Cool PDA Friendly Forum Skin - Public Beta

Ok folks, you can now test the PDA Friendly skin at http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/index.php?styleid=10 . If you need to get back to the fullscreen, it is http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/index.php?styleid=7 . Cookies should keep them set on the different devices, so it shouldn't be a problem. So, if you log in on your PDA and select the PDA skin, then it should stay that way on that device. You can log in with the same ID on your PC, and select the full screen skin, and it will stay that way also. The cookie controls it, so each device should remember the correct skin.

There are a few issues that I am aware of, but I wanted to get feedback from the community at large before having the developer fix it. This is a beta... meaning, it isn't expected to be perfect. Over time, the PDA Skin may become part of a premium offering that would be availble for a fee. The reason for this thinking is that the site is funded by advertising only, and there is not advertising on the PDA Skin. I'm not saying for sure that this will happen, just wanted to make you aware in case it happens doen the road.

Please report any problem in this thread, and I will try to keep a list of known problems in this first post.

Known Issues:

I just checked in to see if it was up yet and low-and-behold there's your post!

Logged in and like it very much so far. Will report more as I see it.

Thanks!

You might want to post something about it here: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65067&page=7 to generate a bunch of e-mail notifications. I went to do it, but it's closed.

So far the PDA site seems to work quite well. Would be great to have the post date inside the threads - maybe in the blue header next to the poster's name.

The only other thing I've noticed so far is just a personal visual preference. I find there is not enough differentiation between the threads on the New Post search results. Maybe a little more white space, or a little indent on the last line of the thread description - the one with the last post date.

Mike (convergent) asked me to to help with the beta test of the PPC version of the PDAPhone home site.

I've been using the "PDA Style Beta" since Mike first directed me to it last Friday.

I'm finding that it works really well -- without any problems.

Although I will say that it was kinda hard figuring our how to log out/in so that I could "re-cookie" my Samsung i730 so that it is permanently set to use the PDA Style template. The old PDAPhomeHome mobile beta was pretty straight forward and obvious when it came to logging out or in. The new one is rather obtuse.

Once I figured that out, though, its been smooth sailing and a joy to use, especially in landscape screen orientation using full screen mode (I use PIE+)

It's clean, clear and a joy to work with.

One minor bug. When you select the "first new post" icon, it will jump to the correct page in the thread, but stays at the top of the page, rather then jupming to the post. I can live with that, but I do wind up reading the same messages several times sometimes.

There is only one forum I visit that actually takes me to the first new post--pocketMax. All the others take me to the top of the correct page, but not the post. I too can live that if necessary but it would be easier to deal with once the post dates are added.

Also would be good to have a "Quote" option for replying to a specific post.

dont select large view or something like that becuse it will change your cookie and you wont get back to the (PDA version style=10) thing unless you type in the URL by hand agian.

Need an option to display the picture attachments please - thumbnail size would be fine, as long as the reader can see what's being talked about.

it's much more efficient when loading pages, obviously, and that's much needed...but without the ability to jump to the first unread post or even differentiate between unread and read posts, i still find myself using www.logmein.com to access my PC in order to view pdaphonehome.com -

good first step though -

thanks for offering it.

hey everyones posts here are on target w/ my results and one other nagging thing:

when there is a file attatched to the post there is no way to see or click on it to download it - this makes me click on the link for the 'widescreen mode' which I hate on my pda makes everything take soooo loooong toooo loooaaad. then I have to find this entry in the forums and finaly click the link to get the pda version back - this time I'm going to add the linked page as a shortcut!

I would much rather see some minimal file size advertising than move to a pay model - my .02

I'm not sure I was envisioning people trying to download to their PDAPhone. My thought was that most people use the mobile version just to stay caught up if they are out of the office... but still use their desktop as their main entry point.

2 things...

1) the last couple of days the site is not keeping the setting. I start at the page linked at the top of this thread, log in, and it stays in pda mode for a few pages, switches to fullscreen mode shortly. While it could be something on my xv6700 not keeping the cookie, I don't think it is. I think the site is either restetting the cookie, or ignoring the cookie. (edit: fixed by deleting cookies in pie - and relogging in with allow cookies) Annoying because...

2) I am backwards from your thinking. I access the site aprox 90% from my device. My computer is in the master bedroom, and by the time I get to relax and see what's going on on the site, my wife is in bed...

Besides, that would defeat the purpose of being converged now wouldn't it...

my $.02

OK here's one thing that keeps bugging me.

When browsing on my xv6700 in pda friendly mode, and there is something I want to see on a particular page - like I want to see a screenshot, or download a file in a particular post...

I go to the bottom of the page and hit Fullscreen*Version
-when I do this I wish it would give me a Fullscreen*Version of the *current* page - not take me to the forums index and make me navigate through to the page I was originally on.

Fullscreen*Version can take me 4-5 minutes to get back to a specific post, because the pages take sooo loooong toooo looooad due to the formatting, scripting, and overall size.

Thanks for a great site...
