Sprint unlocking phones/allowing other phones

Hey.. I read Here:
Sprint to unlock its phones | Crave : The gadget blog

Sprint is going to start allowing non-sprint phones on their network. I remember the whole i550 issue from a long time ago. Does that change anything for the i550 (from Mexico)?

I was about to post the same story, but from endaget: Sprint Nextel agrees to start unlocking phones - Engadget, which links back to Sprint Nextel agrees to unlock phones - Yahoo! News

Of interest is this:
Quote:
The company also will ... instruct its customer service representatives on how to connect a non-Sprint phone to the Sprint network.

That's not how I read the story

What the article says is that Sprint must give departing (former) customers access to their Sprint-brand phones, to use on another CDMA network - and then only if the other network agrees to activate the Sprint hardware.

I didn't see anything in the article that says Sprint intends to activate non-Sprint CDMA phones on their own network. If any of you see that, please direct me to the actual wording.

It's quoted almost verbatim in the second post. In the article, its the last sentence in the third to last paragraph (the second to last paragraph is only a sentence). it's really not given much importance by whoever wrote the article, but its very significant to us.
