T-Mobile Scraps Plans for Microsoft Smartphone Release

<img src="images/tmobilelogo1.jpg" align="right">Reuters is reporting that T-Mobile, Europe's second largest mobile phone carrier announced today that they have decided to abandon their efforts bring a pdaPhone based on Microsoft Smartphone to market. T-Mobile had announce their plans to deliver such a product about 6 months ago.

This is a big blow to Microsoft's efforts to dominate the mobile phone market, but they have stamina like no other company I've ever seen... and huge amounts of cash. They will keep at it for years and never give up. It will be interesting to see if they publicly comment on this announcement.

Do you think that Microsoft is on track with the Smartphone, or not?

I've seen previews of Microsoft SmartPhones and I think they could have a good product there. Unfortunately, I just don't see the product catching on in the general market place. For example, I don't see my father ever getting a smartphone so that he can check his email or send SMS when he's away from home and check the sports scores and movie showtimes.

The general information I've seen seems to indicate they think the smart phone would appeal to the general population. I don't see that. I can see it appealing to techies and wannabe techies, but not to the general public.

Would I buy one? Sure, I probably would. Would everyone? I don't think so. Even the smallest SmartPhone is going to be bigger than the little Morotola flip phone from what I've seen. Although I freely admit that I need to do more research on it again.

everyone

I don't think Microsoft believes everyone is going to get a Smartphone. I think there plan is to start there and then move down. They started with desktop PCs... that was their roots. Then they pushed up and down... servers and PDAs. Now they are pushing into game consoles, TV set top boxes, cars, and .... mobile phones. My guess is they will start with the Smartphone and keep trying until they get that right... then they will use their position there with the carriers to push down to a low end platform for regular mobile phones. And... then they will rule the galaxy!!!

T-Mobile had problems with the HTC Tanager. The SPV is an HTC Canary. Based on the expected timing of late in the year, it's possible to see a T-Mo device made by ? running Smartphone 2003.

even if smartphones are slow to take off for microsoft, they must diversify their company from operating systems to other businesses

plus they got a lot of cash sitting around, why not make good use of it
