Ok John, back to the HT820. In addition to being able to listen to music will it also do standard calls? I'm hoping that i can get rid of my 850 and just use the 820.

Hal

Yes, the HT820 does both stereo music listening and has a mic to do phone calls. One side controls the music and the other side controls the phone. Apart from the bulkiness, they are wonderful.

Blackjack/Smartphone as RDP client

Hi John,

This may be a little tangent, but I got a Blackjack today - my first PDAphone.

Not usually impulsive, I had a free few minutes near a Cingular store, and so grabbed one and took advantage of the offer for an additional freebie phone for my wife. I recalled reading (elsewhere, and confirmed by you here) that the phone performance of the Blackjack is superlative, and it is small - both characteristics that are high on my list.

So, I bought it (over the Treo 680 or Nokia E62) because of its "phone" qualities, BUT the only reason for going PDA at all is that I'd like to use it for remote access to servers that I admin. While I might appreciate other abilities in time, the RDP is the only "extra-phone" feature I care about now.

I have MS Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) universally deployed, with a tiny bit of PCAnywhere. Not interested in running VNC or alternatives at this point. So, two questions come to mind:

1) I'm assuming RDP client is readily available for the WinOS phones/PDAs (though I've not found it yet), and I've seen them out there for Palm and Symbian. Any little quirks that handicap one or the other, or are they all reasonably functional?

2) It occurs to me that I may be a little frustrated with remote control, since this thing doesn't have a touch screen or any apparent pointer control. Guess my mind was more oriented to phone rather than computer... I'm not averse to using keyboard in the GUI, and I won't use it all the time for this - it's mainly for emergencies in odd places, but those are usually the times that you need to get something done. Any experience or feedback on using the Blackjack (or other non-touch device) for this?

I'll keep digging here in the forums, but if you know this area well, or can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it!

Many thanks!
Gary

P.S. on price - Got the Blackjack and a Mot SLVR L7 for $150 total (after rebates) while re-upping my Cingular service for 24 months.

Gary,

I don't believe the Smartphone OS has the RDP client for network access, for exactly the reasons you mention. Without a touch screen, and with no real cursor control, I'm not sure I'd even want to try using it for that. Granted, I had the same thought as you, but I also have been doing this long enough to know that for any real RDP, I would use my laptop. I haven't even tried to look for the remote access client on my Blackjack.

Otherwise, the only client I have seen discussed for the Smartphone is the VNC client. I don't think the Symantec pcA client works on Smartphone either.

Got my 6945 the other day, and I must say John, you were right. Its what the 6515 should have been. Loving it to death... (and the radio seems to be a tad better as well... I'm not having as much trouble with dropped calls as I was before, but we'll have to wait and see how things go this week...

I'd pick the Blackjack (since I did...) The Pearl doesn't have any Word or Excel editing either, unless you get a third-party app. The Pearl is a better email device (as all Blackberries are) but I'd rate the Blackjack higher as a phone and as a multipurpose device.
