I'm a newbie to the mobile phone world, but a friend sold me a Sony P800, but I've been having a few problems with it.
Firstly, although the phone is a marvel of modern technology, I can not use it for more than a couple of hours a day! - 3 at the most!
at first I thought it was the phone's charger (a 3rd party one), so I searched around ebay and found a genuine Sony Ericsson charger, which, although it looked as though it was charging the battery, the battery still drained at a rapid rate.
So, I also purchased another 'brand new' 1250mAh battery, and the effect is the same - it will show no more than 95% charge, even when on the charger for a couple of days - and drains almost immediately, upon disconnection from the charger - with a lot of heat emitted from the rear flap!
According to the Sony/Ericsson manual, the battery indicator is supposed to 'pulse' when it is charging, and when the phone is off, the light is supposed to flash 'red' in colour - My phone does not do this - instead, the green LED flashes, and although the phone is left on the charger for days, that's all the LED will do!
At first, I thought it may have been, because I inserted the Power connector in the opposite way round, when I first bought the phone - but upon further examination, I found that this was impossible!

from what you describe, it seem to me that your phone is faulty...there might be a problem with the circuit that allows the battery to get recharged.....
if your phone is brand new, there's no reason why you will not be able to get it fixed or even replaced under warranty...if you got it 2nd hand...well...i guess you will need to invest a bit more into it.
to my knowlede, the Px00 range is pretty good with its battery usage.

I have had my P800 for 1.5 years, and all was well until the last 4-6 months. What I find on my unit is : when looking at the connectors where the battery goes. that some of the contacts have lost their resiliency - tension. So when you view the location where the battery is placed, with the battery out of the p800, the same side where the stylus goes, the left most contact seems to have lost its tension and sometimes touches the contact to the right of it. When this happens, the battery drains very fast, like in 2 or 3 hours. when i am able to keep the two apart, the battery might last 6-10 hours- depending on usage. I am going to send it in for repair. As i love my P800 and no other unit out there compares - with the exception of the P900. Hope this helps you - I will post another message after repairing the unit to inform you of theory.
I have exactly the same problem and am watching this thread with great interest.
I looked at the battery contacts and can see that the contacts are a bit bent. However, while there are 5 bits of metal on the phone there are only 3 points of contact on the battery; earth, - & +. Now, the metal that is bending is only shorting out the metal that touches the same contact anyway so it shouldn't make any difference.
To try any figure out what's causing the power drain I've taken it all apart to leave just the battery, screen and board with the battery weighted down with a power supply
The result: still went flat quickly :/
Wish I could replace the recharge circuit. If I could just get hold of one that would be something.
I sent the phone away to be repaired but it came back the same without a charge. They were really busy so I can't be 100% sure they checked it. However, I gues the only thing left to do is replace the mainboard somehow, possibly by a new phone :p

Another option is to get a larger battery. We have in stock the 2000mAh battery for the P800. Since the battery that came with the phone is only a 680mAh battery you can get almost 3x the duration with this battery.
Of course the best method is to reduce the software used in the background, but if you need the programs running, this could be a viable option.
