If the nutshell comes with a snap get that one . The velcro is too easily worn and not as surely closed as a snap would be. I have the skinned case and of course my skin would not fit it. So if I forget it or miss close the velcro. The Treo 650 can and has become airborne.

The belt clip does hold the phone like a vise, but I still lost it once, and I switched to the belt loop, which is even more secure...a word to the wise!

The edge of the skin is the same height as the 5way button so when you push up/down/left/right your also pushing the skin which takes away from an effective press.

Yes. There are several options for finishes but the finish from one size case to another is the same.

You notice the difference when they are side by side.

Thanks for the additional information. An email from the nutshell folks today also confirmed that the only difference between the original Treo 650 nutshell and the version for the skinned treo is the size. The extra .33 of an inch in width with the skinned version could make it easier to take the treo in and out of the case. But if you don't use a skinned treo with it, would it be too loose for the naked treo? i.e, JPR, in your humble wisdom, if you had to do it over again and buy just one nutshell, would you buy the original version or the skinned version??

thanks for everything,

Nutshell mailed me the Nutshell for skinned Treos and I had both for a bit. I liked how much easier it was to place and remove the Treo in the slightly larger case but ended up sending the larger case to a friend because I like to run around most of the time with the closer flap tucked out of the way, so I choose to keep the smaller case since it gripped the phone more securely.

Thanks JPR. While I surely need to run daily, which I haven't done in years, I'm not likely to pound the pavement with my Treo. So I'm inclined to lean towards the slightly bigger Nutshell case, with the flap.

I did receive yesterday the Smartphone Experts skin I ordered. I really like the skin itself but it doesn't play well with my other accessories. I can charge my Treo in the skin with my Seido Innodock cradle in my office, given that the connection in the cradle moves to accommodate a case, but I can't charge it in the skin at home with my regular Palm cradle. It also won't fit with the skin in my Seidio cradle holster, nor would I expect it to fit with the skin in a Seidio clip holster.

I really like my Seidio holster, but was nervous wearing it with the back of the Treo exposed (like JPR, I don't like to risk scratches on my Treo). But in thinking about it, I like the idea of using the Seidio holster with a skinned Treo. However, a skinned Treo won't fit in the Seidio holsters (listen up Seido, if you can make a leather case for a skinned Treo, why not also make a holster for a skinned Treo?).

In looking at the various holsters available on the market, I didn't see one that would accommodate a skinned Treo, other than the Speck skin which comes with its own holster. Did I miss one? Anyone seen a holster to carry a skinned Treo, particularly one with the screen facing in like the Seidio holsters?

I also received yesterday the clear Egrips for the Treo I ordered. I've not installed them yet, but in looking at them, the clear ones should be pretty invisible. They aren't crystal clear, since they have the traditional nubby Egrips surface, but you can barely see them in the package. I've had a pack of generic silver Egrips, and I put a couple of pieces of them on my Treo, but the silver color stand out like a sore thumb; that's why I bought the clear ones. At this point, however, I think I'm just going to install the side pieces of the clear Egrips and not the back pieces, since the sides are where I need them the most, and I've heard that you can't get it to fit in the Palm cradle if you use the back pieces of Egrips.

Thanks again JPR for this great thread and all the knowledge!

No, you didnt miss any. There are pouch cases for skinned treos but Speck has the only holster and it works better with their skin since their skin is thicker. But their skin makes it difficult to push buttons and their holster is not very secure.

I would love to know If the bigger Nutshell allows for the full egrip (sides and back) if you could please add to our knowledge base that would be great!

Thumbs up best case by far

After going back and forth regarding which sort of case to get, I finally found this one, http://store.treocentral.com/content.../4-23--86.htm.

This thing is great! the front of the phone has a barn-door style cover, with just the top of it closing and protecting the screen with clear hard plastic but leaving the keypads and togggle acccessible. Except for strategic cut outs for things like the camera, etc, the rest of the phone is encased in anodized aluminum with neoprene inside, so if you drop it there's a bit of padding inside to protect it against shocks. The only problem I had was with the clip itself, so I'd suggest trying to get them to give you an extra one when you call. For $40, it was DEFINITELY worth it.

Case for full egrips

I've followed this thread from the beginning, and I decided to get a SidekickII horizontal case. I've been able to put ALL the egrips on and it comes in and out of the case without any problem.

My only problem is that I'm in my car alot, and needed a good mount, which is a "Pro-Clip". I've had to do some "surgery" to make the phone fit with the egrips applied.

That was the only case I had that I didnt do a review on. The wifie was getting on to me about spending to much time messing with Treo stuff

I had to file down the area over the d-pad to make room for my thumb and I have skinny thumbs

The door didnt close securely because the case itself was so flexible. I had read about others bending their case back into shape but I had no idea that the case was that flimsy. I had to bend it into shape several times to keep the rough aluminum edges away from my phone.

The case itself actually scratched my phone twice. I gave it away for free over at treocentral.

Well I pulled the trigger tonight and ordered my Nutshell. I got the slightly larger one for skinned Treos, black, belt loop, with tabbed top. I figured the tiny bit of extra room wouldn't hurt, whether its a naked Treo, skinned Treo, or egripped Treo. If a skinned Treo will go in it, I'm sure an egripped one would also--it's just getting the booger out that may be the problem. I'd say an eGrip will grip just as much as a skin, if not harder.

I'll be sure to try out my Nutshell when I get it with the eGrips and let everyone know how it goes. Too bad it's so hard to get a skinned Treo out of the Nutshell. As noted earlier today, I got a skin for my Treo to try one out, and I surprised myself--I really liked it. Of course it didn't fit in my Seidio holster, so I was back to carrying it in my shirt pocket--but even that felt better today than previously--I was always nervous with it in my shirt pocket every time I started to bend over. Today it felt much better since the skin anchored it pretty well in my shirt pocket, so I didn't feel it was about to fall out (but I still wouldn't want to bend over to pick something up without holding the skinned Treo in my shirt pocket!).

I still would love to find a holster that would carry the Treo with the screen facing in, like my Seidio holster, but big enough to carry a skinned Treo. Listen up Seidio--I think there would be a market for your two types of holsters, big enough to hold a skinned Treo. You would only have to modify the present models just a hair! Hint, Hint--I'd sure buy one!

holster for skinned Treo

As I await receipt of my Nutshell case for a skinned Treo, I'm still looking for a holster to hold a skinned Treo. I've got both of the Seidio holsters, which I love, but you can't fit a skinned Treo into those holsters. In a thread on mytreo.net the folks from Seidio indicated they are working on a skin/holster combination that should be out soon. I suggested they also make a holster to carry a skinned Treo. They indicated they are considering the issue and will likely offer for sale separately the new holster that will be part of their skin/holster combination. I hope so; I'd be their first customer for such a holster.

Thanks for the great news about the Seidio skin holster combo. I'm running over to Treocentral to question our man David Chang, Seidio rep about this one.

Awesome!!!

You have great taste obviousley because you have a Treo,,,,,,, but really, you like those nylon holsters better than a leather holster?

Nah....I'd dig a leather holster. But I work in the theater industry and I need the right mix of ultra durable and usability (i'm upside down sometimes ands dropping is not an option). Plus I'm a big fan of "well-designed". I like the idea of a hard holster with a skin. I just wish I could find one....ugh. I might go with the Nutshell and a skin.

h2s04, keep a look out for the Seidio skin/holster combination, which I understand is currently in development.

Is there a skin case with a pocket built in?

I have read through all the great reviews and comments in this thread and have found them really useful and informative. But I still want more.

I like carrying my phone in my pocket. I am replacing a Palm 515 and clamshell phone with a Treo 650, and still want to carry it in my pocket (either pants or suit jacket depending on the occasion). From what I am reading the Treo skin sounds like the right protection for me. However, I also use a wallet type cover for my Palm 515 that has a pocket and card slots and carry this regularly in my jacket pocket. So here' my question...

Is there a skin case that has a small pocket built in that could fit a few business cards, or an sd card, but still be comfortable enough to slide into a pocket?

If not a skin, is there some other slim case that has all functions immediately accessbible that would do the job and fit easily into a pants pocket?
