i550 as a modem for a laptop ?

Any hints as to whether the i550 will retain the i500's ability to be used as a modem via its USB port ?

What is worrisome is that I read that Sprint's i600 (unlike Verizon's) CANNOT be used as a modem onto Vision because Sprint had Samsung remove this feature.

There is NO WAY I would "upgrade" to the i550 if it meant giving up my ability to use my phone as a casual Internet connection.

So, any info about this issue ? Or any certainly about the rumor that Sprint might "add back in" the modem feature that they stripped out of the Treo 650 ? Why aren't the Sprint i600 users complaining more about this ?

i550 modem

Well suited Monkey boy..
You can count on the same capabilities (with a slight performance increase) for modem use in the i550.

The i600 is a Pocket PC based device. This OS requires additional drivers (installed on the PC) for wireless modem use via USB.. The i550 will run off a similar platform as the i500 - probably palm OS 5.x - and the modem functionalities are built in. Sprint just might go the extra mile and force samsung to remove the USB driver from the disk, i seriously doubt that..if they did "the guys" could implement something. Buck up.

They have a hack that allows the DUN profile on the Treo 650.

there is no doubt that it will work as a modem, in fact i have my i550 syncing to my notebook using the i500's drivers, and the i500's cradle!
unfortunately it has not been able to be provisioned correctly, so i cant be 100% sure...

the problem with the i600 is not a driver for the computer. that can be had from verizon who uses the phone and does allow it to be used as a modem.

the problem is that sprint seems to have had samsung remove the settings to change the phone to modem mode. its a problem on the phone, not a driver issue. i have yet to hear of a workaround or solution.

darn! i was hoping you would have better luck with it. if you figure out how to get vision working on it let me know. i heard today that there might be a possibility that another one might have leaked out and could possibly become available.

peace all.

It seems this phone will not come with bluetooth, but may be able to be put in via SD/IO. I really want to be able to use this phone as a modem for my IPAQ 4350 and my powerbook G4 (both have bluetooth). So, if this phone doesn't have bluetooth, I'm going to have to use the phone's data cable to connect to my IPAQ and laptop to get online? It seems like it may be a hassle.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm not too familiar with the mechanics of the phone as a modem.

Sorry, BT via an SD card won't work for a modem. The resident expert confirmed the SD card slot only works for the 'palm' side of the device, not the phone side.. so, a BT card won't do you much good for this situation..

also, this phone has been pretty much cancelled, most of us have moved on to waiting for other vapor ware

a bletooth sdi/o solution should work as far as data is concerned, as long as scott is still around to write the drivers, when and if the phone is released...

From what I saw on a download from Samsung, there is a windows driver available to use the phone as a modem, at least that's what I remember. The file is still available. Maybe if a huge number of people download it, they'll start to reconsider. If you search on i550 on Samsung's site, you'll get this file.

Also, I talked with a Sprint consumer marketing rep who use to sell phones, and he talked with his Samsung rep. Officially, Sprint has cancelled the i550, but Samsung is in talks with Sprint to bring it back. Also, phone manufacturers will not sell phones unless they have a carrier to back them. I think this is because they do not have the support staff to handle the "consumer" calls for problems, they leave that to the carriers.
