Its more then just having their number and network protocol, doesn't the user have to be subscribed to their carrier's service? for instance without vision or ww i cannot sms a sprint user.

with pdaapps sms can you sms another carrier without entering in the @carrier info does it automatically know the carrier and do it for you?

thanks,
Jason

IIRC, you only need the phone # for the pdaapps' client. or you can use their email addy...

you dont have to neccessaroily subscribe to vision to send sms.. you can use it but will be charged..

if you know someone on sprint, just send them a sms at #.messaging.sprintpcs.com or verizon or whom ever..

if you want you and i to play with it just send me a PM and we can play...

well ive only had pda phones on sprint and ever since they had sms working on sprint i could send a message to anyone with sprint service. some folks i sent them to did not understand sms.

i know you can buy some extra sms's (for lack of a better term...its early for me..)
but everyone on sprint gets atleast 50/month i believe.

i think sprint is different than other carriers in that you can send an sms to anyone (albeit one way sms) on sprint regardless of if they are subscribed to an sms bucket...

Your account must be provisioned for text messaging before you can receive 1 way text messaging or 2 way SMS notifications. You don't necassarily need to subscribe to wireless web or Vision, but you must login to the SPCS manage portion of the website, click on text messaging, and follow the prompts to setup a username and password. My friend has not done this and I can send him messages till I'm blue in the face (1 way or 2 way) and he will never receive a notification. Another friend of mine does not pay for Vision but has a vision handset. He didn't receive notifications either until I walked him through the process I mentioned above.

My friend with a vision phone (but no Vision plan), who has signed up for text messaging, is receiving unlimited notifications and 1 way text messages. He only incurrs charges when he receives a 2 way notification and then uses his handset to log into Vision to read it (per Kb usage).

For my other friend with a non vision phone who signed up for text messaging through the site, he is getting 60 1 way messages per month at n/c.

vision phones vs. 2.5G WW phones will differ in this regard as noted by the previous poster...

if anyone had a 2.5G phone, they can get sms as long as their phone can receive sms's. they do get so many sms's free then you have to pay for more.

for vision phones it is different as you have to be provisioned on the network (have your username/pswd in the system). i usually send sms's (when i rarely do) to people on non vision phones which is how i know they don't have to have a sms-specific plan in place.

ok most people are on non-vision phones. So go into the account and sign up for it under the options just like i'd log in to change my preferences? Will it tell me that i only get 60 a month or something?

i assume i can then just use i500sms to send them a text or number@messaging.sprintpcs.com, it'll pop right up on their phone but they can't reply?

correct?

thanks guys. Wish i would've known this for the past two years when i had my a460,i could've signed up to receieve scores and news updates, and text messages from friends who do have the service.

Yes to all 3 quesitons. Only thing I would add is that you can also send an SMS message to their phone # too, after they sign up. Since they have a 2G phone, they will need to login to the wireless web and will then incur airtime/ww usage fees. One reason I know this is because I had a retention plan with Sprint prior to my Vision plan. Whenever I tried to add WW, they told me my plan was not eligable for a WW plan add on. I still received 1 way text messages & SMS notifications but I incurred charges when I signed on to the WW web to read the SMS message (at .39 per minute).

For PDA Apps:

If you use the phone number option then it will be sent to them as an SMS.

If you use the email option it will arrive as a 1 way text message.
