Please Sign This Petition for Sprint to Release the SPH-i550
A petition has been started to ask Sprint PCS to release the long-awaited Samsung SPH-i550 Palm OS phone, or failing that to at least continue to offer new compact clamshell Palm phones and keep the SPH-i500 for sale until a suitable replacement is available. If you are a SPH-i500 owner or a fan of small clamshell Palm phones you need to sign this petition. You can’t complain you’re not being offered what you want if you don’t make your wants known! Thanks, and thanks for the idea. Also thanks to everyone here for helping. I hope we can stir up enough interest, last I checked we had 21 signatures.
I've posted items on sprintusers, howardforums, and the-gadgeteer and sent requests to engadget and palminfocenter to post an item about it. The more we publicise it the better chance we have of succeeding.
Off topic - I'm a happy camper right now. Just got PSPs for my son and I and we're leaving on vacation tomorrow. The display on the PSP absolutely blows me away!
In the interest of promoting this petition a website was created. Below is a short abstract of the website that can be emailed to various internet news sources, blogs, etc. I've sent it to a few places. If you have some time and are so inspired, please send the blurb below to you favorite gadget weblog also.
The Samsung SCH-i539 Palm OS phone was just released in China while the US version of this phone, the SPH-i550, was cancelled by Sprint just a few weeks earlier. The i539 has a high-res 320x352 internal screen and an external OLED display. The camera takes 1MP stills and can record video. A built-in MP3 player is controlled by external buttons without having to open the phone. More specifications and pretty pictures can be found here. Also on that page is a link to a petition to have the US version of the phone, the SPH-i550, released, along with an "article" describing what statement the petition is trying to make and why, given that it takes only a few keystrokes and a mouse click, it may be worthwhile for you to sign it.

First of all let me say I LOVE CLAMSHELL PHONES! And I too would have been the first in line for the i550 had it been released (I did not get the i500 because it was non OS5, no SD cards, etc).
Now...
I remember the Sprint / Sony Ericsson T608, the first US CDMA phone with Bluetooth, was petitioned to be released in 2003. Well, they released it late 2003. It was very buggy, the battery life varied but was for the most part a few hours...never more than a day.
Worst parts:
- Sprint would not honor the rebates (they removed the form from the website and you have to yell to CS then they would give you some rebate)
- There was NO support whatsoever. Both Sprint and SonyEricsson rejected responsibility for the limited release phone.
So I will never ask for a phone to be released that the manufacturer does not want to release.
I hope the petition makes them want to release it and support it, not just dump them out there for a few that like exotic things.
Excellent points. Since the phone (effectively) has been released in China (though different), and it seems there may be a Mexico release of the actual i550 (see other topic), it's hard to imagine that this is a 'dead' phone within Samsung.
