It doesn't use plan minutes. It's free. You can specify in advance which channels you want with literally 1,000's to choose from. You don't have to wait for slooow page loads. It works in the subway (underground, where there's no signal...I take it too and from work).
I could go on and on and on. I love Avant Go and use it all the time.
you can store stuff in it and view it offlline.. thats the only real benefit IMO. ( i thought blazer could do this to some extent also)
the reason you can use avantgo in the "subway" is because when you are offline theres no need to connect to the web so lets not make folks think this app has some special power to be able to get thru the subway while other apps cant.. lets not sensationalize here... :p
i used avantgo on the 6035 and it was ok but it ended up wasting my memory and the sync times were so sloooooooowwwww.. its good for folks who need to view sports, news, etc.

That's what I suspected. I don't think there is a lot of value added unless you are trying to save minutes.

Well of course! Who was trying to sensationalize Avant Go. I love Blazer and I love Avant Go. The truth is that Avant Go is a lot better than opting to check news on Blazer. More specialized channels, updates everytime you sync on certain news channels, and once again, free.
avantgo aint nuthin' but a glorified WAP browser! depending on which "channels" you want synced, it could take years to hotsync (ok now I'm sensationalizing.. ;p). its a niche app no doubt...
See, your point would be credible if it truly did take SO LONG to sync. When performing a sync my AG onlytakes about 15-20 secs. Is that the long time you're referring to? And I am maxed out with channel space.... Marc you must be using a 56K modem.
I have both AvantGo and Blazer installed on my I300 .... and I'd say about 80% of the time, I use cached AvantGo content to get what I want. Movie times, weather, the latest news headlines, etc. etc. With applications like Pocket MapBlast, I can download color graphic maps wirelessly right on the spot!! Unless something is absoutely real-time (like a basketball game in progress), AvantGo is where I do most of my work.
Also, I would disagree strongly with the assertation that AvantGo is nothing more than a glorified WAP browser. WAP browsers can't download color maps from the Internet. There are several "custom" channels that I have created for myself in AvantGo (nightlife webpages, etc.) that are real HTML pages on the web. You know what? They display like real HTML pages on my I300 too! I always have the latest content from those sites available on my I300, with full web formatting and layout - including graphics (if I choose to download them).
Come to think of it, I haven't signed into the AvantGo portal for a while - I wonder if there's any new and exciting channels? Ta ta....
I used to use AvantGo regularly before I upgraded my Macinstosh to OSX. Unfortunately, there seems to be a serious issue between the new opertating system and AvantGo. Does anyone know of either a fix or an upgrade planned by Avantgo? Though I'm using the SprintWeb I'm about to complete my 3 month freebie and don't feel like paying extra for less utility than I used to get with AvantGo. Thanks.
AvantGo is a terrific offline browser. I've got Yahoo personalized, CNN, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Consumer Reports, The Onion, Daily Dose of Useless Knowledge and others at my fingertips. Best of all, I'm not burning up precious minutes at a blazing 14Kbs. If I'd use Blazer as much as I use AvantGo, I'd have to choose a plan that would rival the GNP of some small world countries. Kinda looks funny when you take your I300 into the restroom with you, to catch up on current events!!!
It's a great off-line line browser. You can specify depth and should you leave the site.
I run the scripts in off hours and the items are waiting in the Intall Tool when I sync.
I run news/weather daily before I leave for work, stuff like word of the month I only run every few weeks, tech info I run every few days, the calendar where I work I run at the end of the day.

You can also get specialized PQAs that give quick updates and thus serve a similar purpose as Avantgo. I used to use Avantgo, but the memory-hog nature of it and the 8MB limitation of the I300 simply meant it had to go for me. Although I really liked it, but now PQAs, web alerts from Yahoo, and Blazer do about the same thing.
Sounds crazy getting 3 apps to do the same thing that Avantgo used to do, huh?
