nweb proxy dosn't seem to be working

I've tried several times today to use Nweb to go to the BBC news,
every attempt it times out. The other browsers seem to work.
Is anyone else having the same trouble.

doesn't work for me either. its either down or they changed the host id for the proxy OR the much rumored demise of Nweb for the i500 is finally here.

I noticed it starting last night (3/. What's wierd, is SOME sites still worked, such as our municipality home page (icgov.org), but other (more major) sites, such as mobile.palmone.com/us/ did not.

This evening, 6pm CST, it's worse. It sits there for a while "requesting", but then is coming up with a Communications error.

I wonder if there's any way to find out authoritatively what's going on?

(last thing - my old EudoraWeb seems to still work, such as it is).

- This could be the last nail in the coffin....

It might be; what message did you get when you tried to get to a major site?

Here's the error:
"Communications error. Please check coverage, check that the host address in Preferences is correct, and try again."

I checked in preferences - the browser points to a Host Address of sprintpcs.proxy.novarra.com. I tried to ping to that address (which resolves to 64.27.165.27), and it does not respond.

So whether through failure or on purpose, the proxy server does indeed appear to be down.

Argh!

Its still not working this morning... I dunno if it is on purpose or not-- might be good to ask them (Novarra), although, as we've discussed, it *was* supposed to shutdown in Dec 2006.

Happily it seems, for now, one can use the Webpro proxy. Just stick in webpro.palm.com in nweb's proxy field. It seems to work for me, although I don't use nweb much.

My guess is that there are other proxies that Novarra maintains, if we can only find them (poke around on the cell phones of other friends ). If both nweb and Webpro die due to lack of proxies, there is always Xiino, which is the browser that I use the most anyways.

To further support my contention, these are the IP addresses in question:

sprintpcs.proxy.novarra.com 64.27.165.27
webpro.Palm.com 64.27.165.15

Clearly the same entity, which we confirm by finding its WHOIS record:

64.27.165.27 Record Type: IP Address
Savvis SAVVIS (NET-64-27-160-0-1)
64.27.160.0 - 64.27.175.255
Novarra, Inc SAVV-S249287-2 (NET-64-27-165-0-1)
64.27.165.0 - 64.27.165.127

So Novarra owns the whole 0-127 block of addresses. Although it is possible that Novarra gave the webpro.Palm.com address to Palm to use, it is more likely that Novarra is still hosting both (and other) proxies for its browsers (both nweb and Webpro are its software products), and that Palm.com is simply pointing to it via its DNS records.

Chances are that Novarra also has other proxies running within that address space -- it may take some poking around. In any case, I think it would be wise to try to "fly under the radar" and not tell Novarra that we know that we can use the webpro.Palm.com proxy for nweb. We'll see how long that lasts...

Thanks monkeyboy!

I switched the proxy to webpro.palm.com - and it works like a champ! And I agree, no point bringing it up!

Let's see how this lasts....I still don't want a huge Treo!

I assume you change the proxy in Options>Preferences>Host address???

I did to webpro.palm.com and only some site will come up; cannot get any yahoo wap sites, esp. my wap yahoo mail.

Any suggestions MB?

Many thanks,

Every site I've tried on nweb works fine, including Yahoo!Mail. You should try again (hittting reload/refresh) to make sure it is not a caching issue, or just clear your cache first.
