Must say this threat proved to be very informative. Bottom line, my ideal case does not exist
Bought the nutshell based on this threat and although it is a good case, I find it a bit hard to get my treo out. Also, it doesn't really work for me while using the treo as an MP3 player on the bike. I need blind access to at least a few keys for that.
I'm also thinking about using my treo for GPS navigation on my bike on occasion. The nutshell would not help me there either.
So when I got a 20% discount voucher, I bit the bullet and ordered a vaja iVolution T65. I know about the beltclip, but I already have vaja cases for my (retired) pocket loox, ipod and previous mobile phone and before I read this threat I wan't bottered by it at all
And just for comparison I also ordered the boxwave flexiskin with clip.
Both should cater for my MP3 requirements. And at the office I can always switch to the nutshell.
LOL... I'm trying to not become one of those people, so I've limited myself to a TreoSkin and a SideKick II case recommended by JPR. That is, until my Treo actually gets here (yeah, little bitter about this 3-4 week shipping delay for Verizon Treo's from P1)... after I get it, who knows... might need to empty a dresser drawer to make way for my Treo-wear
Preface- this case is more suited for the female tech geek, who happens to have an addiction to high-end purses
I'm upgrading to a 650 from a 600 (just ordered it through my B2B yesterday- only $169 after discounts!) and, of course, the next big purchase had to be the case.
I'd had my eye on the 650 Vaja i-Volution for a few weeks, but the price was just way too steep for my taste. I needed something that would cover the screen and the base price was a mere $130 (+ clip + shipping + waiting a few weeks for delivery= uh uh). I also prefer a naked Treo, so a form-fitting case was not first on my list.
So, I went browsing on the PalmOne site to see what they had up to offer (after following a link to the Timbuk2) and, lo and behold, there IT was!!!
An authentic Dooney & Bourke pouch case for the Treo!!! Wow! $69 later (w/ overnight shipping- I'll probably get the case before the phone comes in) I'll soon be looking at the most perfect case made for the Treo... ever!
BTW, there was also a link on this same page for a D&B matching purse (completely unrelated to Treo in any way- it just happens to be the same IT color/pattern as the Treo case) - interesting move on the marketing team. I'm curious to see if it will work. Women do love to match. =)
I'll probably post again once I get everything in. =)
My wife peeked at the screen while I was reading email and said "WOW is that a Dooney & Bourke case!!!"
I would love to hear your thoughts on it after you recieve your treo and your case.
My 2 cents is that it dosent cover the phone enough to toss it in a purse with other stuff so it would have to be in a pocket all its own. And I would not personally dangle my Treo from my wrist by a lanyard. So it dosent look very functional but it is pretty cute.
P.S. Please tell us about your user name its pretty interesting

Personally, I like my custom modified Innopocket hard case. The phone is extremely well protected and I don't have to worry about skins, because I never take it out of the case!

"FCC Safety Statement:
In order to comply with FCC RF exposure safety guidelines, users MUST use one of the following types of body-worn accessories.
1. A palmOne brand body-worn accessory that has been tested for SAR compliance and is intended for use withthis product.
2. An accessory that contans NO metal (snaps, clips, etc.) and provides AT LEAST 1.5 cm of separation between the users body and the unit.
Do not use the device in a manner such that it is in direct contact with the body (i.e. on the lap or in a breast pocket). Such use will likely exceed FCC RF safety exposure limits. See www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety/ for more information on RF exposure safety."
This is a direct quote from the TREO manual page 272. Manufacturers are not sure about the RF implications so those that are cautious tend to be way conservative.
Got the message, JPR, and will try to accomodate soon. The mods are simple: using a dremel I enlarged the slot over the 5-way, send, and end buttons. With my fat fingers I couldn't press them adequately. I still can't, but it's better. I may enlarge it even further. Also, the clip peg must be user-installed on the back of the case. The peg includes a hard plastic washer to go between the base of the peg and the back of the peg. The peg then screws into threads on the back of the case. I smashed the washer the first time that I tightened the peg. When I removed the washer, I found that the threaded portion of the peg protruded through the case and scratched the back of the phone. My fix was to install a 2.5 mm nut of the proper thread onto the peg before attaching it to the case. Problem solved! Lastly, install a screen protector on the outside of the plastic faceplate, or it won't last long!
A final note: I am incredibly careless, and bang into things constantly. After almost a month, the case has just a few scratches and a slight nick in the display cover. I am guessing that I would have seriously damaged the phone if not for the case. I also don't much care how far the clip protrudes from my belt (I always wear a belt), but others may not care for the case size. BTW, I have used it several times on my bicycle shorts (no belt) and it seems very secure.

Okay, so I promised JPR that I would post a full review of the skinned Treo with the Sidekick II case that he recommended... so here it goes (click on each pic for a larger version).
Pro's:
1. Excellent fit for the skinned Treo (using a TreoCentral S650 skin).
2. Horizontal case can be looped to your belt or just clipped on using a regular leather-covered metal clip.
3. Pretty low profile for a horizontal case (I have a little extra at my waistline, but this was very comfortable on the right front of my waistline with no discomfort sitting or driving, and really doesn't add much "noticeable" bulk.
4. Strong closure with two magnets.
5. Soft felt lining (this is also a con... read below)
6. Must mention the near perfect fit again.
Con's:
1. Soft felt lining.
2. Does add visual bulk, but again, not really noticeable.
Okay, so with the perfect fit, secure closure, and relatively stream-lined appearance and feeling, you would think that this is the perfect case... BUT, with repetitive placement and removal of the skinned Treo into the holster, the friction of the silicon/rubber skin against the felt inner lining causes a lot of black felt lint buildup on the skin itself and on the exposed parts of the Treo. I had to take my phone out of the skin and wash the skin in a sink and wipe the Treo with a damp cloth to remove the build-up. WARNING: this stuff will get into your keyboard, mic, earpiece, and any other openings of the skin.
This in itself it reason enough to not use these products together (for me, at least). I know that most Treo owners are pretty picky about their expensive gadget, and on average, probably wouldn't want to deal with such a mess that could potentially affect the functionality of the device.
On a side note, I tried using the NuShield screen protector, and I don't know what the problem is, but it DOES NOT fit the screen. I supposedly have the newer model of protector, but none of the three in the pack fit the screen, and even after I trimmed one down, I couldn't use my stylus and it stuck to the screen (yes, I had it on correctly with the correct side to the screen). I trimmed down one of my WriteRight Zire 71 screen protectors and will use that for now (I used these on my Zire and all of my cell phone screens, never had a problem with them).
I'm at a loss with the skinned Treo. I love the skin for the feel and protection, but putting it in any pocket whatsoever causes friction buildup of lint (had it in my dress shirt breast pocket for most of the day today and had to clean off fine lint that stuck like "white on rice." I think I'm going to try using the PalmOne fitted leather case (after cutting out the plastic over the screen) and seeing how that works. If that doesn't work, I'm back to square #1.
Well... nix the leather OEM PalmOne "form-fitted" leather case... completely takes away the functionality of the stylus because the plastic is so far away from the LCD screen. AGH! Now I don't know what to do
I took some duct tape (fixes everything) and started just blotting the lining away, but that was taking way too much time and way too much tape... so, in an act of desperation... I took my kitchen dish scouring pad to it with some soap water and scrubbed it all off. I inverted the case so that it was inside out and just went to town with lots of good ol' elbow grease. It was a faux felt lining that was mostly just glued/stuck on with some sort of light adhesive (but it was strong). So now I have the nylon sub-lining exposed, and it still feels well padded. It's drying in front of a fan now, but here's a couple pics of it...
I'll dry it overnight (may take a haird dryer to it) and use it tomorrow... I'm praying this works... cause I really like the combination...
The Nutshell with the belt clip has now come off my belt twice. On the first occasion I had noticed that it had become slightly dislodged and crooked on my belt, but ignored it, and it later fell off. The second occasion I am certain it must have become dislodged first, but didn't see it, and didn't realize it had come off until my 2 year old told me my telephone was lying in the street.
It is definitely the strongest belt clip I have ever seen or used, but it still isn't strong enough to deal with removing a 2 year old from a car seat strapped into the middle of the back of the car, then carrying her across a parking lot. Various limbs, kicks, and narrow car doors are too much for that spring steel to resist. It's back to the nutshell with the belt loop for me. In order to get that back from my wife, however, I had to order her a new one with the mother of pearl inlay. This was not included in my original Treo budget.
mdavis I hope your Treo wasnt damaged. Did you go for the slightly bigger Nutshell?
Speaking of damaged palms my 13 year old threw her sheets in the wash only to find out and hour later her Tungsten E was extremely clean but completely useless. I took it apart, it must of had a full charge because it was fried.
BUmmedic if you case ends up missapen I'm sure there are sidekick cases that do not have shedding liners. I think T Mobil has sidekick cases in their stores.
No damage at all. It was still in the Nutshell case.
No, I did not go for the bigger one because my wife seems satisfied with the standard--as long as her treo is not skinned and, as you know, the nutshell of whatever size does not work with a skinned nutshell. So I got her a new one of standard size, and I get in return my old standard sized one. I would have liked it slightly bigger but as I said in my review, the standard one actually looks a bit smarter (minimally so, I suppose) and so I'm happy with it. Or will be when my wife gives it up to me.

The case is now mostly dry... not leaking water (so I'm using it). Other than now looking like a well worn case with a softer more flexible feel to it, it's working really well. The faux felt is all gone, and I haven't had a single issue using it today. I think I've finally found the perfect combination
PS - of course, only time will tell, but I'll keep everyone updated regarding all of this... thanks, JPR... as always, a great help!
