We saw some early reports about a radical new design for a Windows Mobile based pdaPhone a few days back... then expected to be called the MPx300. This week, at the 3GSM World Conference, Motorola officially took the wraps off of this interesting looking device. Before we get to that one, Motorola also officially announced the MPx100, a candy bar styled device based on Microsoft Smartphone OS. It comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera and bluetooth. It's nice to see that pdaPhones are starting to get respectable camera specs!
Now, back to the MPx. This is a device that I would have expected to find that Sony had it's hand in. With the mechanical marvels of some of Palm's recent Clies, the MPx is unlike anything out there. It has a dual hinge that allows it to open like a large clamshell in one direction, or as a very small palm top with QWERTY keyboard in the other direction. In the later mode, the screen is in landscape mode, an ideal setup for web browsing and email. The Windows Mobile 2003 system will have to seamlessly handle the perpendicular switching for this to be productive.
The MPx also comes with integrated 802.11B (something I expect to see more of this year in pdaPhones), as well as Bluetooth, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. This is yet another pdaPhone that is taking advantage of Microsoft allowing smaller screen sizes, in this case 2.8" (vs. 3.5" on the older Pocket PC phones). I can't wait to sample one of these!
