I echo ... thanks for your hard work ... being new to this whole thing I'm not sure what an appropriate donation is ... but rest assured I sent ya one ..
Your my hero .. LOL .. after the 6035 and I300 I'm really disappointed with the alarms on the I330 .. being still in my 14 day period .. I considered sending it back .. knowing your on the trail gives me a warm fuzzy about the alarm problem .. I know many people out there are attacking this issue with ferver and I'm sure I speak for many of the code deficient of us out here when I say THANKS for all your efforts .. just felt that neede to be said
Originally posted by a_c_s Scott, have a question on the phone skin...I was able to successfully (and privately) upload a few test skins I was trying out, and finally worked out the version I wanted...to my dismay, when I tried to upload the third time, it told me the image size was wrong and to use a 160*65 template...I was using your "clean" template as my base and just writing over that all along, so not sure what the problem is?
I got so frustrated I started from scratch and still get the same result...I am no longer able to upload to the site...sorry to be a pest, but is there somewhere I can email you this jpeg to look over...hopefully you can figure out what the issue is rather quickly...thanks again for the great work... -A
Umm, not to be silly, but are you sure you were using the phone upload form and not the graffiti upload form? The 160x65 message only comes up in the graffiti upload program. I just uploaded a test of the 'clean' skin as 'test' and it seems fine. Let me know.
Originally posted by Hover I've got 2 suggestions for the site.
1. Please sort the skins in each category by date uploaded. (newest at the top) This way we can easily go through and see what new skins we don't have. I currently just go to the 'search' area and search for all new skins but this leads to private skins coming up too...which leads to my 2nd suggestion....
2. There really should be some sort of ultra-private function where the skin is not stored on the site at all. If I was to create a skin of a family member or close friend, there's no way in hell I would want *any* possibility of other internet users having access to it. Right now the "private" option is sort of a joke as everybody has access to them.
Please don't take any of this as criticism, I am just making suggestions to make this an even better system. Thanks again for all the hard work.
Hmm.. I think the 'browse' should be left the way it is -- but I might need/want to add a couple new pages -- something like 'newest skins' and 'most downloaded skins'.
The 'private' option was a bit of a quicky, and keeps most users away from them. Those who know SQL and wildcards can use them in the search and get them. I don't want to resort to usernames, but I didn't realize anyone would be so concerned about others seeing 'anonymous' family members.
Perhaps the best way to do it is nuke all the private skins up there right now (sorry anyone with them already there) and create some kind of 'personal gallery' having uploaders create user accounts, and then have access to all of their own skins. Kind of a 'forced author' option. I'm not sure how to manage passwords, however, since people always seem to foget them, and I'm really wanting to avoid collecting email addresses, or making people register... always seems to push people away.
Of course another option is having private skins only searchable by FULL name, not "wildcardable".
What do you think? After all, I put this site up for others, I already had skins on my phone

PS - Criticism of my older projects is what has made my newer projects so much better, so don't feel bad about throwing out suggestions, and the way you'd like to see it. Worst case I just ignore you
Okay -- I did a little work tonight. I added some cool features from the browse page that should fix some of those issues...
MOST IMPORTANTLY, however, I changed the way private skins work for those of you concerned. You can no longer search for private skins with the regular search and, of course, they do not show up in any of the browse functions. Now, the only way to get to a private skin is to type in the exact name -- capital letters and all, or the exact author name.
Scott, thanks for the reply...I was definitely using the phone upload, not the graffitti...probably a typo on my part when I quoted the error...I stayed up till 2AM and finally traced the problem to a change in the compression algorithm...I went back to my original settings and voila everything worked...all the improvements on the site look great...keep up the good work...
for the rest of you tech gurus out there, since Scott is dedicating much needed attention to the alarm and ringer issues, has anybody else thought about taking a stab at porting Jake's full screen blazer hack to the I330?? I fear I am doing permanent damage to my eyes trying to read Avant Go on the tiny screen...
thanks, A

Jake and I were talking yesterday about the Blazer hack. Don't worry... you'll see something from the both of us soon!
Don't store it on the server at all. For a private skin, when someone uploads one, you do one (or both) of these:
Ask for an email and send it to them directly.
-or-
Put it in a temp directory on your server, give them a download link right there. If they don't download it right then, they'll have to upload it again, but that shouldn't be a big deal.
Two possible solutions that don't require you to implement usernames at all.
I agree - private skins could disappear immediately
I think that last idea is exactly the right one. Speaking for myself, any time I upload a private skin, I would be downloading it immediately (I mean we are obviously all a bunch of immediate gratification junkies around here, aren't we
When the confirmation screen comes up and offers me the download, that is the only time I'd ever need to see it online. If you want to delete it 2 minutes later, I think that would be perfect. If I lose it and want it again, I just upload the picture again! If I think I want to get it online later, then I'd make it public . . .

In terms of squinting, being middle aged I can empathize. One thing I prefer in avantgo as compared to blazer is that you can shift to a larger font. Big help. Also you can use the hard key / buttons on the samsung to go backwards or forwards. Xiino has big font too but it freezes alot if you have it set to download pictures.
I realize the first priority is to the more widely used blazer. But if you can get to it a full screen hack for avantgo would be greatly appreciated too.
I believe there may be a conflict between SkinSelector and TealEcho. After loading a new skin, my phone would freeze up - needed a soft reset. It didn't bother me too much until it froze in the "off" state and killed 1/2 of my battery in a couple hours.
Anyway, I disabled TealEcho a couple days ago. So far, so good.
What does teal echo do? Since the SkinSelector uses only the i330 skin API from samsung already on the phone, it would have the same problem if you selected 'custom skin' and used any skins included with the i330 on the CD-ROM from samsung as well. It would be worth letting Teal know about the problem, esp. if it is narrowed down a little.
I was just posting the info as an FYI. TealEcho replicates what you draw in the text/number area on the screen. I think the problem is that it tries to do it in phone mode also. Maybe I'll shoot them an email with the details.
I just realized that if I name a graffitti skin and a phone skin the same names ... only the last one will be available to me .. for example ... if I create a graffitti skin of the flag .. name it flag .. then a phone skin of the same flag .. name it flag .. only the phone skin named flag will be on the phone .. if I load the graffitti flag .. only the graffitti flag will be there ... I think when another file loaded with the same name .. albeit a different type of skin ... it simply overwrites it ... okay .. that's the problem
anyway to change the name of the skins once uploaded and named??? I tried renaming the .prc files .. it appears the skin selector doesn't use that name .. so .. short of recreating either the graffitti skins or the phone skins I can't seem to figure out how to get both flags on the phone for me to use ... I know I'm a pain .. but a lovable one .. LOL
Thanks for all your work .. you guys that help to make good products better are wonderful ...
P.S. Any luck using the phone ringers for Alarms???? Remember me .. the deef guy .. LOL
scott,
I uploaded a phone skin under the automotive category (03_toyota_matrix), but there seems to have been an error during the upload progress. the skin has lost some of its color, and part of the right side of the skin appears on the left.
can you remove this? I guarantee no one will want to download this one!!

I tried to upload again and everything seems ok.
Thanks for the great site...
Brian
It's gone Looked like it only got partially uploaded... JPGs do that when truncated.
Glad you like the site! It's been keeping pretty busy, there have been 803,278 hits on the site so far, and it's only been up 5 weeks now! Who knew the response would be so big?
I have created a couple of Skins and have downloaded those with out a problem. I am using aIE5.2 on a MAC and when I go to download other Skins that others have made all i download is a file called "download.siml".
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Leif

Hmm.. download.siml is the file that tracks user hits and redirects to the actual skin. Your browser *should* rename automatically to the skin name. If you just save the 'download.siml' file as 'skinname.pdb' you should be able to load it just fine.

Ok, i just did a skin right, and i realized, i should have changed it a bit, cause it looks different on the phone right - So, i want to upload a new one, but its really just minor changes - SOOO my question is, as it relates to skins - should we devlope them in "private' mode and then when they are kicking post them publicaly? or is there a way to erase them? or upload with the same name as to overright?
whats easier for you?

you can't overwrite an existing one currently with the same name...I have been tweaking privately then posting publicly when completely satisfied...too many people put up three versions of the same half-assed skins and it clutters the site...I agree with your suggestions though...being able to overwrite (assuming it is being done by the same author) should eventually be made a feature on the site...would definitely save Scott some bandwidth...
