Hi,
I have also posted this over at http://mobile-files.com/forum/showth...4622#post94622
I am trying to update the firmware on my i500, but am having a problem.
I have the XG23 firmware and Unipst program.
I am successful using my desktop cradle and USB cable with the Unipst software to read data from my phone.
I am able to read the information off the phone in "Service mode" and have saved it as a backup.
My problem is that when I go into "Download mode" and try to "Open bin", it gives me a message that says "not supported".
I assume thats how I should be updating the firmware.
Please tell me I'm doing something stupid
Regards,
Karl

Hi Jason,
1 - Plug your phone in with or without Hotsync manager running - I've tried it both ways and it is able to read the info.
2 - Start Unipst
3 - Select your model, i500, and press the RUN button
4 - Select the SERVICE mode tab "near" the top.
5 - select from the top bar SERVICE and then press READ FROM PHONE 'or' on the icon bar the 7th icon from the left (phone & computer). Note: Don't press the 8th icon (similar) because thats WRITE TO PHONE.
6 - A Pop-up will want you to select what info to read - I selected NAM + FEATURE and press OK
7 - The white Comm status area will say "Reading from Handset.....NAM & PDA items". In about 15sec the phone goes offline and after 25sec the Comm status say's "Completed!!!"
8 - You should then see phone information in the "General Information" area.
I will say that you may have to tell the software which comm port to use which can be done under SETUP - mine happens to be com3.
Regards,
Karl

Thanks, Karl. I must have been having a COM port issue because it wasn't connecting to the phone. THought you had to place the phone in some kind of communication mode. I'll try again on different com ports.
(Anyone know how to determine the com port your phone is connceted to on Win XP Pro?)

After following Karl's instructions, I get an error: Month Data Error!. I click ok and the display in unipst reads: Password is invalid! Any idea what this means?
Thanks-
Jason

I experienced the same problem but changing to the correct port rectified that problem.
I get the completed message and the data fields filled and the phone restarts.
I changed from H>D but can't seem to do anything else.
Clicking the open BIN button (and everything else) gives me a "Not Supported" message

Okay, I tried the tool. I get the following message when the COM port is set to anything but COM2:
Error in Opening USB port 9600BPS!
When I use COM2, I get the following for any of the four Read from Phone options:
>Error in changing USB DM!
Perhaps it is telling my USB hardware to do something that it doesn't support? I'll probably try using a friend's computer...
I see that others have gotten farther reading the phone info, but has anybody upgraded the firmware?

I still haven't been able to upgrade the firmware with this software, however, I bought some software and am waiting for it to arrive. Should be here in a few days.
If it works, then I'll post it for my fellow i500 users.
Damn it would be nice if this works and we can move on to more important things in life!
Regards,
Karl

Well I finally broke down and went to Sprint to get my Firmware updated to XG23. I wanted to do it myself but couldn't get any Unipst software to let me download to the phone. I even bought some on ebay that was "supposed" to work, but it didn't. Maybe some versions of the "phone cradle" are different.
Anyway, I followed someones advice from the forum that recommended going to the Reston, VA store. They were not going to charge me for it according to the service ticket they gave me, however the "tech" wasn't able to upgrade it because of a cable problem. He referred me to the Tysons Corner (Vienna, Va) store.
I went there and they were able to upgrade the phone, but charged me $35 to do it.
So, Sprint makes some more money!
Regards,
Karl
