USB to Serial Adapter Revisited

I know this has been addressed several times, but I am still unclear on two items:

1. Does there exist a serial to USB adapter from any manufacturer that will work with the cradle?

2. (Off topic) Does there exist a serial to USB adapter that will completely emulate a serial port and allow ANY type of serial device to be used? Examples: An old mouse, External modem, some older printers, and critically for me: Console access to network electronics like Cisco Routers.

Cliff, I actually own this adapter, and it doesn't work with the cradle, nor have I had success with other devices.

it does NOT work with the cradle - only the sync cable. haven't tried it with other hardware, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. i'm using w2k and it works flawlessy for my synch's. i think the prob with using it with the cradle lies in the cradle (surprise), not the serial-usb cable.

Wow, that's surprising. I tried a few cables with the cradle, and none worked...! glad to hear that you found one!

USB-SERIAL CONNECTOR

IM SURE THAT THE DRIVERS FROM PALM ARE THE KEY. I TRIED TO USE THE CABLE WITH THE MOTOROLA TIMEPORT DOCKING STATION AND IT DIDNT WORK. HOOKED IT BACK UP TO THE PALM AND IT WORKED WITHOUT A HITCH!!!

I used to have the same setup -- had to connect my I300 through a USB port. I bought one of those Belkin USB to serial (it also has two additional USB ports) and it worked fine.

The key for me was updating to the newer palm desktop. It is a free download from the palm site.

BTW, I'm not using the adaptor any longer if you'd like to buy it (got a new computer with a serial port)

Now, if you use the USB to Serial adapt, will you get a faster sync speed, or is it still just as slow as crappy serial. I really wish Samsung would release a USB cradle for this phone, my buddy was gounna buy one until he found out that the cradle is serial. We both used to have IIIc's and we hated syncing cuz of serials

I'm not sure about speed of the usb/ serial cable. But, if you're looking to get into this phone, and the only reason you can find is for synch speed, you need to look a little closer...

I have a laptop computer w/ only usb. But, I still bought the phone assuming that the serial-usb cable would work (talk about early adopters - no one else had posted usb-serial working before I did). When it didn't work with the cradle, I again took a leap of faith and bought the synch cable. Only at that point did I get the synch to work. Why's this significant? There are so many stinkin' reasons to get this phone that you should be able to work around most any little inconvenience/ annoyance...

I just can't imagine anyone synch'ing so much data that the synch speed would be a show-stopper for purchasing this phone...

the speed with a usb adapter will still be serial speed.. the charger (or data cable) is serial in nature, and even though the usb port can move along quite fast , the bottleneck is still in the serial part of the charger/ phone

so no you wont experiance any faster speeds...

NATER,

To answer your second question: Yes there is a USB to Serial cable. I bought mine from ebay for around $10 shipped, and it works great for Cisco console access, etc...
