Solution to Activesync Problem on Treo 700w

This was posted by thedumbkid and confirmed by psychdoc as a solution provided by Palm tech support here:

http://discussion.treocentral.com/tcforum/showthread.php?t=111766

In short, delete all zero length files in \Windows\Temp

Since I only found zero length files in that directory on my device I added this as a temporary folder to be cleared out automatically using

Space Reclaimer

It works great.

Incidentally, I noticed that many of these files are created all during the day. I suspect it has something to do with using a push email client. This might be why some of us experience this problem and not others.

I made it a sticky, since this is a great tip for new users. Worked great for me... even if I am giving up my Treo 700W after these months.

That worked and added to space reclaimer.

This only fixes one of the Activesync problems. The following may help others.

About three weeks ago Activesync 4.1 stopped working. Would get to connecting and just sit there. My Samsung i730 had no problems on the same computer. (I get all the new devices as I do testing for our company)

I worked with Palm for two hours on April 27th (best support I have had in years, Thanks Wayne). Found that the Cisco VPN client on my laptop (version 4.8.00.0440) caused the problem. Seems that in WM5 activesync is using TCP/IP over the USB cable to communicate and that the Cisco VPN software is apparently blocking some ports. We tried a lot of things before we found the solution. One of his colleagues had identified 3 Cisco problems earlier in that same day. Is now one of the first questions they ask.

The Treo update from Verizon will allow you to switch from IP sync to Serial which may fix the problem. It was not available on the 28th. Will try it in a week or two. Otherwise infrared sync works and supposedly bluetooth will also but haven't tried that yet. Will be picking up a bluetooth adapter this afternoon.

Funny thing is that initially I did not have this problem. Worked fine for the first two months. Only thing I can surmise is that a Windows Critical Update changed something.

My problems were completely different than those above - I was NEVER able to get the 700w to finish connecting to my PC. Several of us suppose that was due to Cisco and/or Nortel VPN clients on my PC, which I could not remove.

Tonight, in a random hope that something would have changed, I found ActiveSync 4.2 BETA from MS. I installed it (since nothing worked anyway, couldn't hurt) and voila!! It connects without a problem to my Treo. I then ran the updater and installed software, and now it almost works like a PDA should. Just for those who may be in the same boat... Thanks...

Thanks for all the tips... My Windows/Temp folder has 5000+ files and is taking HOURS to delete. Space reclaimer for some reason didn't delete all the files?

ThePerfectK - where did you find the ActiveSync 4.2 BETA? I couldn't find it on the MS site.

Thanks for all the help!

Another update - After installing that ActiveSync 4.2 Beta, everything works great. I kept both the Cisco and Nortel VPN clients installed, and they both work. I re-installed ZoneAlarm Free, and it works fine. I installed PDANet from JuneFabrics.com, and it works great. I am just thrillied... yessir...

This is where AS 4.2 Beta is posted:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...ivesync42.mspx

or if that doesn't work for any reason, here's my google search:
activesync 4.2 beta site:microsoft.com

One of those should get you there. Good luck

Trouble windows to recognize attached Treo 700w?

Separate Treo 700W connection issue, has anyone else found trouble getting windows/activesinc to recognize the attached Treo? Just plugging into the USB and having my Treo on rarely works, I often have to restart both my computer and Treo several times before the connection takes...any thoughts someone could help with?

Regards,
Xail

I'm not sure what would cause an intermittent connectivity problem like that. Mine would either work or not before, and after I installed AS 4.2 beta, I just plug my phone in and bam! there it is. No problems for me, so I'm not sure what to offer to help...

I am removing some of the sticky threads and adding links into the FAQ Thread to clean things up a bit.

In regards to the Cisco VPN and Activesync issue, I had the same problem. All I needed to do is go in and turn the VPN firewall off in the Cisco client and Activesync works. Just open the client>options>Stateful Firewall off
