Socket Error on i500 Texting to Cingular
I have the Samsung SPH-i500 Palm SmartPhone (S/W v. XG23) with SMS Text Messager (v. 2.1.0) downloaded from i500 Headquarters. My carrier is evil Sprint PCS.
I can successfully send text messages to Verizon phones, but I get an error when attempting to send a text to a Cingular phone.
Error:
Could not open connection to SMS provider server. NetLibSocketConnect failed (4626, netErrTimeout)
Any suggestions out there for getting around this problem?
- Dem
P.S. By the way, just two days ago text messages I receive started showing up with the " From:" actually identifying the sender instead of just annoyingly displaying " Unknown". That only took evil Sprint four years to fix!

That version of TM is old and has a number of problems. Look at least this post, if not the entire thread, to understand the current state of TM on the i500:

BTW, I noticed that Sprint "fixed" the Unknown sender problem also... temporarily... it doesn't work for me again...
(PS: this evening teleflip.com's MX (SMTP) server went down, so the Auto! doesn't work. Hopefully this is temporary...)
(Update: teleflip.com's server came up again a few hours later... hope it stays that way...)

It's unfortunate that the version to download on what appears to be the official web site is not the current version. Anyway, I downloaded the modified version you suggested, which appears to be v21h.
However, now I'm encountering a different problem.
I get the error:
Could not open connection to SMS provider server. Hostname Lookup Failed.

P.S. I don't mean to be picky, but I noticed that you referred to the company "Sprint". It's better to refer to the company by its more proper name, "Evil Sprint".

Still Evil Sprint lets us use the only flip Palm smartphone with very reasonable data plans. Evil is as evil does. Try Verizon for real Evil.

You are right. Cingular apparently also changed their MX server recently. So I patched v21h of tm-smtp.prc to correct this problem (version available for d/l), BUT, apparently they also instituted another change, which prevents even this version from working. They are probably blocking non-FQDN hosts from SMTP. I will look into it further and update y'all when I know more.
So, tm-smtp.prc (v21h or v21i) still does not work for Cingular. You can either use the Auto! function to send to Cingular, or use tm-imap.prc, which doesn't have these problems. I would recommend using tm-imap.prc (which is version v21e now).
So in this case, it is the evil Cingular (or evil AT&T, whom I'm sure will be making even more changes as it they flex their evil muscles)...

Ok, update: It does seem that Cingular is now blocking SMTP submissions from dynamic hosts -- at least my i500 can no longer submit SMTP directly to Cingular as before. This is undoubtedly a spam-reducing measure, but it sucks for the i500.
So I patched in a quick fix into tm-smtp.prc, not ideal, but it will have to do for now. It is version v21j and is available at the same URL. However, overall I think I would recommend using tm-imap.prc instead.

I tried the tm-imap.prc (v21e) file but still got the "Could not open..." error. So then I tried tm-smtp.prc (v21j), and it produced the same result. I verified both versions via the little "i" button and made sure the "Callback #" field listed my phone number. I also tried using the "Auto!" setting with v21j.
I'm more than willing to keep trying different files and options to get this stuff to work. And, of course, a big thanks for your effort in helping all of us get the most out of our i500 phones.

Correction: I just realized that the error message is not exactly the same as the old one.
The new error message when running v21j is:
Could not open connection to SMS provider server. SocketOpen failed.

That is very unusual. It sounds like network configuration issues. Please let me know:
1) Do your other Internet apps work ? nweb ? Eudora for email ?
2) Where are you located ?
3) Did you try power cycling your phone's radio to get a "fresh start" ?
4) Please connect to the Internet via Vision on your i500 (either by TM, nweb, Eudora, or most simply, by running the Preferences app, choose Network, then Connect. Now go to (or stay with) the Preferences app, choose Network. Open the dropdown menus, then Options/View Log (or simply Stroke V). Scroll down the log until you see:
Service name: Sprint PCS
Report back the local IP address, Gateway and DNS server addresses.
Thanks.
