According to a c/net story, AT&T Wireless will announce today that they will be offering a Microsoft Smartphone powered pdaPhone from Motorola. The Motorola MPx200 will be available from the carrier before the end of the year for their GSM/GPRS network. The MPx200 will be available next month in Europe from carrier Orange. While Microsoft's Smartphone OS has done pretty well in Europe, no major US carriers have yet to offer the devices in the US.
The MPx200 is a clamshell design and powered by a 200Mhz XScale processor with 32MB of RAM. It has a tri-band radio (900/1800/1900Mhz) which should allow worldwide usage on any GSM/GPRS network. The MPx200 also has an SD/MMC memory slot (not SD/IO). The device measures 1.88 x 3.50 x 1.06 inches. It has 270 minutes of talk time, and 112 hours of standby time.
Rumors indicate that Orange will again lock the device so that only applications certified by Orange can be used. No word on whether AT&T Wireless will follow the same strategy. I do know that AT&T Wireless phones in the US are carrier locked, and the do not give unlock codes like other carriers will do.
