I have just bought a used i300. i'm thinking of ordering a data cable to go with it, but not sure if it needs software to go with it. I'm running on XP.

Depends on what you want to do.

use the data cable as a sync cable? run palm desktop and bob's your uncle

use as modem? get the upgraded dialer for your i300, and set up the networking device in xp

upload ringtones? you're screwed: the i300 doesn't have uploadable ringers.
