go into your palm preferences and choose buttons. you'll have a drop down menu next to the globe like button. tap and choose nweb. you're all set.

Getting Novarra browser replacement for Blazer to work

Thought I would share my experience on the recent Blazer-Novarra browser changeover since I have gotten good information from this forum before.

When I first got that warning message around Sep 21st telling me that Blazer would not work anymore after Sep 22nd, I dutifully went and downloaded the Novarra NWeb browser onto my i500.

However, I could never get it to work so I was pleasantly surprised to find my Blazer browser still working after Sep 22nd. Not wanting to fix something that wasn't broken, I continued to use the Blazer browser for another month until I got another warning message last week reminding me that Blazer was supposed to stop working back on Sep 22nd. And this time, it really did stop working.

So, with no working browser, I resorted to calling Sprint and waited about 25 minutes on the phone for a Level 2 Tech who solved my problem in 4 minutes.

Apparently, even though I had loaded Novarra onto my i500 back in late September, there was some sort of Sprint system glitch that prevented the Novarra browser from auto-provisioning which it should have done. The Sprint Tech then walked me through a simple manual provisioning which got me up and running on Novarra in no time (note that the phone has to be turned off and on in the process so you can't be on your i500 talking to a Sprint Tech when you do this procedure).

Here's the procedure in a nutshell:
1) Tap on the Application Launcher
2) Then tap on the drop-down list at the upper right of the screen and select "System"
3) Then tap the "Preferences" icon (this assumes this was in your "System" folder)
4) Tap the drop-down list at the upper right and select "Phone Prefs"
5) Select the "Internet Settings" bar
6) Then select "Update Profile"
7) It will show an "IOTA Configuration" screen; tap "OK"
Then the phone will undergo an "Updating Vision Profile" provisioning process for 2-3 minutes
9) Tap on "Reset" to power the phone back on, and then try the browser

Good luck!

A couple of other thoughts about the new Novarra browser...

I used to dislike the fact that since Blazer was a WAP browser that I couldn't go to some websites. However, after the first few minutes with Novarra's NWeb browser, I didn't think that was such a shortcoming when I tried to load the "regular" website versions of Ameritrade and Hotmail.

The resultant websites took so long to load and then were terrible to navigate with all the graphics and tons of unnecessary text that was crammed on to the i500 screen making it essentially useless.

Luckily when I was on the phone with the Sprint Level 2 Tech who walked me through the manual provisioning procedure that got my Novarra browser working in the first place, he also found the old text-based website URL for Ameritrade that I used to use with Blazer (https://www.amtdw.com).

For Hotmail, someone else has posted this on another forum topic:
www.mobile.msn.com/hm/folder.ASPX for MSN in general and you can later save the Hotmail-specific URL once you tap on the Hotmail link there

With Novarra, it's kind of like having the best of both worlds -- still access to the faster-to-use WAP type sites, along with "regular" internet website access when you want it.

Does anyone know of a central place to find the WAP-type URLs for popular websites or do you have to go to each website to find their mobile-browser oriented versions? Thanks.

Blazer wasn't actually a WAP browser, it had it's own server that reformatted web pages to fit a small screen. (That's what was shut down recently.) You can find a list of websites formatted for PDAs here: http://www.pdaportal.com/

Yeah, reidme, I guess I'm really not that techie to have known that. Thanks though for the link to the PDA browser link listing -- that will save me a lot of time from having to hunt some good ones down.

Now, do you know an easy way to download desired ones directly into the Novarra Bookmarks list or do I have to do it the old-fashioned way and Graffiti them in?.... TIA.

Just use nWeb (or whatever browser you use) on your i500 to go to pdaportal and set it as a bookmark, then jump to any sites you like via pdaportal and bookmark them too. The only URL you have to grafitti in is www.pdaportal.com.

What does all this mean?

it means enjoy your crappy new browser for one year then be forced into a new phone because yours will then be useless.

Duh, I should have thought of that -- elegant and simple. Thanks for the (should-be-obvious) tip, reidme!
