I heard there will be a Seidio skin holster combo!
1) Is this true?
I wanted to ask you about the skin. I have had the silicon skin for the 600, 650 (boxwave and the off brand) and the Speck skin-tight skin. The major flaw with the 600 skin and the Speck was that inside the skin the silicon was recessed for the buttons which made the hard to push.
The Boxwave and the off brand silicon skin were not recessed which made it easy to push the buttons. All users even said it improved ease of use of the 5-way.
2) Please tell me is the skin going to have recessed buttons?
The Speck was not made out of silicon so it lost its shape.
3) What will the Seidio be made out of?
People like skins for protection and grip. But some users who like skins for grip are less worried about protection. These users wand all that can be uncovered, uncovered. Many are the opposite, they want everything covered, the keyboard, the SD slot, the ear piece (with small holes of course so you can hear), even the antenna.
4) Will Seidio be offering 2 skins, one with everything open and one with everything covered?
He replied:
Hi Jim,
Yes, we are in the process of developing a skin/holster combo for the Treo. Right now, it looks as though there will be recesses for buttons - as the feedback we've gotten from most users has said that this is what they prefer. The final material has not been completely decided, but it will be quite strong. We are leaning now toward leaving the items that need to be accessed (headset jack, camera, SD card, etc) open, but again, it hasn't been fully decided yet. We will probably be offering only 1 skin model. I will pass your thoughts on to our development team and see what they think. Thanks very much for taking the time to write about what you'd like to see - we'll definitely take that into consideration.
Thanks James. I guess I will start with the skin and move along with other options from there if I don't find it enough. You still like the Treo skin best of the skins?

Awesome!!!
Hey James, noticed that you have a new "best free program". How mucy have you used this Kmap? Is it stable? I am still using the other program you suggested (directory assistant), it has helped me alot. Thanks for all the hard work, your reviews have saved me a bunch of money.

Oh... what a tangled web we weave!!
Kmaps is awesome, I have been using it for 2 months. It is totally stable. It uses google maps instead of mapquest. The only downside of kmaps is that it needs java to work which is about 2.5 megs and java has to me in RAM. kmaps is about 500k but it can go on the card.

Well as far as skins go:
ZCover is great because it offers quite a bit of protection covering many ports that are usually left uncovered. That may be a draw back for some. But the dpad (5 way) is left uncovered making use of the 5way difficult.
Speck Skin-Tight was great because it was thick and covered more ports offering greater protection but the button were recessed which made it difficult to push the buttons. It was also made of kraton instead of silicon which after time gets stretched out of shape.
Treo Central's silicon skin , Boxwave , Javo skin and all the others are pretty much the same. They leave all ports open, bounce back into shape and dont decrease the ease of use. Most users like them the best.
I dont like any of them for myself. I want all ports covered except for the camera, sync port, headset jack and ringer switch. I would even love for the antenna to be covered along with the keypad. If a silicon skin were made like this I would buy a nice sidekick 2 case to go with it
Help! Need a "case for a woman"- and not always one for the purse!
I have read hours worth of forums and still need advice. Anyone up to the challenge, please help!
I am looking for a case that I can use to carry my treo in my back pocket of my tight girl jeans.
I know many carry their treos in the front pocket, but women's jeans barely have a pocket their and they are too tight! I have always carried my phone in one back pocket and my mini purse/wallet in the other.
I want a case that is easy to pull in and out of my back pocket and will protect the screen from pressure. (and maybe won't make my JLo butt look deformed? The naked treo isn't even visible in my jeans right now!)
Any ideas? I like the skins but are they too sticky? Do any cases that don't cover the screens provide enough "raise" to indirectly protect the screen? Do I need a hard screen protector?
A few other things to mention, about my picky-ness- I want to charge it in the innodock with the case on- my point would be for the treo to always wear this case. I don't want some flap or book cover hanging out their while I talk on my ohone- the Treo is alread a bit big, no need to double size it on my head. I also want a pouch type holder for when I put it in my purse/bag and want to have a low profile clip, maybe an externaly pouch, to wear it on my waistband when I don't have pockets. And a note about most womens pants- maybe of thin, partial spandex material- so the pouch and holder can't pull forward to reveal my own skin to everyone! (a problem with some pants and my old bulky pager.)
And of course, I want to protect my treo from major damges and loss of function. Cosmetic scratches don't bother me, and I have never yet broken a phone, pda, ipod, portable game system, pager, calculator, etc.
Also, if you have expereicne that it is a really really bad idea to back pocket carry a treo, please let me know.
Thanks! Most cases seem more geered to a "man's usage", and would appreciate a woman's prespective!

ps- I love the DB case Jenny, but it is too flashy for my work. Other suggestions?

You would have to get a case with a hard screen cover to keep from putting pressure on the case. Many book and flip lid cases have a firm cover over the screen but these will still bend allowing pressure on the screen. Even with a little "raised"protection there will still be pressure on the screen. The amount that the case would have to be raised around the screen to prevent pressure would be crazy high.

Do I need a hard screen protector?
Even if you have a metal case with an indestructible screen cover I would still recommend a hard screen protector. I personally like the stiff hard screen protectors better than the ultra clear ones.

It would go well in the pocket and slide nicely in a Nutshell when you want to wear it on the hip.
Any case with a hard screen cover is going to make a huge bulge in the jeans.
I don't see anything wrong with carrying the Treo in the back pocket. I would recommend insurance, but I would always recommend insurance no matter what the situation is.
Oh.. I also have a Sena flip cover I bought. It is a slim case that provides good protection and slips in the pocket well. I only used it for one day though. I decided I didn't like the flip cover!
I'd be willing to sell it at a significant discount. Let me know if you are interested.
I love the Vaja cases adn think I might go for one of those. I figure the Treo was $$, the charge docks are $$, the nutshell cases are $$, might as wel buy the Vaja case!
I don't like the flip front either- makes it look like you're talking on a 80's cell phone!
For the Vaja, if you get the clip on the back, can you remove the big bolt for putting it in your pocekt? If not, is there a good pouch with clip that it'll fit in? It seem much larger than a skinned Treo, so the nutshell for skinned treos probably won't work. Maybe a sidekick or generic case?
I'm going to target today to look for generic cases to use while I get my final case.
Is a hard screen protector one of the ones you place directly on the screen, or is it an external case type thing? I'm only famililar with the crystal clear and anti-reflectiv screen protectors.
I bought a 3 pack of screen protectors a year and 1/2 ago from TreoCentral. The are hard instead of the thin film type that roll onto the screen with all the bubbles under the plastic. These aren't as clear but the do an excellent job of protecting the screen and 1 will last the live of the phone. You never have to take it off. And to apply it you just drop it on, no bubbles, piece of cake.
But take away a little from the Treos pretty screen.
Last week in this thread I talked about wearing a skin on my Treo, which I really liked. It surprised me how much I liked the skinned Treo, but it wouldn't fit in my Seidio holster.
This week I tried using my Treo with clear eGrips designed for the Treo. I put the entire set of the eGrips pieces on my Treo--sides, back battery cover, and back top piece. Once I got all the pieces on, very carefully, I liked the feel of the Treo, with the eGrips. The clear version makes the eGrips almost invisible--you see the dimpling of the eGrips, but the pieces really blend into the color of the Treo.
The eGrips made it very easy to hold onto my Treo, without the fear of dropping it I had from time to time using a naked Treo. What surprised me was that I was able to use my Palm cradle, even with the back pieces of eGrips. I also was able to use my Seidio holster with the eGrips on. After several days of using my Treo with the eGrips, taking it in and out of my holster numerous times a day, I noticed the side eGrips pieces were wearing and getting moved slightly by the sides of the holster rubbing against the eGrips.
Finally, today my Nutshell case arrived from New Zealand. It took about 9 days from order to receipt--not bad from that far away! After ripping the package open, I played with the case for a couple of hours tonight. All I can say is that everything JPR and others have said about the Nutshell case is true, and more--I love my Nutshell!!
I got the Nutshell pouch case designed to fit a skinned Treo, with a tab top and the belt loop in the black leather. It is a SWEET case, very well made, with excellent leather. I've never seen a Vaja case, but the Nutshell is also high quality leather. I look forward to seeing how it holds up over time.
I got the belt loop feature, in lieu of the clip, because I wanted the ability to wear the case horizontally or diagonally. With the clip version, you're limited to vertical. With the belt loop version, you can wear it all different ways. I tried all variations, and think for now I'll wear it diagonally, with the antenna angled up. That seems to fit the best in a chair or car.
Since I've got the eGrips on my Treo, I was concerned about how well it would slide in and out of the case. I had no problems. My Treo would slide in and out of the case fairly easily, even with the eGrips. I could do it one handed fairly easily. The eGrips does give it some grip in the case, so it has some resistance. I did try turning the case upside down with the tab open, and the Treo did slide out, even with the eGrips. So the eGrips gives the Treo some resistance in the case, but it is not a tight fit.
I then put my skin on my egripped Treo--so the Treo had both eGrips on and a skin case on--and tried it in the Nutshell designed for a skinned Treo. As you know, most have reported that a skinned Treo does not easily slide out of a case, even a Nutshell case designed for a skinned Treo. The Nutshell folks even admitted to me that you need two hands to pull a skinned Treo out of the Nutshell case. So I wasn't optimistic that my skinned Treo would work well in my Nutshell case.
When I first tried my skinned Treo in the Nutshell case, it was very difficult to get the device in and out of the case. However, I worked with the leather of the case for a while, since I've read that the case expands slightly as the leather case gets "broken in". So after messing with the case and stretching it slightly, I then tried the skinned Treo in the case, with better results. After working with it for a while, I got it where the skinned Treo would slide in and out of the Nutshell case fairly easily--but it still took two hands--my right hand holding the bottom of the case while my left hand pulled the skinned Treo out. But once I got the hang of it, the skinned Treo slide in and out of the Nutshell fairly easily, but using two hands.
So I'm hopefully that I'll eventually be able to use my skinned Treo in the Nutshell with ease. I took my skin back off my Treo, but I intend to try it again with the skinned Treo in a few weeks after I use the case more and break it in.
I'll report further as I continue to use my Nutshell case, but for now, I'd highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good pouch case for his or her Treo!
A few other observations.
First, if you want to use your Nutshell as a pouch case, without the tab flap to cover the top of the Treo and hold it in the case, or if you want the ability to leave the tap flap undone without the risk of your Treo falling out (as JPR does), then you want the regular Treo Nutshell, and not the slightly bigger one designed for a skinned Treo.
Second, why do the Nutshell folks insist on the red label sticking out of the case with the Nutshell name on it? The Nutshell name is already impressed in the leather on the back of the case, on the tab flap, and on the bottom of the case--isn't three enough? I don't think the fourth time on the red label is needed! I foresee using an exacto knife to remove the tag on my Nutshell!
Third, in terms of the case itself, it's a simple pouch case, which can be ordered with or without the tab closure, and with or without a pocket on the front (that could hold an sd card). The case does have a cutout on the bottom for the headphone port. Overall, I think the Nutshell is a very well made case, and you can't go wrong with it if you're looking for a pouch type of leather case for your Treo.
Finally, you know you must live a boring life when the highlight of the day of a 49 year old lawyer is to come home and play with his Treo and Nutshell case!!
Thank you for the wonderful information. I am very curious to see if after a while the Nutshell loosens enough to make using the full egrips a breeze.
LOL I beg to differ Sir,
I live an extremely wonderful exciting life. I spend my nights saving lives on the cardiac unit (occasionally, not every night ) I live everyday striving to be even closer to my wonderful wife and children but I take great joy in messing with anything that relates to Treo.
Thanks JPR. After using my egripped Treo today with my Nutshell case, i can say it is very easy to slide the Treo in and out of the larger Nutshell case, even with full egrips. While grippy (if that is a word), it still slides in and out of the bigger Nutshell with ease, and much easier than the skinned Treo. I am interesting in seeing whether a skinned Treo will slide in and out any easier, once my Nutshell case is "broken" in. I'll let you know in a few weeks. But for now, the larger Nutshell is plenty big enough for the fully egripped Treo.
And thanks for letting us know a little more about you and your life. BTW, how many kids do you have and how old? I've got 2 boys, age 22 and 16, as well as a wonderful wife (age I can't tell you, but it's the same as me).
If the case loosens up enough to allow a user to place the phone in the case without pulling the pants down or pulling the belt to the neck while removing the phone from the case then I will have to apologize to Nutshell. Because I have preached that it was false advertising that a skinned Treo in a Nutshell was doable. Of course theres a range within doable from possible to just before impossible.
P.S. My girls are 2, 4 and 14 The 2 year old is the strong willed one, the 4 year old is a little princess and the 14 year old is 14
It's been almost 6 weeks since i received my Nutshell pouch case designed for a skinned Treo. After this time, I can truly say I love my Nutshell even more than when I first got it. It's an excellent case, that can take a beating on my belt and still look nice, while protecting its precious cargo.
I initially reported that it was very difficult to put a skinned Treo in and out of the Nutshell case, even the case designed to take a skinned Treo. However, I wanted to try it again after I had "broken in" my Nutshell case.
So for the last month I've used my Treo, with full eGrips, in my Nutshell case, with no problems whatsoever. It slid in and out of the Nutshell very easily, even with the full eGrips (full sides and back pieces of eGrips). I'd estimate that I pulled my Treo out of the case and put it back in perhaps a dozen times a day. Last weekend, I figured the case was "broken in", so I put my skin back on my Treo--over the eGrips. So my Treo had both eGrips and a skin case over the eGrips.
When I first tried the skinned Treo with the case, it was stiff to slide in and out. However, after using the skinned Treo in the Nutshell case for the last week, I'm happy to report it got much easier to slide the skinned Treo in and out of the Nutshell. In fact by the end of this week I was pulling the skinned Treo in and out of the case without any problems.
So I'm very pleased with the Nutshell case designed for skinned Treos. I've got no issues with using my skinned Treo with the Nutshell, with one caveat. You cannot realistically pull the skinned Treo in and out of the case with one hand. It can be done, but not with ease. The skin creates resistance, so one-handed use is not very easy. Putting it back in with one hand is fairly easy, but taking it out with one hand is more difficult. Using two hands is generally required to pull the skinned Treo in and out. However, I realized that even with only the eGripped Treo, I was always using two hands to remove my Treo.
I've got the Nutshell with the belt loop attachment. I wear my Nutshell on my belt on the right side of my body, on the diagonal with the case facing up. When I want to pull out my Treo, I use my right hand to hold the end of the case and pull out the skinned Treo with my left hand. I carry the Treo with the screen facing in. So when I need the Treo, I hold the case with my right hand, flip the velco cover up with the index finger on my left hand, and then use my thumb and middle finger on my left hand to pull the Treo out of the case and simulatenously flip it over so the Treo is in the palm of my left hand, screen facing up, ready for use. I do this all in one smooth motion.
So I'm pleased to report I've become very accustomed to pulling the skinned Treo in and out of my Nutshell case with easy, using two hands. It slides in and out fairly easily, with just minor resistance (which gives me comfort that my skinned Treo will not slide out of the case by itself if I leave the flap open).
If you want to use a skinned Treo in a Nutshell with one hand, you're going to be out of luck. But using two hands, it's my belief that most users will have no problems using the skinned Treo in the Nutshell case designed for skinned Treos.
In his last comment, JPR noted: "If the case loosens up enough to allow a user to place the phone in the case without pulling the pants down or pulling the belt to the neck while removing the phone from the case then I will have to apologize to Nutshell." Based on my experiences, IMHO JPR owes an apology to Nutshell. I can testify to the fact that as long as you use two hands, pulling the skinned Treo out of the Nutshell is fairly easy, and definitely doesn't involve pulling the pants down or pulling the belt to the neck. If you insist on one hand use, however, you'll get the experience described by JPR.
So if you are interested in the Nutshell case, and there is a chance you want to use a skin on your Treo, I'd recommend you buy the Nutshell designed a tad bigger to accommodate a skinned Treo. And even if you don't have a skin on your Treo, the extra room in the Nutshell may be worthwhile, especially if you're planning to get the tab closure for the case.
I can't speak to the Vaja case, but if you'll look back in this thread, you'll see a post by JPR and some pictures of the Sena leather case in a Nutshell case. I just don't know how the sizes compare, but you may be able to compare the size of the vaja case to the sena case from their websites.
