of choice on the 6700. But I have also had my eye on TomTom. Either one, everybody has their likes and dislikes about each. Since I have never used TomTom, maybe someone could speak up on their experience with it on the 700wx.
Good luck
