I think the real solution is going to be to drop PHPBB and get something new.... does anyone have any experince with or advice for us reguarding which one to get? It doesn't look like the free route is going to work, so we're going to have to purchase something. I know that a lot of the board packages are quite expensive. Jimmyjoe and I are as sick of these problems as you guys are... If anyone wants to chip in or help there is a PayPal donate button at the bottom of the page...

All of you know what we are trying to achieve with this board, so you know what features we are all looking for or would be a nice addition... so lets see what software everyone thinks would work the best, and we'll go from there....

Sorry for the board inconveniences,

Sorry for the board inconveniences,
there is an excellent forum software package called "ikonboard".
best of all, it's free.
http://www.ikonboard.com

i'm an admin on a forum that uses it and it is great.
i'm not the technical admin, i'm the operational admin so i can't speak to any of the tech part, but their site has everything including a wonderful forum for discussing their app and how to make it work better and help with problems.

it has a wonderful user interface, admin/moderator area and excellent scalabilty.

[size=24:d33b9d9b99]VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION: [/size:d33b9d9b99]If you go with a new format, we lose all of these past threads, right?!?!?!?!?!?!?

If that is the case, then we should NOT switch, because we have 18 months of archived knowledge that is still being utilized every day. We CANNOT afford to lose everything that has been discussed here.

Am I right guys (& gals)?

i agree that the exisitng forum info should be salvaged.
even if just a link to the "old forum" with no posting or replying allowed in there (here).

these problems are only going to get worse and eventually the entire forum will collapse under the strain.

IMHO

Markito and all - Most of the BB software we've used alows you to import the old messages (as we did earlier this year when switching to PHPBB). We DEFINITELY will not get rid of all of the current threads!

iBug - Thanks for the tip, we'll take a look at ikonboard.

Unfortunately, Jimmyjoe and I will both be leaving town today, and not returning until roughly the 1st, so we will be unable to do any MAJOR changes (like switching software ) but it will be a top priority once we get back. We will however still be checking in on the board when Sprint coverage permits

thanks for your input everyone!

ALTHOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUGHHHHHHHHHHHH.........

A major switchover like that could in fact be the [b:38e5af15bc]BEST[/b:38e5af15bc] opportunity to do some serious spring cleaning...I agree that we don't want to loose the knowledgebase, or the sense of "community" that is only created in this type of universe through the browsing of original, individual posts.

BUT...

Somethings could be lost. For example:
The FAQ Discussions could be jettisoned, in favor of a more organized and useful FAQ, as we have previously discussed and as Disgruntled Tech did some fabulous follow-up work on...

We could also reorganize the structure of the boards as has been discussed, to help keep the structure helpful and supportive as the 6035 becomes obsoleted... (I.E., the palm-specific boards vs. the Hardware-specific boards.) Again, in doing so, this would be a great time to pull the most relevant discussions into their new, rightful homes. It wouldn't be necessary to drag everything over, I like the idea of a link to the "old" site, so there's backup of whatever arcane subject some is researching. But howbout it? Why don't we strategize and make this a big step forward for the smartphonesource?

I volunteer to finalize assembly (thanks again to DT) of the 6035 FAQ and to moderate that topic into the future. (Just please don't tell my girlfriend. "You're doing WHAT? Why don't you get a job first and then **** around on the computer afterwards? How about that?)

it's all about the $$$

i agree that vbulletin is really nice, but pricey.

the free ikonboard will do what we need, IMHO.

I checked out the ikonboard site.... definitely looks nice. Seems like it has all of the features we need. If that's what we go with, I'm cool with that. And I'm willing to help in any way I can.

I agree. It would be great to use the mobile version when I have a 7135!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[quote:944b8d7256]I'm not familiar with any other platforms. [/quote:944b8d7256]

Same here. I visit PIC (palminfocenter) daily, but it's discussion bb program is average.

[quote:944b8d7256]If part of the decision on the new platform is cost related I will definitely help as much as I can[/quote:944b8d7256].

Same here (but only if it has a mobile version as meantioned above).

I agree with the above. Treocentral's mobile version looks good on the 6035, will probably look better on the 7135. We need it, whatever the cost.

I have setup numerous ikonboards in the past. THey are great. I still maintain 2 of them. They support PHP now too, so maybe you can salvage this by just backing up the DB's and reassigning to a new frontend? I always use the SQL approach.

From what I have seen, the DB seems ok, the front end isn't processing it correctly though. I can generally fool the board by changing numbers in the URL to get what I want to see. For example, a thread that has 3 pages, sometimes only displays 2. Not because there are only 2, but rather that the PHP frontend is not accessing it correctly.

I don't know didly about PHP, just making some observations.

i know even less than didly about php, but i have been manipulating the url to do the same thing, including getting to this page of this thread.

i'm sick of the probs and it is obviously slowing traffic on this forum.

this board will probably self-destruct when the 7135 comes out, if not before.

the main admin (jimmyjoe?) seems dis-interested in the daily ops of this forum.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say that... they have been out of town for a while, and it's possible that we are pushing phpBB to it's limits and having problems that can't easily be solved without switching to a new platform. This is something that jimmyjoe and jazz said they would address immediately when they return.

I think that the common sense solution is IkonBoard... and hopefully those of you that are familiar with it will offer to lend a hand to help make it a smooth transition (if they go with IkonBoard). I don't know anything about maintaining a board, but would be happy to be taught what I would need to know to have some role in keeping the new board(s) running once we start flooding them with posts about our new 7135's :
