Think Digital Camera. And you're right, theres not a drastic change between the 330 and 300. Its 3G of course. Its double the memory which is quite a change. Digital Camera port. And lets not forget that Samsung has been watching this board since day one, so I'd imagine a lot of smaller changes that don't make it to the spec sheet have also been changed. Ultimately, I think we'd all agree that theres really not too much that they could change about the 300. Its a solid piece. I guess I would have liked a "clie" screen, but that would have raised the price substantially.
No doubt that the I300 is a great phone. Everyday someone comments about my phone. And when I meet a fellow owner, we giggle like schoolgirls about our phone. Every fellow owner loves their phone even if he/she has had scary incidents with hard reset while traveling. But the phone has its idiosyncrasies.
These points should be addressed for me to purchase the successor. If Samsung fulfill these needs, I'll buy the successor today or when available. My goodwill stems from the quality of the original I300 and its utility. Samsung has been climbing the respectable ranks of electronic providers. These ranks include Sony and Panasonic. Today, I always evaluate Samsung offering in other electronic offerings. Hopefully, Samsung divisions will continue to build credibility and provide consumer with better products at a value. Here’s my needs for the successor.
1. A Better Screen
People enjoy placing pictures on their high-resolution device. I300 users crave this ability. The Cleo and iPaq have marvelous LCD.
2. More Memory and expansion slot
Email and Web cache fill memory fast. Plus, I300 capabilities allow people to use more applications. I have numerous databases on my phone and they continue becoming larger.
An expansion slot would allow people to expand memory usage. Plus, backup and restore people contact information while traveling (very important).
3. Polymorphic Ringers with downloadable ringers
I love personalizing my phone. Thanks Jake!
The market has a huge number of phone and no matter how many ringers they have. Thay sound the same to me. Personal Ringer would alleviate this issue for me.
4. Upgradeable 3G for its rollout
Real-time email from one's POP server would be great. Plus, the phone should incorporate serious spam tools in order not to waste bandwidth.
5. Better Battery and portable charger
People use I300 more than their cell phone counterpart. Samsung should consider this point when designing battery life specs. I300 has suffice battery life for using just the phone or the palm; not both. Browsing the web or checking email drains the battery fast.
6. Security
The I300 carries sensitive data, so Samsung should beef up the standard security options for the phone and palm unit. Plus, allow developer the resources to write aftermarket products.
7. General Durability
I can only imagine if you drop the I300. The thought terrifies me. First, I300 has a large screen with no cover. Samsung should pad the side as well. It looks like I330 incorporate some enhancements, yet Samsung needs a face cover in addition to the billfold.
8. Keep the device price under $500
Samsung needs to remember that people easily lose phones. People do not want to lose a $1000 hybrid device. Five hundred dollar is even too much for the average consumer.
Hmm..maybe I should place this post in the feature request column. Well, I'll wait for responses to clarify my post.
This post would be appropriate in the request thread but I don't think it'd get as much attention. Very good post my friend. Stated very well. I think we'd all agree with pretty much all of your concerns/requests. I don't think the 330 will allow for downloadable ringers or have a substantially better screen. Hopefully, I'm wrong.
BTW, I have dropped my 300 and can say it took it pretty well. Its as sturdy as it feels.
-----------------
Regarding the price: I'd be willing to pay an extra $100 if it had an optimal screen.
Great post and great ideas. I really do hope that Samsung is reading this and taking the comments seriously!
From the information that I have about the i330 today says that the i330 will have a better screen than the i300. Rumors of TFT display, but this is not confirmed and I question the source. Good idea, bad rumor. Downloadable ringers has more to do with the browser interfacing more 1-to-1 than it does today with the i300. Today the Sprint PCS WAP browser is more of an added peice of software than a part of the OS. This is good and bad for obvious reasons. Actually, the only bad part I can think of relates directly to the fact that we can not download ringers. With the amount of movement in web pages, technology of pages, and vendor/carrier endoursement I do not think Samsung is going to make the effort to integrate a WAP browser with its OS of the i330. More likely is a SDK that will allow for custom ringer creation, similar to the 6035.
One more point, the upgradeable 3G request was not quite clear (at least to me). By upgradeable 3G, are you requesting upgradeable to the next versions of 3G technology (EV-DO and EV-DV), or something else about email?
I've actually dropped my I300 several times. Butter fingers or something. Came through fine each time although the battery always comes off. Last weekend was the worst. It fell out of truck face down onto rough asphalt and slid several feet under the truck (I was on a steep hill).
I expected to see the screen in a thousand pieces. It came through just fine. A few surface scratches on the face plate (it's grey underneath that silver face in case anybody was wondering) but the screen is untouched and it works just fine. More than I can say for other phones I've had.
Although the screen is not fantastic by any measure, I use AlbumToGo for my photos and mapquest maps and am relatively happy with the results. The type of screen protector you use has a big impact on the image quality and daylight readability.
Feature-wise for the 330, once they get the higher bandwidth, I'd settle for a speakerphone microphone that works and a better way to select it. (although the items you list would be veeerrrry nice
