If this arrives before the VX6700 or the i730 WC, I will probably buy this.

It's pretty surprising to me to see that Verizon is going to be releasing this Windows-based Treo first. Verizon has developed a reputation for being the last carrier on the block to support the Treos.

I guess they decided it was time to take the lead and get the customers back. If they Palm, MS and Verizon do what they promise and Verizon doesn't mess up the BT part then its a winner.

And this would move me back to Verizon.

I think that for the most part Verizon only limits bluetooth on lower end(nonsmart) phones.

Oh no, VZW is now an equal opportunity bluetooth crippler. Whether it's the Moto 710 (caused a lawsuit) or the latest i730 from Samsung.

Verizon sees lots of corp users and money from this device. But alas push/pull aka shove email won't be fully supported until early 2006 and then they need SP2 for exchange oh well.

Treo 700W out Jan. 5

Went to VZW store yesterday, and customer rep said definitely the 700w would be on the shelves Jan. 5. Had gone in to swap an LG VX9800 for an i730. It was the end of the 14-day trial/probation/whatever period. Told the rep that I had some concerns about reliability, stability and battery life on the i730, and the rep rather kindly offered to extend the trial period another two weeks so I could consider the 700w. It won't have WiFi, obviously, but he thought it would be more reliable. Any thoughts out there on whether this rings true, and also on whether the 700w is likely to sound better on calls than the 650?

There is a rumor that the I730 will be updating to Windows Mobile 5.0. I will probably wait and see before deciding between that and the Treo 700w.

From my personel experince, I found the 700w to handle alot better. As im in wdts i troubleshoot these things all day long. And known that my opinions are not of verizon's btw.

My biggest concern with the 700w is the screen size. I currently have a 240 X 320. The 700w looks like is is 240 X 240, or smaller than the I730.

I currently have an HP hw6515 with the 240x240 screen. It's not as bad as you may think, but some apps don't display correctly. The I730 screen size is physically smaller than the hw6515 (as the I730 is itself smaller/narrower) but has a very sharp resolution (# of pixels per inch.)

vzwpeon,
How about a few details? When you say ``handle a lot better,'' are you talking user interface, keyboard, general userability or stability and reliability?

All of the above. Its pretty nice. The keyboard is pretty much the same with the exception of 2 fast keys at the top for alot better userability and has keys for quick launch of the start menu etc.
The stability of it is solid. I tried to mess it up and it with stood alot of punishment. Bad apps and other such and it held its own.
The reliabiility was pretty good, I never notice it dropping a call or flaking out for any reason.
The browser upgrade in the device is nice. As now it has a status bar and you can zoom in on certain parts of a site that you are viewing so you dont have to squent.

So over all its pretty nice. But you can find out for yourself in next two days as its being released Jan. 5th 2006

Thanks for this. One last thing, the dealbreaker personally on Treos has been the sound quality. The i730 simple sounds better than the 650. Did you note any changes going from the 650 to the 700w on voice quality?

The 700w does have better voice quality than the 650
Though its tough for me to say whether its better than the 730
I would say its just as good as the 730.
I placed about 15 calls with the device with a friend and it sounded good when I used it on every try.

Much appreciated. Probably will buy it Jan. 5. I hope you'll consider posting some observations on software compatibility.
