The Five Hundred Pound Mouse

Walt Disney Co. announced today its entry into the cellular marketplace, targeting families with a wireless service under its own brand that will seek to sell cellphones to children and their parents. Disney Mobile will be a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) using the CDMA/1xRTT/EV-DO digital networks of SprintPCS, the country's third-largest cellphone operator in terms of subscribers as per the Wall Street Journal. Disney will sell the handsets and service, which will be Disney-logo'd.

The WSJ noted Disney's newest plans are to tap into its loyal family audience and reputation for delivering children's entertainment to capture a big slice of what it sees as an underserved market for family-focused services. "There is a strong business opportunity here," said Steve Wadsworth, president of the Walt Disney Internet Group. "We bring a lot of unique understanding of this market." And, please, no jokes about 'Mickey Mouse' phones... for the ILEC which serves Disney World was (when I worked for another ILEC in Florida) and still is the envy of every small independent local exchange carrier. Disney has vision, and a grasp of technology few other high-tech companies have ever reached. In fact, given the success Disney has in reaching out into new markets (ESPN comes to mind), I look for them to be major players in the world telecomms market within a decade.

Folks, content is king: Why else woiuld it be news that Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast has cut a deal to bring MAGIC: The Gathering to cellphones? Because Content encourages Users to burn more minutes, and More Minutes = More Profit.

WSJ subscribers can see videos discussing Disney's plans, and a Steve Wadsworth interview on Disney selling branded phones.
