Palm Pre

Ok, folks, what do you think?

Where is the forum for the Palm Pre?

I think I will be getting one of these to replace my aging Sprint 700p.

I'll have to wait until Verizon gets it (please, please, please).

The more I read about it the more I like it.

Looks terrific - just got a 755p in September that replaced my 4 year old i500 - and I've hoped for a way to avoid Windows Mobile. And I'm on Sprint (which for once gets a cheer).

How do we get a separate forum section for the Pre - ?

I am assuming that an admin will be taking care of this shortly.

There will be different models of Pre's, including a slide-out keyboard type like the HTC Touch Pro as will as other shapes and sizes (according to CES anyway).

Looks pretty sweet, hoping VW picks it up within the next year just in time for my current contract to expire. I love my 700p but am so glad to see a new Palm smartphone finally come out! Yeah Palm!

I was about to pull the trigger on the HTC Touch Pro - (new-ish adopted doggie has chewed my aging 650 to a point of no return....) I also have been dreading the switch to WinMo, tho' I don't really know why.

I like the thought of a slightly different form factor-hope that is the case. For some reason the released 'slider' is looking weird to me.

I too am a VZ customer, and their coverage has me nearly enslaved; however, I am increasingly aggravated (to say the very least) at their sneaky attempts to change my plan. Additionally, I detest the thought of a VZ crippled Palm Pre! (Which has also been holding me back from the HTC TP....I keep gazing at the greener grass of the Sprint version )

I can totally relate. Whenever I upgrade something or change anything, I ask (about a dozen times) will this change my plan? I don't want to change my plan!

According to most of the sources I've read, the Pre kept the verticle keyboard similar to its other phones for several reasons, so I would not expect to see a horizontal slider, at least for the Pre. However, WebOS was specifically mentioned as the new system all future Palm phones would be designed to. When is not clear, but since the Centro 2 is slated to release at nearly the same time I doubt that will be the next one we see it on. So while the Pre may not be released witha horizontal keyboard, there is nothing saying that Palm's next new phone will have WebOS and a horizontal slider. Just keep in mind that the Pre was made as the iPhone Killer, and it is the iPhone and T-Mobile G1 that are the target competition for this phone.

According to almost every source (maybe you find one I havent seen), the Pre is slated as a Sprint CDMA phone for the US, just like the iPhone is a AT&T phone only in the US. Now there is one report that a GSM/UMTS version will be anounced for the European market at MWC, which might lead some people to get excited about using the Pre unlocked on AT&T or T-Mobile, but...I have a sneaking susicpicion that the Pre will be using its rather tightly integrated GPS to help ensure its US Sprint exclusivity.

I am not saying that you are wrong, but I hope that this isn't the case.

I haven't read that the Pre will be with Sprint "exclusively." When the iPhone was released, they were VERY specific about it being "exclusively" with AT&T.

I am still hopeful. However, I will not switch to Sprint if the Pre is not released on Verizon.

Yeah, well, this is all well and good, but the question now is, will Apple sue it off the market before it launches? Apple's acting-CEO Tim Cook and his millions of bux and minions of lawers are smelling the air for fresh blood on this one big time. And as Palm is currently staffed with ex-Apple zuits and engineers, I fear we have a stalking male Polar Bear canabalizing it's own offspring in the months to come.

Actually, there was a few statements from Apple saying very clearly that they will protect their IP rights (differnt wording of course). It isnt the first time Apple has sued to keep its lead, and many times they have lost. They sued Microsoft over Windows, lost. Sued when a competitor introduced a music player using similar technilogies. They lost that too. In fact its because of the tightly bound iTunes/iPod connection that allowed services like Rhapsody and the 'Napster', and its Amazon and Yahoo counterparts, to exist and thrive. Got Microsoft into the game with Zune...clearly Apple's legal machine failed to stop progress.

There are several software apps that have 'similar' features, look, and feel to what iPhone has. The Pre is simply taking the next step. iPhone raised the bar a lot, and the Pre simply made the jump.

Now I agree with you completely that Apple will attempt legal action, because that is just what Apple likes to do. I suspect that act could slow down the release, or pause the further sale after an initial release, but like always the only thing Apple will be doing is slowing down the inevitable.

But if you think about it, considdering the people hired and where they came from previously...if this were a PvP game I'd be expecting a trap right about now; almost as if Palm is baiting Apple. With the UI being essentially web/browser based, it is possible that what we've seen is simply 1 possible template/theme/view people can choose from and the current default. That means it isnt much differnt than the other UIs floating around out there that look like iPhone because people started using it. But Palm gets sued, so Apple must be worried about the Pre...stirs the pot and attracts more attention.

Also, there was a report that a group has almost ported Android to work with the chipset the Pre is using...and from what I hear that same group is trying to set up dual boot so the Pre could go both ways.

Keep in mind that Apple may be getting ready to spend some legal funds as investors demanding to know more details on Steve Jobs health may stat getting litigious, and the minute Steve Jobs stepped back (versus stepped down) investors started getting wrestless.
