Did Samsung intend to include T9 input from Tegic and then back it out...?
This would have helped with one handed dialing. Here is what I noticed:
The first page of Chapter 8 in the Acrobat version of the handbook (page 94) says :
Application Menus and Entering Text
In this Section
Menu Navigation
Shortcuts
Viewing the Menus
Entering Characters by Tapping the Keypad
Entering Characters Using T9 Text Input
Entering Symbols and Numbers
However, its not anywhere in the chapter
The end of the user guide says :
T9 Text Input is licensed by Tegic Communications and is
covered by U.S. Pat. 5,818,437, U.S. Pat. 5,953,541, U.S. Pat.
6,011,554 and other patents pending.
yeah i dont htink we need it either.. it would get tedious to tap the key x amount of times to get the leter you need... this is for non-palm powered phones IMO...
hell, not only do we have the popup, but we have the grwffiti...
i was just shocked they even were going to include it.. a waste of ROM and licensing fees...
my Simon phone has thie kind of "predict-a-key" feature also... works SOME of the time... <iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

I put a Palm App called "phonemate" on that does something simular to this i think. The "dial" part doesn't actually work, but you can hit edit when it gets your number and then dial from there easily.
I contacted MobiMate about it and pointed them to The Jake's dialing code. They told me they will try to put something together this week and send it to me for test.
PhoneMate is a very handy app. I think it's perfect for the I300 if it dials the number. I recommend to give it a try even now. You can make it dial if you go to "edit" after selecting the entry. It takes you to the regular phone app, and from there you can hit the (tiny) icon to dial. Not good for driving, but still usable. Check it out.
About the T9 dialing. It's posible Samsung got a Skeleton Sprint phone manual that had that section about the T9 and Samsung didn't clean it. It is obvious that Sprint requires a specific set of features in the phones they sell to make it easy for customers to learn to use a new phone when they replace the old one.
Originally posted by mjorange I've had phonemate running flawlessy on my I300.
Hey MJ, the "Dial" button tried to dial but nothing happens in PhoneMate. Does that happen to you too? I know someone posted that hitting "Edit" brings up the palm address dialing option, but I was just wondering if everything works for you including the dialing capability.
I've been trying TealPhone for a couple of days, and it's working nicely for me. I like the look of Phonemate better though.
Paul Taylor, the author of Address Plus, is working on patching a scroll function using the volume buttons and diial using the voice memo button. I've been beta testing Address Plus for him and it now works in all other respects, but I don't think he has officially released it yet. It's my favorite address book enhancement.

I haven't used phonemate for a month or so but feel confident in saying it worked for me. Perhaps it works with one version of the I300 and not the other. I don't know but am installing now and will let you know the results.

Wow. I was certain it worked for me. I just reinstalled a recent version and it did not function. My girlfriend has my old I300. Maybe I'll have her run a test.
I haven't tried Voice Command yet, I take your word on how good it is.
However, sometimes I don't want to speak out loud when I'm making a call, for example, if I'm among the audience in a presentation and need to check my voice mail, or just sitting in my cube at the office.
Regardless of dialing, PhoneMate lets you find an address record real fast, and sometimes I use it to look up smail mail addreses and other info.
Having said all that, I'll give VC a try for those occasions when it's the best option.
heh... well, if i was just sitting somewhere and not driving or whatever, i would just type the number in or look it up in the addy book.. no need for VC..
but VC comes in handy when im driving and the like...
