i just recieved a treo 600 for my wife. this is her first pda/phone and we are concerned about the internet kilobyte usage. we called and got the phone activated and advised the cs rep that we did not want a data plan, which was fine with them. i heard about the treo 650 automatically connecting to the internet periodically, causing huge bills to people for kiobyte usage. is this a problem with the treo 600? how do you make sure that the phone does not connect to the interent or does not connect to any kind of data transfer unless we specify it to do so. also, when a text message is sent, there are the arrows at the top indicating that a data connection is established. it grays out when the text message is sent (dormant mode), but doesnt go away. is there a way to manually disconnect to the data connection after sending a text or picture message? thanks
There is a treo 600 connection manager for download at palmgear that is available for purchase. It automatically disconnects at a time you preset that the data connection is inactive.

If you know the Vision Settings for your Treo, or if you are on Verizon, you can manually program the data settings, which enables the Idle Time menu in Network Connect.
On the Treo 600 (and I have the Verizon version) the only problem with long connections that I know of was with the MMS program. To stop it, go into the MMS app, go to the preferences menu, and deselect "Automatically collect Messages".
Next, go to the Prefs. Under the Network section, hit the menu button, then go to options. Make sure "Connect To the data network whenever wireless mode is powered on" is UNCHECKED and also that "Ask before connecting to the internet" is CHECKED.
That's it. You no longer have to worry about suddenly finding out you were connected to the data network for hours and didn't know it.
Oh yeah, one more thing. Search the freebie websites for "DALauncher" and also for "NetConnectDA". Using Desk Acessories, you can pop up a little windo that will allow you to connect or disconnect without ever leaving the program you are in.
