Lockups

I'm on day 5 with my new 700w and it's doing something now that is very disturbing... it locks up frequently while on standby. I'll soft reset the phone, use it, hit the hangup button to turn off the screen and 15 mins later try it again and it will not be responsive. The light keeps blinking, but nobody is home.

Also, text messages only seem to come in (and I'm only alerted to them) when the phone is not on standby (the screen is on). Is there a way to get past this.

Basically it's now useless to me.

Any ideas?

I'll assume you have no 3rd party software conflicts. This sounds like what happened to me when I had Wisbar on.

If not, you might need a replacement.

This is the first PPC converged device that I've ever had where I've gone DAYS without a lockup.

Right now, I'm not using any "iffy" software on my device, like Spb beta, Wisbar, etc. I'm not using any Today screen plugins and if I do, they will be installed in main memory. Most of the reason these guys lock up are the Today screen apps trying to access a slower SD card. I'm trying to use software ONLY updated for WM5. You can expect possible buggy behavior from anything else.

I agree with EvilHomer... this 700W seems to go days without needing a soft reset. I have a few Today screen plugins and it doesn't affect performance much at all.

I've installed a today plug-in and have removed it without any effect. I'll try removing some other apps to see if the behavior changes.

I've un-installed a today plug-in and the MS remote desktop app and so far it has been behaving. The consistent problem has been it locking up first thing in the morning (first use after I wake up) so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to know if this is truly fixed. Thanks for the tips, y'all.

Still having periodic lockups... I'll just keep removing software 1-by-1 until it's stable and if I still have problems then I'm giong to return the unit and get a new one. This is very strange though.

Have you applied the fix to stop activesync from starting by itself? If you haven't done this yet then this fix will probably be the cure for your 700w.

The fix is here:

By all means you should do the fix in the link given. Go to that link and it will explain all the details about what is happening with the Active Sync. Mine was doing the same thing and this procedure fixed it.

Early this month, I upgraded to the Treo 700w from the venerable (and vulnerable) Kyocera 7135, a palm based smartphone. Among the reasons I upgraded was the stable memory of the 700w and the reputation for reliability of other Treos, particularly the 650 which I regard as the 700w's close cousin.

After just two weeks, I find myself using the reset button on the back of the 700w far more often than in three years using the notoriously unstable 7135. I seem to get the 'black screen of death' far too often on this phone considering that the only applications on it are the original ones provided by Verizon.

It is not heartening to see that Seido offers an aftermarket battery cober with a hole prepunched for the reset button. My next step is to do a hard reset on this phone...I will try the fix above too. At least I am not the only one.

crazyphil, once again you have come through. I've made that config change and so far it hasn't locked up on me. Only time will tell. If that doesn't work, I'm going to uninstall everything and if that fails, exchange the unit.

Thanks Crazyphil! I have now gone almost 24 hours since my last lockup, which is about 20 hours longer than before...

I'm glad the fix seems to be working for your devices and I hope that is the end of that. For some reason I didn't have those problems before applying the fix to my 700w, I had just noticed that Activesync kept loading into the "Running Programs List" window after I had just stopped it. Ever since I applied that fix Activesync never loads unless I manually start it.

That's what I noticed too... ActiveSync was running even after I was no longer connected to my PC and I've killed the task. That is no longer the problem! I am still having periodic lockups, but they are not near as frequent as before. I'll let you know if it's brain dead in the morning as that is usually when I have to smack it upside the head.

mine has done this a couple of times in the past two weeks of owning it. then today it has done it 3 times!! each time I have to do a soft-reset.

for the record, I don't have ANY programs installed on my unit and I have Activesync configured for Exchange AUTD.

I also have Keyguard enabled... maybe we should take a poll to see how many who are having this problem are also using keyguard.

If you are having lockups on a device in which no software is installed, I would suggest returning for a new unit. I have several programs on mine and have had no lockup unless they were the result of me installing incompatible software. This should have been called the 700"s" for Stability.

Oh, and keyguard works perfectly, especially considering the problems on the 6700. One thing I've noticed about the keyguard is that sometimes, you have to be patient when pushing the red power button. It doesnt' always jump right on. I've noticed if I continue pushing it impatiently, it can lockup.

Are you running Wireless Sync Push or ReadySync? WS has serious memory leak problems (as does most push email programs).

Also, there is the "Axim" fix to keep Activesync from starting up. That might help. I don't have the link to that fix but maybe someone else has it handy.

I am not running WS.. just activesync. it is configured to push/pull from my Exchange server. again, the device worked fine for almost two weeks without any lockups. this just started about 5 days ago.

I just got off the phone with Verizon Data Support and they had me hard reset the device and reload my data. if problem persists they say it will need to be replaced with a refurb unit??? should I make them give me a new one since it's under 30 days?
