Read the docs that came with skin selector-- most likely you missed this step:
Make sure your phone is set to use 'Custom Skins' by starting the phone app, choosing options, preferences, selecting 'display' from the menu on the top right, and then selecting 'Custom Skin' from the keypad dropdown.
You need to get the Palm-OS pallete, and use your graphics program to convert it to 8-bit color (256 color) using that pallete, and then it will look pretty good. A nice floyd-steinberg dither looks great on the i330. My website does a 'closest match' algorithm, which for certain things (ie. photos of people) turns out terrible results, but for things like cartoons/anime turns out awesome results.
Search on Google for the palm pallete, or download the first one I found on google:

I am still using the phone, but probably not for too much longer. Remember, my i500 is modified to have bluetooth, and a few other nice features keeping it a little more modern -- but it still lacks memory/speaker/EVDO/MP3/etc.
I am really wanting to move to a phone like the new Samsung i607 blackjack -- as soon as Sprint has it available. There is *rumor* that it may be released this November (or not).
I don't like the form factor of the Treo, and thus would never buy one. And frankly, Sprint's selection has sucked lately.
So for now, I am still an i500 user, but my days are numbered.
