Thanks guys. I'm glad that I wasn't mistaken. The upgrade is worth it.

In another word, maybe.
The only reason to upgrade from WK19 o XG23 is if you are annoyed by the frequent network hangs.
(and you can figure out what annoys you more: the frequent network hangs with the WK19 firmware, or the frequent misinformation and runarounds of trying to get Sprint to upgrade your firmware).

about the 'upgrade fried my phone'
Realize that when they are done flashing the firmware, they need to manually reset the phone. Without that, it will otherwise appear dead, aka 'fried'. I suspect almost all of the cases of 'update fried my phone' are merely instances of not resetting the phone after the flash update is complete.
If they give you a replacement, then walk away and be happy (think "new slim battery!"). But, don't let them charge you, and don't let them give you nonsense about 'non-Sprint' software voiding a warranty.

... And don't leave the store without first making sure they actually did the update (it is pretty annoying to wait 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours for the phone to get updated, leave the store and THEN discover the update didn't happen.

Yea... I'm having mixed reviews about this upgrade. It could the phone, but I'm having a ton of fatal exception errors where i have to soft reset the phone. This occurs a lot with i500sms and verichat :/

The firmware itself shouldn't have mixed reviews. XG23 is _good_. The mixed reviews come from Sprint being able to update your phone.
The fatal exceptions: be careful about what version of i500sms and verichat you have (some versions of verichat caused me trouble), as well as be very aware about other software and/or Palm hacks you might have installed.

Ah. Thanks for the advice. I'll try upgrading. I don't have any hacks installed yet. I'm too paranoid about "voiding the warranty" on this phone to risk any of that. -- Only "sprint approved" apps for me. xD

Palm 'hacks' are soft patches in a function jump table. They will not void your warranty. In fact, Samsung shipped one with their external keyboard.

I didn't use quotes to relay the intended sarcasm in my comment. That goes without saying, I haven't installed any hacks yet xD. Sorry
